Depends on your dir structure. For me:

Backup = 4
Movies = 3
Music = 4
Pics = 5
TV = 3

Here's why: I count the deepest folder AFTER the root (tower). So, it's \\\ ower\\backup (name of the share)\\xanadu\\xanadu.disk.image\\backup 2012-02-24\\files, files, files
That's four levels deep after the root.

Movies: I've got nothing more than three folders deep. I have 75 dirs containing series of films with more than three in a series. SW, ST, Terminator, plus movies I've ripped special features from.

TV: \\\ ower\ v (name of the share)\
ame of show\\season\\files, files, files

Lime recommended I do split level 3 high water for movies.

I haven't set up music and pics yet.

My music and pic folders go like this in my whs: Music>Artist>Album>Song file

Pictures>year>event>pic files

Should I set split level to 4?

I'm not sure what mine is set for. I'm not even sure if I would have changed it from the default since I was not concerned where the files were located. But if I were to guess it's probably at level 4 since all my content(backups, Bd ISos, pictures, etc) has been stored on all 20 storage drives at one time or another. I'll need to take a look tonight.

But for storing the content I use the high water option "The idea behind "High-Water" is to fill disk1 half way, then fill disk2 half way, then disk3 half way, etc. When you've filled the last data disk half way, then it moves back to disk1, filling it 3/4 of the way, then disk2 3/4 of the way, etc." - Limetech

I really didn't care if a movie folder had a BD ISo on one drive, the coverart on another, and the nfo on yet another disc. My main concern was that I could recover from a storage drive loss or a parity drive loss. And in the tests I did before putting permanent data on the array, it reconstructed the data each time when I replaced a drive.

Ok I understand how high water works now.

Can you run scheduled tasks on unRAID?

Just leave it alone and move on. you have bigger fish to fry IMO

mine is stock. caring what disk its on defeats the purpose of user shares. This will be interesting for about 1 day and then you will never think of it again.

Did you install the subs in your theater?

I looked at my split level last night. I don't have anything set for it. It is blank.
post #309 of 643
I have my split level set on three and have my zappiti folders a few levels down so that all zappiti files stay on one disk. I found this speeds up the "Export to Dune" process which, in my case, is really an "export to unraid server" process as I keep the Zappiti files in my Media share.

My share is "Media" and underneath it I have "Movies", "Zappiti" and "TV Shows". Each tv series has its own folder and i don't split the seasons further into folders.

I found that before I set my split levels, I had Zappiti files all over the array and that it would take a long time to export. I could see the server spinning up all the disks and spending a while reading before anything started writing. My Zappiti index is fairly large, I don't recall exactly how many files there are in it but I think it is many thousand, maybe over ten thousand. I have around 800 movies and 400-500 tv shows on the server.

Take some pics for me! I'd love to see the setup.

Well, I received my ICY BOX today, and installed it. It took some work to install it. I didn't have the correct tools, but I had my air compressor and a grinder and removed a couple of the tabs It fits now, and it looks great. I will take some pictures later.

Looks good! Now you just need 2 more cages and you'll be set!

Chris,

After connecting the server to a 8 port gigabit switch I am having speed issues. Some times the speed is 25 to 40 mbps, and other times it won't go any faster than 8 mbps. It is pissing me off because I don't understand why it is doing that.

I feel your pain! It was driving me crazy also.

Are the lights in the back of the switch blinking to indicate its gige?

Are all cables CAT5e/CAT6?

Is the computer you're transferring files from GigE?

I'm such an idiot. For the last year, I was under the impression my SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 SAS SAS RAID Controller was full. ie, no more slots. See the 8 in the model number? Yeah...

Cable and a new WD EARX disk ordered. I can now remove one of the 4 in 3 cages, replace it with a 5 in 3, add a 13th data disk, and dump that ****** PCI SATA controller.

It's a big week here at the Lebowski compound!

Yeah, the lights are solid green indicating full speed gigabit. Both my computer and unRaid are gigabit. The cables are Cat5e.

I stopped transferring the file for about 1 hour, and I can back and transferred again and this time I got over 30 mbps. I don't get it!

Yea I don't know.. Sometimes my speeds drop down to 24-30MB/s but they average at 67MB/s. Right now I check some files I'm transferring and I'm getting 86MB/s.

Maybe Sean will be able to give you some advice tomorrow.

Is that with or without a Parity drive? or are you using a cache drive? I was able to only get over 100 mbps if I didn't have a parity drive.

That was without Parity drive.

I just set up my Parity and Cache drive right now.

does anyone know if I can still watch movies during Parity Sync?
post #324 of 643
Oh so i can add a parity drive later? I just assumed that would have to be done as my first step.

No you can set up your parity drive whenever you feel like. You can also use your parity drive as data drive if you run out of space, but then you will not have any data back up.

Like right now, I've got .8 gb left. I was going to use my parity drive as back up, but I've decided to take the hard drive out of my 2 tb external drive to use it in my server.

However, now I'll have to buy the unraid license for at least 6 drives.

Sure. If someone is able to copy their data to the server, then by all means do it without parity installed. Just ensure the data copied is intact and matches the source. But I think most people have no extra disks, so they must cut, paste, install newly empty disk, repeat.

At least I had to do it that way.

Ok guys this is now the Official unRAID Thread

It will be easier for everyone who has questions about unRAID to keep it in one thread. I'll post some info on the first page so new users will have a better understanding of unRAID.

BTW: regarding split level and movie jukeboxes spreading files all over the disks. The easiest solution to this is to mount DISK1 as a drive and write the jukebox contents to the one disk instead of the USER share on the unraid. problem solved. no messing with split level is required.

I started out with Zappiti files in its own disk outside of the user share but the Dune's can't open more than one SMB share at a time so I put the Zappitit folder in the Media share. I guess I could have used NFS but that seemed more complicated.
