Well i tried to play a DVD from my PC that's in the same router as de S390, but couldn't play it. When i go to my wifi router via the BD player it says that there are no media files to play. How are you suppose to do it?

Went through my DVDs and i only got 3 or 4 region 4 that won't play, the rest do play. Strange thing is that i got some region 4 DVDs that DO play.

The bad part is that my Star Wars tilogy collection is region 4, so i won't be able to play it, guess i'll have to sell it and get the Blu Rays (region 1 of course).
FWIW, I recently sold one of my region free insignia players for $40 on ebay. There are probably others just as cheap.

To stream your DVDs you'll need a DLNA server like sony's own HomeStream or similar, and you'll have to rip (decrypt) your DVDs into mkvs or similar. I don't think it's possible for sony to read encrypted VOBs directly from another network share.

That's what i tought, but since there are only a handful of DVds that my S390 can't read, i'll just sell them and get them on Blu Ray. No biggie. Meanwhile i'll try to rip on of those DVD's and burn it as a region 1 DVD.

You'll also have to convert it to NTSC if the disk is PAL.

It's way easier to rip the disk as a mkv file (makemkv)and then use tsmuxer to change the mkv to a m2ts. Won't take long at all. Once you have the m2ts, stick it on a hard drive and connect it to the player or just put the file back on a data DVD ... Or serve it from serviio or homeshare DLNA server. Actually if you use serviio or homeshare and click on enable transcoding you dont even need to convert the mkv to m2ts.

And yes, I turn off the tv speakers when using the bookshelfs and vice versa.

Ok so it turns out my player may not be defective! Serenity is apparently known for having sound/dialogue issues throughout the movie, but particularly in the beginning. Its been a couple of years since I last watched the bluray.

Casino Royale has been harder to confirm, but it seems a few scenes have audible noise pumping from the mics.

I watched "the lookout" last. Night and had no noticed noise issues. So I dunno.

I connected a fat32 western digital external hard drive with a bunch of stuff on it. My Ps3 takes about 8 minutes to load/show all folders. The 390 takes about 1 minute and lags when navigating. It also hard froze one time while browsing folders.
My lg pk950 plasma instantly displays folders and browsing is snappy from both the hard drive and a networked media server computer.

The 390 also supports NTFS file systems. NTFS is generally improved over FAT32 and doesn't have the 4gb file limit. You may get better luck out of NTFS.

Thanks apw2607, well I was able to get it to work once after resetting everything (BD player and SonyInternet/Tv). But only one of my playlist show up and then it disappear after power off (it appears to be back to factory default).

Are you on Slacker Premium plan or free? Maybe its because I'm on free 3 months and it doesn't offer this feature.

I was on the premium free 3 months ... But now I think it's defaulted to the regular free service.

If you reset the player I think you need to add the player back to your account on the sony Internet tv service again ....

I did, even deleted the S590 player from Sony Internet/TV and added it back on and still no go.

I doubled checked and I'm now using the basic service (free). I just added a new channel using slacker on my iPad and it showed up fine on the Sony ..

Have you tried pandora ? Is that working for you?

Hi !

Glad to join this great forum !
Hope someone could help me...

First, Here is my home cinema setup :

2009 50' Samsung Plasma TV + Sony VPL-HW30ES videoprojector.
Yamaha RX-V473 AV receiver + 5.1 Jamo A102 HCS6 speakers
Sony BDP-S590 Blu Ray player.

Issue :
I was able to watch 3D movies, until last week end.
I'm getting now the message "you need a 3D blu ray player and a 3d HDTV to play this disc blablabla....", whereas before i could !

What I did before that issue is :
- upgrade firmware for the AV receiver.
- watched 3D movies from a external HD plugged to the BR player.

I tried to connect directly the BR player to the videoprojector : same issue
When I play 3D movies through the ps3, it works flawlessly.

Even when i try to use the "3D experience" video channel, on the sony BR player interface, i get the same type of error message "...you need a 3D display blablabla..."

All my hdmi cables are 1.4
And it was working before.

Could it come from the videoprojector, not sending anymore the signal "3D capability YES" to the BR player ?

I'm very disappointed, and really dunno what happened to get that.

If anyone has an idea, it could save me.
Otherwise, i have to send it back to Sony for repair.

Thanks
Regards

Pandora, Amazon, NetFlix all working. Even add or change things in these three apps and it show up fine. So I don't what the problem is with Slacker and this player, .

Weel i ripped the first DVD in my computer and changed the zone to 1 and burned it itno a new DVD, and it turned out very well, no loss in quality. That was In The Name of The Father, a great movie.

Still have a couple more movies to rip and transform into Zone 1, one of them being a PAL Zone 2, but i need to get me some double layer DVDs since the movies don't fit into a regular 4.7GB DVD.

Hmm ...

You could try going back to the Sony Internet TV website. Unlink Slacker from your account.

Then re-link it.

^^^ Yes, thats what I have done as well (about 20 times ). Just don't know what else to do. Maybe I should start a new Slacker account but don't think this will solve my issue. Thanks for all your help.

Yea. I actually just created a new account hoping I would get another 3 months free trial ... sadly i didn't

Ah well. I have to say, I like Slacker better than Pandora. Its a bit more flexible and customizable. I like that fact that the seed can be multiple artists or songs ....

Same here, questions do I have to log into Slacker on the PC for S590 Slacker to work? Does it matter if the S590 Slacker is on Wifi instead of wire?

No. You only need to log into slacker on the PC when you originally set it up and link it to the sony bravia tv site ... and go through the authentication.

It shouldn't matter. I am using it on a wired connection fyi.

Beside going into Sony Internet Tv website to enter registration code from S590 and activate/link Slacker. Did you go into Sony Entertainment Network and activate a Home Audio & Video Device as well (with the same registration code?

There are two places for registration for the 590 (and 390/790)

Bravia Internet Video / Sony Essentials / or whatever they are calling it these days ..

This is for many Video/Music services listed other than Sony's own Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. Play Memories (Sony's photo sharing site is suppose to be coming to BD players soon-ish).

In addition to this step, you still need to go through some registration of individual services such as linking premium services (Amazon VOD, Slacker) to the your Sony Essentials account. In addition some services dont require linking, but still need to go through an additional authorization step (e.g HULU+)

https://internet.sony.tv/customer/template/Home.vm

and

Sony Entertainment Network (SEN)

This is for Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited services only.

http://www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/home

You don't have to register for both, unless you plan on using those specific services.

They really need to streamline the registration process. Its very clunky and seems to confuse many people. I did register at both sites, and all services appear to be working ok. I'm certain registering at SEN was not required for Sony Essential services to work correctly.

Yes I know all about computers!

Its my oppinion that Sony is just not thinking things through when writing their code for detecting/utilizing lots of files on external media. The more files you have, the slower Sony products get. FAT32 is oooooolllld. It has no secrets. Again, My TV can utilize external/networked drives with no problem and it can't even handle playing some of the videos on the drive due to the bitrate!

The 4gb limit isn't an issue for me as I use a program that automatically splits files at 4 gigs, without re-encoding. I will eventually take the time to convert my drives to NTFS, but its not a pressing issue.

How big is youre drive, and roughly how many videos, songs, photos, etc do you have on it.

I've being using DLNA, but have a few 1TB/500GB drives lying around. I can load them up and see what the performance is like.

Followup question (since I got no response in the official s580 thread). Is my pcm 5.1 surround? I am trying to understand the technical jargon. Perhaps the pcm is uncompressed 5.1 sound, which is in theory better than dolby digital 5.1 since the latter is compressed. I do see the surround speakers shown in the yamaha receiver on screen display.

Yes, PCM is uncompressed digital audio. However in the case of the amazon vod app, in older releases of 580 firmware, selecting a 5.1 movie would mean that the player will convert the Dolby 5.1 audio to 6 channel PCM internally and then output pcm to your receiver over HDMI. Ensuring you don't have down mix to stereo set.

I believe only the last or last but one firmware release for the 580 added Dolby digital 5.1 bitstream audio out to the amazon vod app.

Hi supersonic78, make sure you chose the HD version and check BD player audio output is set to "Auto" under Audio (HDMI).

you can also display 5.1 Dolby Digital, 7.1 DTS HD etc by going into the menu on your BD player to Sound Settings and select BD Audio Mix Setting to OFF. Then you'll see the actual theatrical sound settings and not PCM.

It is confirmed that MKV files will not play at 24p?
Uncorked my new S390 last night, this is a head scratcher. I bought 3 BD titles off Amazon UK, and they arrived same day:

Twilight Zone 1st Season (All Regions)
Life (w/ David Attenborough, the BBC BD release, Region Free)
Planet Earth Special Edition (w/ David Attenborough, the BBC BD release, Region Free)

Before uncorking the Sony BD player, I emailed Amazon UK because I was concerned that the Twilight Zone set wouldn't play on the Sony. Looking over the package (shrinkwrap intact), I couldn't see anything to give me confirmation. They replied that I should try it and if it didn't work they'd either send me a replacement or refund me, I could keep what I have because returning it would be "prohibitively expensive." OK, I think, and I pop it in the Sony last night, played fine, amazing clarity considering it was 1959ish, I guess they filmed in 32mm.

Well, I pop in the Life disk one because I wanted to see something 16x9 and color and with high probability of being real 1080p quality. It starts up with a warning, which gives way to a 15-20 second slow motion sequence of a few animals (hippos, a flying frog, a mother/offspring baboon), I get a flat blue thing that looks like it's generated by the Sony and it drops to a menu with "Life" selected (the BD disk), and options to go to all manner of online streaming content. If I press the center OK button (with the Life BD selected, which is defaulted) on the remote I get the same opening sequence and it drops to the same menu. I've tried everything including resetting the Sony to factory defaults completely. Same behavior.

Now, this S390 has shaken my confidence in Sony. At first it failed on two counts to accept my wired ethernet connection to my wireless router. I therefore set it up wirelessly, which worked (far less intuitive than the Panasonic 220 I had for a few days a few weeks ago, which I had to return for lack of a subtitle button on the remote). After resetting to factory defaults and in the midst of one of these attempts to fire up the Life disk I was informed that there was a new version of the firmware available. WTF, I hadn't set any internet connection. I poke around and the player updates firmware. It sits for 5 minutes saying don't turn off power whatever you do and it says 1/9 complete. After 5 minutes it finally says 2/9. A minute later the machine turns off, period, no messages, no warning, nothing, it had not indicated that it ever got beyond 2/9! I turn it on, try to see if it's updated and it says "already updated." What version, I'm thinking, and I poke around and indeed the present version is 359, the one it was attempting. I poke around some more and find that the machine is connected by ethernet to my router, which was obvious from having updated the firmware, but I checked anyway (why did it fail to connect when I went to set up the internet connection initially?).

Still no luck with the Life disk. I pop in Planet Earth Special Edition disk one and I get even less. For 2 seconds I see "2 Entertain" and that disappears and I get a blank screen, even after 10 minutes.

Did Amazon UK send me the wrong sets of Life and Planet Earth Special Edition? Is the Sony incapable of playing "Region Free" BDs? Comments, help, suggestions much appreciated.
... for the benefit of others, Muse has a US player.

Muse, for foreign discs, you may want to check out the Insignia in the deals thread. It's $40 today only and has been proven to be region free (after a simple remote hack) and plays UK discs. If you go that route, you'll need to get your hands on the region free firmware for it.

I'm no expert, but I think UK discs are PAL which a US sony cannot play, in spite of the region. Read the box and see if you see NTSC anywhere on it. If not, sony can't play it. Buying foreign discs is very risky unless you really know what you're doing or have a universal player.

Not that this helps, but I have three 390's, none of which had any update or network issues (both wired and wirelss).

I have seen others post that while sony can't play PAL discs, it can play MKVs created from PAL discs. So you may be able to rip your discs and make playable MKVs.
