The really scary part is the way that the wall pierced the car like it was a knife. Luckily it was a foot or two behind the driver's seat but imagine if the point of impact was where Martin was sitting instead of behind him. I've got to think that might have killed him or at least shattered his hip so badly he'd never have walked again.

my guess (sadly) is that we mght have had our first nascar fatality in awhile.... with the way the drivers are locked into position in the car, his body would have taken a massive wallop...

once more it's proven that a race car can find the worst possible spot to impact, regardless of how many safer barriers, etc. get erected...

just glad mark survived it...

I'm pretty sure NASCAR is going to take this as another lesson learned and will take action to correct it pretty quickly. Could be tires or water barrels stacked at the entrances, reshaping them, or something else.

Yep, and as usual he pulled his Big Baby move and refused to talk to the media after the bad pit call left him out of the chase. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. wink.gif

He did not have an obligation to talk to anyone after the race is over. Only the top 5 finishers do.
Doesn't make him any less of a baby for only wanting to talk when things go good. He and Tiger are the two biggest babies in sports right now.
Kyle? He was interviewed by an ABC/ESPN reporter after the race.
Not that I saw, and I scanned through all the interviews on my recording after they blew the chase. I saw in the paper next day that he was unavailable to talk to the media after ripping Dave Rogers (crew chief) a new one. Maybe I missed it.

I'll admit I didn't watch much of this last race, but what I did was horrible, PQ-wise. (on DishNetwork) Looked worse than SD.

You didn't miss much, that one went down as one of the most boring races of the year.

I'd have to agree with Junior's comments that he doesn't even want to run at Talladega or Daytona anymore.

Asked for suggestions as for what NASCAR could do to fix the problem, Earnhardt Jr. said he was just a driver, not an engineer. But he wondered aloud why smart people couldn't come up with a way to separate the cars a bit more than they are now.

"Everybody can get on the chip about it and get all excited about what just happened, but for the longevity of the sport, that ain't healthy," he said. "I don't care what anybody says. It's good for the here and now – it'll get people talking today – but for the long run, that's not good for the sport, the way that race ended and the way the racing is. It's not going to be productive for years to come."

He's right but NASCAR doesn't care because fans like pack racing and the potential big wrecks. Just look what happened when the tandems got going a couple of years ago, they changed the rules to force them back into packs because fans said tandems were boring.

I'm not sure that any aero package is going to break up the packs like Junior wants, and/or make Talladega a handling track.

Even if the wreck didn't happen, seeing 4 wide around the entire track was freaking awesome. Jr can go race on little bitty race tracks if he wants to.

I hated the tandem racing. I'm glad they fixed that. I wish they would be able to go back to the type of racing when there was like 100 lead changes in a race, where every lane could speed up to the front.

One thing will, a worn out racetrack. Case in point, Daytona a couple years ago before they repaved it. ISC and Speedway Motorsports have been Repave happy lately. Drivers don't want a one groove racetrack. They want a worn out track, with multiple grooves for passing. Where they have to search for grip and speed.
For Daytona sure, but not Talladega. That has always been a wide-open, pedal to the floor track no matter how old the surface is. The only way you can add handling (that I can think of) is to make the cars unstable, which introduces more possibility for wrecks.
The way to end this sort of racing is to change the track, or simply stop racing at Talledega. I agree with Jr. as well, as soon as I saw the wreck I thought the very same thing, when are they finally going to end this? Seeing Stewart's car land on Kayne was pretty scary, he could have been killed, is that what it's going to take end this nonsense, someone dying?

On another note, what the hell was Johnson thinking straddling Jr's door like that with an obviously flat tire? If that tire had come apart it could have severely damaged his leg.
Someone already did die in a plate race. Earnhardt?? All they did as a result was make them wear the hans device. The cars are built so safe now. Guys used to have big wrecks and break a leg or arm. Nobody even gets hurt now

Yep, although technically it was Daytona. biggrin.gif

Getting rid of Daytona and Talladega, well then you would have to get rid of all tracks where they got 170+. I'm sure they hit speeds near 200 at California, Pocono, Charlotte, those would have to go bye-bye. Or if you got rid of the banked tracks you lose Bristol, Dover, Darlington.

Well apparently the Talledega crash had a big causality that will definately affect the ratings for the next two weeks. One of the chasers will not be racing due to TWO concussions he recently suffered at Talledega and a tire test in Kansas. Regan Smith (who was supposed to replace Kurt Busch this week) instead will be driving that Diet Mountain Dew 88 car for Hendrick Motorsports, while AJ Allmendinger will drive the Phoenix Racing car vacated by Busch,

I wonder how far NASCAR's ratings will fall without it's poster boy out there racing. The folks at the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network must be having a heart attack about now.

The news conference from this morning at Charlotte.
