S120pii took a dump, replacement or fix it?

I have had my JBL S120pII for several years, have been very pleased with it. I use it along with the S312II and Yamaha RX-V2700

Tonight the sub started chirping / humming ( I thought we had a strange cricket in the house) But upon inspection, I found it was the subwoofer, it was very warm to the touch on the main panel.

Fix it? or replace it? Replace it with what?

Thanks

If you were pleased with it find out what it would cost to repair it may just be bad caps or a power transistor.

I hunted around the net a bit for repair sites or even a service manual, was surprised to find neither. A friend of mine is a service tech at a high end audio shop, I called him and he said he would be willing to take a look at it, but that a service manual would be helpful.

suggestions on finding a service manual? Or anyone know a reputable service center to ship it to?

Sometimes if you do a sufficient number of Google searches, you will find a site that has the manual. Usually you pay a fee of $15-25 for the download.

By far the best place for the repair would be Harman/JBL/Infinity. You might check with them. Since it has been a number of years since the S120Pii has been sold, they may no longer repair it. You will need to pay to-and-from shipping.

For some repairs, shops will charge $200-300+ and only guarantee the repair for 30-90 days. Your friend may be able to replace a few capacitors and, if lucky, will accomplish the repair. The capacitors deteriorate with age and heat and are usually the primary reason for a failure.

You may need to consider a new subwoofer such as the Hsu VTF3.4 or Outlaw LFM-1 EX, either of which would blow the S120Pii away. I have had two JBL subwoofers and was able to find their service manuals. I replaced the amp on one with the Parts Express 500w Bash amp (which is on sale currently <$200).

4/29/12 update. I found one for sale on craigslist for $160, but it was clear across the country in Phoenix. I posted up on one of the car forum's that I am a member on asking for a favor. One of the locals in Phoenix posted that he was just 10 mins away from the seller and that he works in hi end audio and was willing to go check it out. He got there and called to let me know that the case had begin to separate in one place, but that other then that it tested fine. I sent payment via paypal and my friend took it to Fedex and they packed and shipped it. It arrived Friday. Today I hooked it up and it works fine, but since my case was in better shape, I removed the 8 screws from the amp to find only two wires going to the speaker and one plug going to the two led's on top. Swapped the amp over to my case and all is great.

how much was it to ship? sounds like everything worked out fine. I paid $50 for mine back in the day. It was not working but when I opened it up, the negative wire had come off the woofer, so ez fix.
