Will 40-42" large enough when seated 7' from the tv? - Page 2

LMAO at those THX recommendations. These are living rooms, not movie theaters.

OP already bought the 42
had every intention of buying the 42
just needed some validation from cyber space

He was a "she." Guess you missed that too.

Oh yes. The box wasn't damaged, but it had been sufficiently banged around enough so that a small piece of plastic had broken off the tv; from where exactly, I couldn't tell. The screen is unprotected except for a clear plastic one sided tape, and a very thin foam wrap, only slightly thicker than paper.

The screen had vertical lines. I would not be surprised if the tv had been placed or had fallen screen first, and then been stepped on, leaving the vertical lines on the screen.

I've seen shippers not only dump, but throw my packages on the ground several feet. Heavy, fragile packages.

These shippers have no regard whatsoever.

Tough to tell these days.

To all who disagree with the THX recommendations....

Sitting 4-6 feet away from a 42" isn't too close and in no way makes the room seem like a home theater. Your eyes can adapt to the size difference very quickly and before you know it at around 5 feet the 42" looks a bit too small. I'm surprised how many people recommend large viewing distances from not so large TV in this thread since normally the trend is to recommend the largest set that fits into your room/existing TV stand/furniture on this forum. As for passive 3D, I can't comment since I only have 2D displays in my home.

Instead of buying a bigger screen, just sit closer to the tv.

I am buying a TV for a living room that is 17 x 19 feet. If will be sitting about 16 feet away from the TV, what would be an optimal size? I was thinking I would buy a 60 inch LCD, but wanted others comments or thoughts on 60inch for this size room. I think a 70 inch would over power this living room.

According to http://www.best-3dtvs.com/guides/bes...wing-distance/, you multiple the screen size by 1.56 to get the optimal viewing distance. So 16'/1.56 = 10.25 feet. So, you need a 123 inch TV LOL!

Btw, I have a 59" TV, and according to that formula, the optimal viewing distance is 7.67 feet. That's exactly where I am, and I must say that it seems perfect to me!

Probably fine at 42", but 46-47" will be nice too and might fit in the same space. There is such a thing as being too big. We sit 9 to 10-feet from a 46" in the family room and 12-feet from a 46" in the bedroom and it's fine.

55-60 is fine at that distance. You're right on the 70", especially if this isn't a dedicated "TV" room.

This.

Look, if you're building a home theater fine with a larger screen - but even Stewart Filmscreen will tell you the THX recommendation will be to much in most cases. You won't be looking at a flat pannel for that anyway. Like sadmaker said, these are living rooms.

I have a 42" and sit only about 6' from the screen. For the first few weeks I thought I should have gotten a smaller TV. Two+ years down the road and I wish I had gotten at least 47". Not sure my wife would agree, however.

Large enough for what? When I was a kid we had a 21" TV in our 13' x 13' living room. I never once thought to ask my buddies if they thought it was large enough.

Six years ago we debated between a 42 and a 46. We went with the 42 because we were still watching a lot of SD content, and because in our room we can move the chairs between 6 and 9 feet away from the screen. 9 feet on a 42 is none too close when watching Buffy DVDs.

We recently bought a 47 for the same room, and the same viewing distances seem to work fine. It's not all that much bigger; almost everything we watch is HD now (and the chairs can still be moved back); and the new TV has much better PQ.

It's not just size; it's also what you watch and how good the calibrated PQ is. Too-bright screens are uncomfortable to sit close to.

21? We had a 19!

We are truely spoiled these days.
