HT Newbie Here, Sorry if this is a common question

Hello All,

The name's Mike, and I'm new to HT and to this forum. I'm about to move into my new house and I am working on building my HT setup. I have chosen to use a Pioneer VSX-1021 as my AV receiver in my HT setup. Keep in mind that I just joined this forum today, and after a few hours of researching this forum, I may chose to use a different receiver.

Anyway, I have a quick question regarding the use of the receiver. I plan to buy the receiver and get my speakers later(once the wife gets over the sticker shock of the receiver). I am trying to only buy one 15' HDMI cable and use shorter runs for the components since all of my components are located in my entertainment center, and the TV is on the wall. I want to know if it's possible to run all of my sources to the receiver, then run a single HDMI from receiver to my TV and still use the TV speakers to hear the components, or will the HDMI out on the receiver only work for video? If this is possible, will I hurt anything by using this method for a month or two.

I apologize if this is a common question, I attempted to use the search function, however the majority of the results were for "Speakers without receiver"

Thanks in advance
Mike

That method should work just fine. Most new AVRs have a "standby through" feature which allows the audio and video to pass through to the TV from the source components with the AVR in standby mode. You won't hurt anything! And even after you eventually get your speakers, you can continue to use the standby through feature when you don't want to use the speakers.
