Replacement of TX NR609 appears to maintain its segment-pushing featureset with third zone, 8 HDMI in, dual HDMI outs, and networking (no airplay sadly).

Onkyo seems to favor feature over basic audio accuracy in this regard...

doesn't THX select-2 ensure audio accuracy along with audio quality and SNR.

Check out the specs at onkyo, compare 609 to the 616 amp section. The 616 amps are crap compared to the 609. THX must mean less than it use to. Onkyo amps are the beast in their price class, but those days maybe over. The new Onkyo amps may not be no better than denon yamaha and pioneer. I get a 609 over 616 if sound is the most important to you!

Onkyo sold 645,000 AVRs last year and lost >$20 million...
As the mass market & big box retailers push for lowest price and most features over performance in an AVR, Onkyo is simply responding to the demand..

Just my $0.02...

I wonder if the new receiver was design before the different mergers or after? If it's before, I wonder if the other parties put some "pressure", if you will, or a timeline on Onkyo to turn things around financially, thus the cost saving compromises.

Not really...
Virtually all CE brands are losing big $ including Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic...
They have no choice but to cut internal components/costs to save $ as to survive in the longer term. Another contributing economic factor is that they all report their financials in Japanese YEN, the current yen to $ exchange is 76 YEN to $1 due to the severe weakening of the US $.. A decrease of almost 40% over the last year..

Just my $0.02...

Can you tell me what is inferior on the 616 amps compared to the 609 amps? Why would they downgrade the amp (sound) quality?

I was planning on buying a 609 and am thinking of maybe waiting for the new model...
