My setup is pretty straightforward; I have a family room that is setup with 5.1 surround, and a bedroom that is setup for 2.1. My HTPC running WMC outputs HDMI, and later I'm going to add a Ceton Echo to extend my HTPC. The Echo also has HDMI output. I need something that can take the sound from each HDMI output, send it to all of my speakers/subs for both the 5.1 and 2.1 (over regular 14/2 speaker wire), and make them sound good. The idea of handling it all with a multi-zone device sounds ideal, but it doesn't have to be.


I don't feel like I need the billions of features that all current receivers have. Just make the speakers sound awesome. That is all.

Budget is $1500. Speakers are KEF T305 for 5.1, and the 2.1 has Polks (PSW111 for sub).

Too much, imho. I would suggest spending much less than that and get a Denon or Onkyo AVR with Audyssey MultEQ XT. The speakers are not terribly demanding and have little low frequency response but their on-wall mounting would benefit from good room EQ.

I agree with Kal. Something like the Onkyo 709 would do nicely.

Except the 709 will only do analogue in zone2 and I don't see how a sub could be run in zone 2 - unless you connect 2 subs to the 709 and run another cable into zone 2

I noticed the Denon 2312 only has one hdmi out, whereas the 3312 has two. Wouldn't two be necessary, since I have two completely independent zones that are each driven with different inputs?

The way to do this is to use a sub with built-in crossovers for the the stereo speakers. No AVR that I know of has a sub output or bass management for the additional zones and few have digital output for them.

Good point. A splitter might do but the Onkyo does have dual HDMI outputs.

For the second (2.1) zone, all wires are independent and run back through the walls to the centralized AV closet. This means I can't hook up the speakers to the sub (without hacking up my walls). Does this mean I have to buy two separate receivers? Is there anything coming on the market this year that will have a sub out for zone 2?

Probably.
I doubt there will be one.

Adding the constraints of installed wiring limits the options.

Couldn't you extend the left and right speaker wires to reach the sub, then wire from sub to speakers? Not as elegant as wiring from nearby in walls but would work I think.

What about a receiver / small amplifier combination. Will that be a more efficient option than two receivers, without having to change the in-wall wiring?
