Pionerr DV-48AV Vs Oppo DV-980H for Audio Only (SACD/DVDA/HDCD)

Looking for a SACD/DVDA player that outputs DSD 5.1 over HDMI.

Also not looking to spend much money.

From everything I've seen, these 2 look like my best options. Here are the pros and cons i've come up with:

Oppo:
Plays HDCD (which I don't currently own)

Pioneer:
Slightly better specs

am i missing anything? I'm leaning towards the Pioneer because the specs are better and it looks like it was probably a higher end unit in its day. HDCD is a cool feature, and i would probably find some HDCDs, but not worth a lesser player.

I've got the DV-48AV, it plays everything I've thrown at it. There won't be any difference between the two over HDMI anyways.

The DV-48AV was available on closeout for $99 for a very long time. That's what I paid for mine, so I don't know how "high end" it is. I wouldn't pay more than $50 or $60 for a used one, and that would have to be mint.

If you can find one, the DV-49AV that replaced it was almost identical.

That's a good point about the HDMI. Is there anything else that would make one better than the other?

also... the DV-49AV also did 5.1 DSD over HDMI? I'll keep my eyes out for that.

They really aren't much different. Both use a Mediatek chipset for DVD up-conversion, and play most of the same formats.

Yes, they both did.

I don't think the Oppo DV-980H can output dsd over hdmi since it doesn't have hdmi 1.3. I believe the Oppo converts to pcm and the outputs via hdmi.

I used to have the Oppo 981 and could not get dsd. When I switched to a Sony BR player, I was able to send a dsd stream to my receiver.

Only needs HDMI 1.2 for SACD playback. My Cambridge Audio DVD89 is a 980H clone (essentially) and it sends DSD via HDMI to my receiver.

I didn't know that 1.2 is all you need. I no longer have my 981 so I can't test the dsd function. Maybe I didn't have it set up properly.

According to OPPO's comparison chart the 981 (and 983) didn't do DSD via HDMI. The 980 did.

I have an Elite 48 (and a 58) and it's a fine player. For audio quality I doubt you would notice a difference between either one but the 48 shows a better S/N ratio (115 vs. >100).
