How do I view HD "over-the-air" channels on my HD Trinitron?

Your TV doesn't have a QAM (digital tuner). You will need to subscribe and rent a HD cable box from a cable provider or buy an external clear QAM receiver.

You can still get over-the-air HDTV if you purchase an external OTA HDTV tuner. These cost more than your standard low-quality, low-end, at-one-time-coupon-eligible, digital "converter boxes" but are well worth the extra money. Do a bit of research before buying one, since they all seem to fall into at least one of these categories:

• Expensive
• Glitchy or prone to functional problems
• May require additional hardware to work properly

I had the same problem. I have an HTPC hooked up to mine via HDMI so the fix was simple. I just bought a PCI tuner card for $30. Works like a charm. Also, if you have a laptop with HDMI, an Expresscard, or USB TV tuner can be had for cheap.
