Must be 1080, do not necessarily need Internet or 3D

A 55 foot TV is pretty darned big.

Plasma or LCD? If you want LCD/LED go Sony HX. Most of the reviews say it has the best PQ you can get on an LED LCD. Of course, the price does reflect that... They aren't cheap.

But, they are well over his price point and they also have 3D and internet making your post about as worthless (for him) as mine.

Hey, I'll settle for the worst 55 foot TV, if it's only $1200.00.

Sony Bravia KDL-55EX500 $1249 at Amazon

or

Sony Bravia KDL-55BX520 <$1200 from Walmart, Amazon Marketplace , etc...

Fitting what I'd consider a good set into 1200$ at 55" is gonna be tough if you can't go Plasma.

There is the ST30 Plasma that fits in the range. It has 3D, but the S30 doesn't come in 55". The upside is that it is actually considered one of the better budget units on the market as of today.

There are a few budget model 55" LCD/LED sets in the range you are looking at, but the ones to probably pay the most attention to are the 55LK520 from LG, KDL55BX520 from Sony, and the UN55D600 from Samsung. I'm not too familiar of Toshiba's reputation lately since they only seem to produce budget units these days, or Philips.

Can sets from stores like Walmart be trusted? I saw the Panasonic 55St30 at Target for $999.00 with 10% off coupon. But after looking at a few sets there, the plasmas seemed really dark to me. That's why I am leaning back towards LCD. I was at BB last weekend and saw a 60 Sharp Aquos LCD for about $1100.00 and it had a really nice picture but then read some bad reviews on it here. It was the 732u model I think. I really want the Samsung UN55D7000 series set but right now lowest I saw it was about $1700.00. I was hoping it would drop in price soon due to the 2012 models coming out at the end of this month. If I knew for sure they would drop to at least $1300 I would wait for it.

the sharp is a good set, even the 632... most bang for your buck. i went from plasma and i have been a plasma guy but the 60 632 I have is really good, better than i thought and would buy it again over the ST panny in a heartbeat.

Where did he say $1200.00? I must have missed that. I was only off by about a thousand bucks or so...

How does the KDL55EX621 at Costco for $1199 compare? (55" LED...)

I'm kind of in the same boat, and am contemplating just spending the extra and buying the Sharp LC60LE633U @ Costco for $1349... BB has the LC60LE632 for $1399... seem like basically the same TV...

The Sony 55" NX720 will beat them all. You can find it for $1499. It has Gorilla glass, built in wifi and 3D. It has a great picture.

The Sony 55" EX series is ok but spend a lil more and youll get a much better tv PQ wise.

They r basically the same but the 633 model uses Aquamotion 240 which is designed to give u better motion capabilities, meaning less blur and a crisp image.

Which is a feature that you will probably end up turning off.

Tigerdirect had the Samsung UN55D6400 for $1259 with the code: HVL54214 &
LG 55LW5600 for $1299 with the code: RPO54289.

The Samsung code worked for me yesterday but not today. The LG code only takes off $20. These codes should work, so if you want one of these it might be worth calling.

I'm in the market for 55" as well. I was dead set on the Samsung 7900 or 8000, until I went into to HHGregg and saw that every high-end model LED by Samsung or Sony, has a glossy screen. I don't understand why that is, since I just bought a 37" LED Panny for my bedroom with a matte screen.

I think I may have to go back to checking out the LGs, which have matte screens at 55". I so don't want anything close to my old CRT, and I like the look of the matte.

Are you near a Fry's? Sony KDL55NX720 + Sony BDP-S480 on sale this week for $1300. Saw it at the Fishers, IN, store.

LG 55LK520. Great PQ without any of the uniformity issues of edge lit sets.
I just came back from HHgregg, and I can't say I recommend LG now. They didn't have the LW6500, which is the 240Hz tv, but they did have the LW5600 and 55LK520.

The lag was so bad on these tvs, you can actually see trailing and jerky movements. I also noticed a lot of clouding, it's definitely not sharp, at least compared to Samsung and Sony. I have to say I really didn't want a glossy tv, but pretty much every matte screened LED tv is pretty inferior. I'm back to looking at the Samsungs. I haven't seen a picture that rivals the D8000.

Btw, the sales pressure at HHGregg sucks. Sometimes you just want to look at tvs, not be hassled. I think they might be worse than used car salesmen.

+1

I was shopping with about the same budget as the OP, got to see them all in action against models 2 and 3 times the price and settled on the Sony NX 720 55" and have been extremely happy with it.

What really shocked me, was how poor the LG sets looked. By poor I mean almost unwatchable. Based on many reviews, I originally went in with an LG in mind but after actually seeing them side by side with the Sony's and Samsung's, I crossed the LG's off the list.

So, with that in mind, get to your nearest large electronics store so you can see everything in person before you decide on anything.

Check out the Gorilla Glass on the Sony sets !!

I just replaced my old Toshiba 35" crt with the 55" Sony NX 720 in a room that rendered the crt unwatchable during certain hours of the day and had incredibly obnoxious reflections at night.

It's a night and day difference with the Gorilla Glass on the Sony. Even with full sun on the screen it's still completely watchable and at night there are no reflections.

The glossy screen on any set really make the colors pop and increases the contrast.

Yes. I was about to post the same thing. Here is a photo comparing my matte screen Sony LCD compared to my new HX929 with the Gorilla Glass. Absolutely no difference. I you look at the gloss frame on the old Sony you can see the reflections from the back yard. Doesn't show up on either screen.

I'm sitting here right now with all the blinds in the room wide open and nary a bit of glare. Not sure how they do it, but they did it. I was extremely concerned about glare. Apparently for no reason. Huge relief...

I thought the gorilla glass was glossier. Is your new sony the one on the ground? Sony and Samsung have pretty close PQ, however I think Samsung has bit of an edge with color depth and sharpness. I've looked at a lot of tvs and I think I can say that haven't seen anything better than the D8000. I've seen the HX929, it looked good, but a little pricey. I'm not sure if it's worth the $$, when the D8000 is so good.

My only issue is with the glossy screen, which I'm going to have to get over because all the good tvs have it.

Now if the gorilla glass is know to be less reflective, I may have to go in that direction. I'm not crazy about the chrome frame on the D8000, and the D7900 is getting pretty rare.

Yep it's the one on the floor. It's for my bedroom but I'm messing with it out here until I'm sure everything works okay.

I have read many user reviews that say the Gorilla glass is better with regard to glare than Samsung glass. I'm shocked at how good it is in my viewing environment. I have probably the worst case scenario going on in here. Full wall of windows over there <---- . In fact, the only reason I took a chance on glass is because I knew this set was going inside an Armoire in the bedroom. If it can handle the glare out here then it can probably handle most any scenario. My old Tube set was terrible out here. With this set, there's no glare at all that I can see. Not sure how they did it, but there it is.

After a bit of research, it does indeed seem like the gorilla glass has a bit less reflection than Samsung's glossy screens. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm going to probably go with either the 720 or 820.

Check this hx925 review out. They discuss gorilla glass and its shiny surface.

The tv has Gorilla GLASS, of course it will be reflective. Since Samsung uses a high gloss and not actual glass, its debatable at which shows more reflections. Since ive seen them both in person, to me the GLASS is more reflective than the high gloss but both have some great PQ. Also cause Sonys higher end models(NX n HX) use Gorilla Glass, it can tend to look sharper than just a LCD screen. Basically u can see a good PQ whether your up close or far away. I would like to see more companies use Gorilla Glass, I think it gives a better PQ.
As for LG, while they have used an all glass screen before I dont believe it was Gorilla Glass. I am not of fan of matte screens. They just look to dull. High gloss or Gorilla Glass is the way to go. Not sure what OLEDs will use but for current LED, I think Gorilla Glass is a start. Corning is starting to make Gorilla Glass 2 which the iPhone 5 may use.
