I have a Samsung UN40D6000 connected via optical to a ZVOX-555 soundbar. I know the ZVOX is only virtual surround, but when I've been watching movies it sounds completely stereo to me. The documentation for the Samsung TV mentions that surround sound only works if the device is connected externally (i.e. to a receiver), with the receiver running into the TV; otherwise, any devices connected directly to the TV are converted to stereo.
My question is, is there a benefit to connecting my DVD player, Xbox, HD tuner, etc. to my ZVOX (via composite), and will I get something closer to surround? Or should I stick with connecting those devices via HDMI directly into the TV?
