Smallest 7.1 or 5.1 receiver?

I currently have a Sony STR-DG720 and looking to possibly upgrade. What I need is 5.1 or 7.1 receiver that can decode True HD and DTS HD codecs, minimum 3 hdmi inputs, minimum 1 optical input. Don't need much else, already have the speakers. Doesn't need to be the most powerful either. BUT, what is important, is size. It needs to be small in terms of height. Most receivers like the one I have, are big bulky items. I'm going for minimalism and would like something that's about half the size in height as a typical receiver out there. Anything out there like that?

Nope and the industry is to stupid to realize there is a market here.

Drop all analog video and audio sections and make a unit to compete with HTIAB. Do you guys not realize the logic behind a lot of HTIAB purchases are house wives that don't like a 4U AVR plus people don't have the space!

Whoever does this will revitalize their $300-650 line card BIGTIME!

8" rack 3U AVR with no LEGACY I/O is needed and there is a demand just look at this guy!

This also is why silly consumers purchase Bose HTIAB.

Yup an 8" rack 2-3U legacy free AVR with digital IRS2092 based class D would be the bomb!

Damn, thanks for the response. You know how many connections on the back of this receiver are not being used? 80% of them. I'm over the bulky equipment. I'm not 22 anymore. I don't need a cockpit in my living room. I may even ditch the whole 5.1 system for a soundbar. I want good sound with a minimalist look. I just don't want an air traffic control panel sitting in front of me.

Have you looked at the Sherwood 904N?

Good one Ryan and no!!!

That's exactly what I'm talking about though I guess it's better to go full 19" on a 1U than 8" on a 3U.

Looks like a SMART design.

Panasonic had a line like that but they dumped it.

How about the Marantz NR1602?

Thanks Ryan and Florida Gator, look like some good options.

It's beyond me why nobody makes a small, nicely designed (think Apple), Class D AV Receiver, with something like Audissey MultiEQ XT.

I recommend the Cambridge Audio 340R receiver. It is 3.9 inches high, and is a very well-made receiver.

Amazon has it for $499.

The Marantz 1402 is another good possibility, but IMO the Cambridge will perform better, and its price is excellent for the quality.

The Cambridge 540R v.3 has twice the power (100W), is only 4.0 inches high, and is discontinued but is available new at Audiophile Liquidator for $511. It was $900, so that is a heck of a deal. It is a 7.1 receiver and has additional features, including 80 watts per channel with all channels driven!!! They give you a 3rd-party warranty equal to the manufacturer's warranty, not a factory warranty.

Take a close look at the Marantz NR1402 and NR1602 receivers with 50 watts per channel. List prices are $400 and $650 respectively. Both receivers meet your form factor and capabilities. The 1402 has a more basic feature set while the 1602 adds extensive networking capabilities. I have the Marantz NR1602 and $1700 SR7005 and the 1602 gives up very little to the more expensive model.
