Which cable should I use to connect my PC to my PN51D8000 ?

Hello!

I have a new PN51D8000 from Samsung and I'd like to connect it to my PC. As I understand there are different VGA cables (VGA, SVGA et.c) and they all represent different resolutions.

Which cable type would allow me to use the maximum resolution that my TV allows? Wouldn't it be HDMI instead of VGA? But can I connect my PC to my TV via and VGA to HDMI cable? Is that even going to work or am I over thinking this?

There aren't different types of VGA cables. There are different VGA resolutions, but they all use the same 15-pin D-Sub cable.

Look in the manual for your TV to see what VGA resolutions it supports. It may accept a 1920x1080 signal; then again, it may not.

No cable alone will convert "VGA to HDMI". You may have a graphics card which has a VGA-style output which can be switched with software to output VGA or HDMI.

Check to see if the PND8000 will accept a 1920x1080 signal over VGA. If so, try any VGA cable and see how that works.

A VGA-to-HDMI cable may not work since VGA video cards tend to not be HDCP compliant so the TV may not display a video signal in this case (due to copyright limitations).

Thanks for the replies but Samsung doesn't show any info on the resolution.

Called Samsung and the guy on the phone didn't sound like he knew much about it. He said he'd need to research it got back to me after a 2-3 min wait on hold. He says I can put a regular VGA (the obvious choice) and a DVI to HMDI adapter. My Graphics cars supports DVI so I guess I'll try that.

What outputs does your computer have?
HDMI to HDMI would be optimal
VGA to VGA should work as long as your tv accepts it at 1080p and you are not planning on watching blu-ray movies on it
DVI to HDMI will work without potential resolution limitations but again, no blu-ray movies.

Only purpose for connecting my PC to my TV is mostly for youtube (my TV has youtube but I rather use a Keyboard ) and some Videos I have saved on my PCs HD. Also, I'd like to occasionally play some Games on my PC but use the TV.


Ordered a 25ft cable from Monoprice.

The detailed PC resolution specs should be listed in the owner's manual, they won't be listed in the abbreviated online specs. There's probably a large chart in the manual that tells you exactly which resolutions the PC input will accept.

The Monoprice cable worked! Only issue I have is that the picture doesn't fill the entire TV Screen. I have big "edges" on each side of the screen. I tried different settings and "fit to screen" is the best. It still doesn't fit the entire screen though.... hmmm

I am glad I found this thread. I am using a mini HDMI to HDMI adapter and the screen fills and graphics look amazing (I am running two Nvdia 570GTXs in SLI). The problem is, and I am embarrassed to say this, I don't know how to get the sound to play through my TV or receiver. Can anyone help me out with this?
