Epson 1080ub vs 2012 projectors?

Hello everyone, I have a Epson 1080ub refurb that I purchaced a year ago for $950 with 2 year warranty (great deal I thought) I also have 3 spare lamps.(long story) It has been a big step up from my previous beamer Epson hc720. (resolution/black level) I am very happy with the 1080ub but I wonder if I am missing out on on newer technology? Would a newer projector ex: JVC hd250 , Mitsubishi hc4000, Benq w6000 be considered an upgrade? From what I have read I understand the the $2500 / $3000 range would be an upgrade. I have the itch to upgrade if the picture quality would justify it. I still smile when I fire up the UB. Humm .The higher end JVC models? Are the really worth the premium price? My wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting to upgrade. Sorry for the rant and thanks as always.

I can comment on the HC4000. I had it for a few weeks and returned it for a refurb 1080ub. In my opinion the 1080 is a better projector.

Thanks for you response, anyone have any comparisons Epson 1080ub to JVC hd250 or benq 6000? or higher end JVC? thanks as always.

From Art's review dating back to 2008:

"The JVC RS1 until just a couple of months ago, has been the generally considered best overall 1080p projector selling for under $10,000. Even with the price drop to $5295, most people will have a hard time justifying the extra $1500+ over the Epson. That said, the JVC, I think, is still the better projector, despite the slightly softer image sharpness. It has a slight advantage in both shadow detail and black levels, and is almost perfect out of the box. I'll still consider it a step of from the Epson, but, the Epson is the better value proposition. Those really into the last ounce or two of performance will still want the JVC, and can easily justify the price difference. The JVC will also appeal to those with larger screens. Ultimately it is still much brighter in best mode than the Epson."

The HD250 is essentially an updated RS1 at 1/2 the price. If movie viewing is your main objective, then you'll be surprise how contrast will impact depth and detail. The RS20 will blow the 1080ub out of the water, but then the price is almost 3x, so it's not fair to compare.

You may also consider the Sony SXRD/LCoS series for movie/sports experience.

I'm sensitive to RBE, so I cannot comment on the BenQ.

On 2nd thought, blow out of the water was too strong. I'm just not a fan of dynamic iris in general but found the high end Sony and later vintage year more acceptable.

I do know folks who are very happy w/ their Epsons and would buy again, e.g. 8700ub, especially if viewing habits cross sports, games and movies.

Thanks for you response. I think I will just stick with the Epson 1080ub until there is a major improvement in projector technology. I already have good blacks, decent convergence, and good contrast. I love reading about the different projector models on this forum. It has to be the best hobby. Thanks and take care everyone.

There are much better projectors out there. I had a Panasonic ae4000 which is ahead of yours and when I got my JVC RS40 last year, it was a major jump. AVS has a sell going on for b stock RS40s. If you are waiting for a major upgrade, it will cost you $10k+. But if you are looking for something that will outperform your current projector, there are many
