I have the 215. It's noisy, especially at the start and for the first few chapters.

I really doubt the 220 will be any quieter. I stuck mine at the back of the cabinet, and close the doors, so that has taken care of the issue, by and large.

Listen man, I'm sorry to point this out, but it's got to be at least the fifteenth time you proclaim how noisy your 2011 player is. And despite testament from others that our players are whisper quiet, and advice that you get a replacement unit, you seem to prefer keeping it and complaining about it and insisting that all Panasonic players are bad.

And that's just the noise. From your posts I get the impression you hate everything about the Panasonic players - now including the 2012 models which you have not even tried.

I don't know a gentler way to put it, but it really seems as if you've made it your mission to scare people away from Panasonic. Of course members come here for candid opinions and reviews, but if you simply have a bad/defect unit and refuse to replace it, I think you are doing those members a disfavor.

I've been thinking this many times now reading your posts, but this time l simply couldn't sit on it any longer. That's how you come across to me anyway...

Edit: I have a 110 (2011) and it is almost completely silent, except when loading and spinning up a disc. I have no experience with 2012 models.

Well, I'll chime in that MY 210 is by far the noisiest DVD or Blu-ray I have ever owned. It is not a deal breaker, but it is noisier than others. I have no idea how many more db's we are talking, but more...I can live with it.

Thanks, I believe you. Did you request a replacement for it?

If these players are noisy by design, I don't see how some of us can have whisper quiet units (even if we all have different tolerances). I think it is more likely that the units vary in their production, with some being a little off balance.

What prompted my response this time was that, even as I acknowledge that some 2011 players are noisier than others (evidently), claiming that 2012 players are generally noisy on that basis - without even trying one - is far fetched in my opinion.

do the new panasonic players have cinavia build into them?

Does avatar promotion apply to new players or expired?

LOL, I don't know a gentler way to put it, but it really seems as if you need to see a psychiatrist to treat your paranoid delusions.

I don't know. I don't see any mention of it in the documentation.

The exclusivity agreement expires on Wednesday but people with 2011 players and coupons can redeem then if they get them in the mail by March 31st. There is no free disc promotion for the 2012 line of players (or at least not one for the 220).

BTW, there's been a firmware update for the 220 and 320 already, from 1.02 to 1.22 with the release note, "VIERA Connectâ„¢ compatibility and other improvements". I've run across one bug thus far, in that it takes the player minutes to turn itself off, during which time you cannot turn it back on (scrolling "please wait" across its display). EDIT: the update fixed that--now it turns off in a few seconds.

Its in there, I can't have it in front of me right now but I do recall seeing it mentioned in the manual towards the back somewhere I recall it being shaded and mentioning that Cinavia is built in to it.

I think you've just talked me out of the 220 as main reason i want to get this is to play media mkv / wmv / divx (europe based) from my NAS drive

Will probably look into the new samsung 2012 lineup as they play everything.

Cheers,

Just wanted to ask any 220/320 owners about two items:

1. Do these players still have the "Playback Information" screen as I like that and use it a lot?
2. I haven't heard any owners tell us how the 2D to 3D conversion works? Does it work great or is it just another gimmick to sell players?

Cheers,

Funny that you say that. I've tried both LG and Samsung and keep going back to Panasonic because they are the ones that I've found out that play everything. I don't use the media stuff that you're talking about but I do use DVD-RAM and other types of DVD, BD media which have always played on the Pannys. Also, the Panny is the only player that I've seen that does "fast play" which I also use a lot.

Thank you. Excellent response, very insightful, shows that you care about providing members here with accurate information. Please share any other experience you have with the 2012 players.

Thanks again!

I thought the 110 and above models didn't play DVD RAM-it's not listed in their specs on the Panny website. I'd love to get a Panny BR if it would,,,
post #136 of 3692
DVD-RAM is practically a Panny standard. So, it is no supprising other brands no longer support this. I personally never saw a DVD-RAM disc in my life and I don't regret it either So is the Beta Max tap But I do have quite a few HD DVDs

What ciaran75 meant is he want the player to play his collection of media files on his portable hard drive or stream from PC. This is where Panny players pale compared to other brands.

The only reason I don't own a Panasonic Blu-ray player is because of how noisy the drives are. I've bought and returned three different ones (two 110s and one 210), and they all have drive noise that is unacceptable to me. I admit that I'm a little sensitive to noises like that from my AV equipment, but the Panasonic players have always driven me to distraction with their noisy drives.

Yeah--it's in the very end of the manual.

Its a media watermarking system. Supposedly not detectable on playback it can be detected by the player which can refuse to play it. Like Macrovision, etc.

I finally was able to get some MKV titles to play using the "network drive" function (what is the DLNA function for then?) and I have some MP4 titles that I successfully converted using mkvmerge and they play ok so I am set there.

Does it not play mp4 or m4v files through DLNA?
Yeah, I really do believe it's inherent to the design of the player. It rotates up quickly which accounts for the fast load times, but also creates a lot of noise in the process.

What brand of player did you eventually get? How did PQ compare to the panasonic?

DLNA doesn't care about file type but the video content inside the file. It is up to DLNA server to recognize file formats and extract the video stream. The problem with Panny players is that it has a rather limited pickings through DLNA or network drive or USB. Basically, if the video is not from your AVCHD camcorder, you could consider it unplayable in the player. You will have to re-encode and convert your non-compliant video files into the formats the player can accept (basically is AVC or MPEG2 encoded, standard 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p with AC3 or PCM audio).

I got a Sony. From my experiences with many brands and players over the years, the Sonys have given me the least trouble of any sort; in fact, no trouble that I can think of.

I've always thought the Panasonic players produced a marginally superior picture, but the Sony PQ is fine.

You mean the DLNA server demuxes the video stream from the container format?

The video content in pretty much all of my files is H.264 -- shouldn't that work?

The Panasonic UK website has a 2012 products page:

http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_G...sCategory.html

Compare all three models here:

,

I saw that this morning when I was looking for an online copy of the users manual (no such luck), but I missed that table--thanks. Rightfully it should contain the BBT01, since it's part of this year's line of 3D BD players (not in the list of new products on the UK site--maybe it's not being marketed there). Looks like the 320 and 500 have "High Clarity Sound Plus" and "Digital Tube Sound" (the latter which only applies when you have the output formats set to PCM). The "High Clarity Sound" bit used to just turn off the analog outs when using HDMI to eliminate the possiblity of interference; I wonder what the "Plus" is? Especially given their new Uniphier processor chip, which all models have: "The UniPhier single chip signal processing LSI employs a simplified circuit architecture that eliminates unnecessary wiring, resulting in reducing noise on the picture and sound signal to the absolute minimum. The UniPhier chip produces high clarity sound and turns off the analog video circuit when not needed – otherwise the analog video circuit is working even when not in use, causing interference to the other circuits".

the remote from the 500 is different from the one supplied with the 320. I always wondered if the one from the 320 would be easy to use with almost no buttons.

Where'd you hear that? EDIT: Never mind--I see the picture on the UK site:

It'll be interesting to see what the touchpad UI looks like. It'd have to be godawfully good to tempt me to keep an extra remote at hand.

That till depends. It has to fit the AVCHD standard which means you have to experiment with compression levels, resolutions, frame rates and bit rate.
