Need Help Unique Stage Build Design Question - With Pic

I am slowly converting my basement into a theater and after 1 year of having the screen hanging on the front wall I have decided to build a stage...I know a little backwards but the room was previously finished for a few years before I started the theater project.

As you can see in the pics I have steps that lead from the basement to the main floor of the house...which obviously cannot be moved.

What I need help with, is incorporating the steps into the stage.
I plan to re-carpet the entire room so no need to salvage the carpet.
The total width is 12'8" and I will need 14" in height to incorporate 2 steps into the stage. The 3rd step up which is also the landing will get cut back to be flush with the wall so that it does not protrude into the room as it does now.

Being that my sub is also in the front I will need to make sure that the center portion of the stage is only 1 step high so the sub will fit somwhere under the screen but ontop of the stage.
I also plan on moving the screen up on the wall approximately 2 inches to, because I think it is too low and to also give me a little more room to fit the sub under the screen.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can you give us a floor plan with some dimensions? Just sketch something up more or less to scale and shoot a pic of it. Helps to visualize the entire space.

Where are your LCR speakers?

petew, I think I have a sketch somewhere already that I can post.
But for startesr the room is 12'8"w x 25'l with 8'8" high ceilings.

Just come off at the second step, and make the one step down to the floor, next to the wall, but long enough, that a person is not going to fall off of the stage, if they miss it in the turn, or just place a step across the front the whole length, then you do not have to worry, but make it wide enough, that they do not go short stepping down.

After scouring many great builds on the forums, I think I have decided to make a stage similar to the one below.
However I need to make the top level around 14 1/4 inches high so that when I come from the existing landing to the top level of the stage it is as close to a normal stair riser.

A few questions that I am hoping someone can help me with:

1. Will a 14" high stage look too imposing??

2. Will a 36" to 40" wide stage stick out like a sore thumb into the room?

3. Any suggestions on what lumber combo to use to make up the 14 + inches of the stage height?

Thanks

I would make a mock up with some plywood and concrete blocks to see how it looks. What is the rise & run of the current steps there right now? Figure with the height you need, that would be two rises of 7 1/8" each for the stair.

The builder beat me to the follow up, after I edited this. Their explanation is what I would go with, if it was me.

2x4 flat plus 2x12 plus two layers of 3/4 decking = 14.25. Attach the 2x4 to the bottom of the 2x12 and build the square perimeter. Hang 2x10s off the perimeter leaving a gap at the bottom. Fill with insulation.

These may help. The stage was built in 4 parts then screwed together.

Thanks Big on the construction suggestion.
Any thoughts if this stage is going to look too big height and depth wise?
I also contemplated doing a reverse curve towards the stage, but not sure how the steps would work out.
By the way, I read the Bacon Race build beginning to end....you guys did an amazing job!!

The stage in the Sunset Cinema pic looks like 13" to me (11.5+.75+.75). If you put a 5/4 flooring on top of that, you are right where you need to be.

So to answer your question: no, I don't think 14" tall will be imposing. you have 3/8" to play with on tread heights (ie they can vary by 3/8"), so you have a little wiggle room. Of course it is always better to have them the same.

Also, if possible, I would cut that top tread back so it is flush with the wall. I am puzzled as to why the top tread (ie the raised floor on the other side of the wall) protrudes into the room by 4". I think the stage would look better without that sticking into the room.

Mr. Tim thanks for the info.
The top step/landing that sticks out is actually part of the pre-made steps so it will end up flush with the wall once I rip the steps out.

Any chance you could flip the room so the entrance is in the back? With 25 foot length you could make the area by the entrance a riser for a second row of seating. That way people would enter into a flat space with 3 steps down to the first row.

Beer party,
I have a sliding patio door at the other end and a 1/2 bath that would be blocked by the screen, so flipping the room, while a good idea, is most likely not going to happen.

I think I am ok with the height of the stage but am concerned that 44 inches in depth will be a bit deep for a stage.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with that. Big stages can look pretty good in a room, best would be to do a 3D mockup and see if you like the look and feel at that dimension.

Do you have kids? A big stage is a kid-magnet. That can be both good and bad, depending on your kids and the cost of your screen.

I have 4 grand kids and my wife will think the stage is a good thing when they are up on it dancing.....me on the other hand....well that is another story!

If I could do a false wall then I wouldn't second guess the size but the stairs limits what I can do.

Thanks for the input!
