5.1 setup for new HT, questions - Page 2

I know there is a seperate Sub forum, but I thought I would keep this question on my current thread. In searching today, I noticed Rythmik sells a kit (DS1500) for around $600. This saves a good amount of money, and I am a pretty good wood worker. This seems like a no brainer to do this, or some other DIY sub, am I missing something?

I think you'd get an overall better sub for the money with the HSU VTF-15h. To build your own servo controlled subwoofer, it can be a bit daunting for the first time DIY'er.

If you screw things up, you're out $619.

You are probably correct. Ok, I am sold, VTF-15 it is.

On the surrounds, could I use something like the PSB CW50R for the surrounds? For one, the future wife will love the in-walls, and I like the $300 compared to $900. I know PSB makes the CW260, but those are more than the S5's.

What I am thinking about, is going to a 7.1 setup. I could put CW50R's in as the rears, and then CW50R's, or maybe CW60R's since they have pivoting tweeters, as the side surrounds.

Nice and wife friendly.

I wouldn't go with the round in-walls. Their dispersal pattern would be "off" for a main home theater setup. Besides, those look like they're more for in-ceiling mounting for ambient sound in a kitchen or bedroom.

If at all possible, match your surrounds with their in-room counterparts for proper timbre matching. A PSB dealer should be able to tell you which ones have matching tweeters, other mid and lower frequency drivers, and crossovers. I don't see in-wall models that seem to match up with PSB's Image line, but I could be wrong.

Bipolar/dipolar surrounds for the sides, direct radiating speakers for the rears. You'll have a good mix of dispersed and direct surround ques.



The typical 7.1 layout is: side surrounds at 90 degrees to the main listening space, rears at 150. That's how many 8 channel soundtracks are monitored and mixed for.

I posted my question to PSB and got this response.

"The CW50, CW60, CW80 and CW160R/S all match well to the Image line. The CW160R/S would be the best one.

Being that you pointed out the S5, have you seen the CW260 Model?"

I have not, but you might want to ask them about their rectangular in-walls that match the Image line of in-room speakers (direct radiating and bipole surround).

Again, I don't recommend the round in-walls for a main home theater installation... only a secondary one for another A/V zone in a bedroom or living room where critical audio quality is not warranted.

Just to finish this thread off, I have everything setup and it sounds great. The B6 fronts sound fantastic, and I feel the CW60's work fine as the rears and surrounds.

I went with the VTF-15H, but I still need to get it setup correctly. I found out my seating location is in the null spot in the middle of the room. I need to do a subcrawl and find a better spot for it. Dr. HSU suggested I put it directly behind my seating location, so I might try that too.
