What is wrong with my Denon AVR-591 Receiver?

I got this used Denon AVR-591 receiver and I have no idea whats wrong or if I'm doing something wrong. But, when i first got it, i tested it out with just one speaker and it worked fine. But once I actually got it setup, I had no sound from any of the sources. Also, theres supposed to be an on-screen display, and that doesn't show up at all. I use an HDMI cable to go from the receiver to the TV. But i tried the component (the yellow one) from the receiver to the tv and all i got was just these black "waves". I have triple checked all the cables and made sure they were properly connected. I know all the cables are good because they were working right before i got this receiver. I've gone through all the settings i can on the display of the receiver and nothing has worked. I've tried playing music through all different inputs and i'm still not getting anything. The speakers i used to test the receiver, when i could get sound, are the same speakers i'm using now. I opened it up and it didn't look like any fuses were blown, but i'm not an expert, so i could be wrong. The TV I am using is a sony wega, if that makes a difference.

Whenever you get a used/open box item, it's generally best to reset the microprocessor (p. 70) to ensure all settings are restored to their factory defaults. Once you've completed the reset, run AUTO SETUP to setup the speakers.

I've already done this. And when I run auto setup, it doesn't detect any speakers. It just says detecting FL on the receiver display. And I don't know what's it's displaying on the tv screen because I'm not getting a signal.

Okay well I found out something new with my receiver... I am able to play audio, but I have to go to test tone start and then back out of it and I'll have audio. But if I turn the volume down all the way, while something is playing, and then turn it back up, there's no sound at all and have to go through the test tone again. And I have to go through the test tone every time I turn it off, then back on. Also, I can only get sound when the surround mode is set to direct.
