5.1 Theater Casserole Surprise

What would you do? Want to setup 5.1 in the living room. Have a boatload of "leftovers" to work with. Looking for ideas on what to use, what to leave out.

What I've got -
  • Pair JVC Sp-93 towers (10" woofer ported, small midrange, tweeter).
  • Pair Bose 2.2's
  • Kenwood 5.1 speakers 200 series (sw200 sub, CFS 200 front/center, RS 05 rears).
  • Home built sub with a 12" free to air woofer.
  • Two different size EPI bookshelf (one of each size).

All driven by a Sony 5.1.

My first thought was to just setup the Kenwood's, supplement the bass with the home brew sub, and live with it.

Other thought was to use the towers, add the California speaker as the center, use the 2.2's on the rear, add the homebrew sub, and leave the Kenwood's in the box.

Any and all opinions that don't involve me throwing this all in the garbage are appreciated.

Epicure (EPI) is the brand of small speakers.

You can experiment to see which sound better.

I'd try the Kenwood CFS 200 for center, the two larger EPIs for L/R, the other EPIs for surrounds. Then at least you have reasonable 2-way speakers all around.

Try the sub, too, and set up the AVR accordingly. Try 100 and 80 Hz crossovers.

I suspect those JBL towers are JVC.

Yup JVC. Wishful thinking slip. I actually only have two epi's.

Thanks for the advice.

Can’t help, but I will give you kudos for a provocative thread title!

Here's what I've done now -

Front L/R - Epicure's
Center - Kenwood C-200
Rear's - Bose 2.2's
Sub - Kenwood SW-200, crossover set at 80.

It sounds very good, not perfect, but good. The weakest link seems to be the rears, not sure if that's the weakness of the crappy stereo or the not-so-hot mid/low's of the Bose.

Since you do not have a second pair of EPIs, I'd try the other Kenwoods for the surrounds. They might be a better tonal match than the Bose.

Yep, Kenwood fs-200's for rears. Better overall sound than when I had the Bose hooked up.
