TiVo may stop subsidies of retail channel DVRs

Looks like Tivo might stop offering their units at below cost to entice subscriptions.

Will this give a second life to units like the ChannelMaster 7400 or kill prospects for OTA DVR's totally?

I'm glad I purchased mine a couple of days ago. I would kick myself if I had waited too long and the price had gone back up to $500 or more.

So, will service prices go down since it isn't supporting the hardware? Yah right!

It depends on what the "actual" prices are. If the basic premiere will go up to $300+, then the CM7400 will get a boost. But I really think that htpc's will be the real winner here. And this will really help the upcoming Ceton stand-alone model that they will be releasing.

From what I've read about the cabelco/DirectTV Tivo's, they aren't anywhere as nice as the retail versions. So maybe Tivo can get away with it. But many people already think Tivo's are too expensive, so this just may force them out of the retail business and they'll have to depend on the pay-tv providers for income. Oh, wait! Thanks to all of the lawsuits, they already do!
