Smartphone calibration

Just ran a calibration check on a HTC desire AMOLED smartphone display. The greyscale tracking is nothing short of superb. Gamma is also first rate, with a steady 2.3 throughout 0ire to 100ire. The performance betters my Sony grade 1 broadcast CRT monitor.

Colour quality is good. Luminance being good. However, the gamut is the only thing that is out, as it is very wide (Highly saturated).

I managed to get the colour temp to track 65k by using an app called Screen adjuster', adjusts the individual RGB levels, also adjusts screen contrast level.

The image from these AMOLED screens are fantastic. However, there is a slight colour distortion when viewed at wider angles.

Anyone else measured the performance of their smartphones, just wondered how the Apple Retina display would fair?

What methods are you using to display patterns to measure, and what meter are you using?

Edit: Thanks for the app info. I downloaded it, and will play with it once I figure a way to get reference grade patterns to display on my phone...

I wouldn't imagine measuring too difficult, most can play back .mp4 files, so just have to transcode AVS709 patterns to 720p if it has difficulty playing back 1080p.

In fact, some phones have hdmi out, and they could be a valid signal generator (a very portable one). Someone would just need to measure their output against a reference source and who knows, we might even end up with a list of valid ones that could be used as a signal generators!

I'm using I1D2/HCFR to measure with. There is an app called voodoo, which provides the colour and greyscale test patterns.

It might seem crazy to measure these screens. However the image seemed so good that I was interested how it would measure technically and was very surprised. You just don't expect high performance from such a small screen.

Now, it would be great if there was an app to allow for colour management.

Combine that with a google tv box which has HDMI in and out and you have an affordable VP.

I calibrated my Droid Bionic last month so it's so funny to even see a thread like this. I used the voodoo IRE test patterns and the CF Lumens app to adjust as needed. Not much control there but it's better now than what it was. BTW CF Lumens won't run without chainfire 3D but If your concerned about how your display looks then chainfire is a must have app!

what are your RGB values.

I see i can“t go lower than = only raise it.
