With the right software you can burn AVCHD files in HD to regular DVD-R or DVD+R as long as they are not more than either 17 or 18 mbs (not sure of exact limit). Over that you will need to burn the HD to a Blu-Ray and, therefore, will need a Blu-Ray burner.
Canon HF M41 comes with pixela corporation videobrowder 1.1 software which makes it very easy. You can record in the highest quality for AVCHD (24 Mbs using format MXP, and either burn that to Blu-Ray, or the software will automatically downsize to 17mbs for writing HD to regular DVD.
May wish to get BD-RE to start so you can experiment and rewrite the BD if desired.
