Official Sony BDP-S590 and BDP-390 Thread - Page 53

post #1561 of 3995
Hi,
I just got this player delivered from oneCall.com. I plugged it in and it seems fine except that it's not playing ANY disc I put it. I've tried, Blu-Ray, Blu-ray 3d, and dvd. Nothing plays. Everything says "Unable to play this Disc. Please check the format and there's no fingerprint or scratches."

Am I missing something blatant?

Thanks!
post #1562 of 3995
Hopefully you're playing commercially made discs with the shiny side down.

If so, what you're missing is a working player. Return it for a replacement or your money back.

I just bought a 590 the other week. I've set it up for color, contrast, etc. using my old Digital Video Essentials DVD, use "Standard" mode with no NR, and updated the firmware (which as I understand it fixes problems with the RGB mode). TV connection is HDMI.

I have a DLP and after using the DVE disk everything looks pretty good (a bit of innacruacy in the red decoding in the TV but otherwise OK) EXCEPT that it looks like I'm getting black crush. I've not noticed this from other inputs so I think it is specific to the BD player. Input settings for the TV are "normal" (not the dreaded "dynamic"

My old DVD player (a Panny) had some initial black crush issues that were pretty easily correctable after a firmware upgrade and by making a small change to one of the "black" settings. I have not found any "black" settings that seem to help so far - maybe I just have not found them yet.

I've only seen one other post that hinted at crush so this does not look like a widespread issue. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks.

I would download and burn a copy of the AVS HD 709 disc and see how the patterns on there compare to the patterns on DVE. I tested RGB to be working correctly for Blu-ray content, I didn't test it for DVD to Blu-ray conversion as I don't have content to test that with. Or I'd buy a copy of Spears and Munsil or Disney's World of Wonder on Blu-ray and use that for setup. Since BD and DVD content is encoded differently, you should really use a Blu-ray disc for this just to avoid another level of potential issues that can arise.

Thanks. I was hoping there was some black adjust setting I had missed but this is probably the best idea - I only used DVE since I had it in hand. It's not a real bad "crush" effect and it's better since using DVE and turning off the various dynamic settings. Maybe finishing the job with Spears and Munsil will do the trick.

I should say that using DVE I could see BTB so I can at least report that DVD played on the 590 does pass BTB. In spite of passing BTB, playing Blu Ray looks slightly crushed.

As an aside - and I apologize if this has been posted already but I did not read all 1500+ posts - is there a code to get to a service menu for the 590?

Thanks.

HELP!! My S590 suddenly stopped playing any windows Media Center recorded TV shows?! Got this unit in June and it has been a great BluRay player. I have an OTA ATSC card in my main PC and have been recording shows as I like. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit is the OS, and it stores all recorded shows in the .mtv format. I've been browsing on the S590 to the Video folder -> Recorded TV folder and there are my shows and I stream them no problem until just a few days ago. When I go to the Recorded TV folder and then say Series folder it shows the series based folders like Dancing With the Stars or (wife's) The Bachelorette, etc, but when I click on any of those folders I get the "No playable file found" error message!!!!?!!?!!?!?!? They are there and play fine on the PC. I also have an older S770 Sony BluRay player and they are visible and playable on that system. Yes I have confirmed Sharing and Streaming options are properly set on the PC and have done complete resets on the s590. Got to Level 7 tech support today and they say can't help me because .mtv file types aren't supported according to DLNA spec sheet. WTF? I said it was working just a few days ago and it works right now on the s770!

OK - so anybody else seeing this? New firmware change on the s590? Fixes? Note I did try to force a new .0430 firmware update but it won't take as it says already there. Tech support says no way to force it to go to a previous firmware version.
post #1567 of 3995
I think you mean wtv files which are actually just MPEG2 which sony has always supported. Just the file extension and a few minor things are different. The latest firmware did indeed break this capability as well as divx playback. I too was bitten by this and haven't found a solution yet. Support is correct that there is no way to go back to the old firmware. If I find a solution, I'll be sure to post it. Hopefully if enough of us complain, they'll fix it.

Has anyone had problems opening Netflix or Vudu today ? When I press on their respective icons with the remote nothing happens. When I use the Netflix button on the remote it displays "Feature not available". Restarted the unit several times, even unplugged it and plugged it back in - no change. I'm on the latest firmware.
post #1569 of 3995
Stinger - I just ran into this problem 5 minutes ago. The Vudu and Netflix icons are unresponsive on my BDP-S590. Amazon Instant loads up fine, but I'm not paying for my Battlestar Galactica! We watched some Netflix today at lunchtime, no problems. Very curious to find out whats going on. My firmware is also up to date. I've restarted my Blu Ray player a couple times.
post #1570 of 3995
I am having the same problem Netflix App will not work along with other Apps does anyone know whats going on?
post #1571 of 3995
Just found that SEN displays same message - "Feature not available".

Yes, the firmware update messed you up. Some here have suggested trying a different DLNA media server software package, and that maybe that might work. In my experience Serviio no longer plays any AVI files ( regardless of the format within the container) that it previously played great. Some are suggesting that the unit could still play these files but it is being picky about the exact MIME type info being sent to the unit by the DLNA server, but if you can't get it to work then that is not reassuring. You can try PS3 Media server - look back at tmeader's posts.

If you bought this in late June and you can still return the unit, then that is your best bet by far. That will reset you to the stock firmware. If you want to update from stock to the previous version (before the bad update) you can google search M12.R.0369 (the prior working firmware) and download it from the Sony UK site, then update your unit via the CD tray

Sony really messed up what was easily the best media streamer, with this update.

Divx playback isn't broken. You just need to use a DLNA server that sends the proper MIME info to the player now. Please see my earlier posts on PMS.

Thanks. I read your post, and have done similar mods to the profile in serviio without success. Can you please confirm whether you have a US player?

D@mn Sony!! Thanks for letting me know it was the firmware update. I'm calling back in - ask for level 7 Tech Support in San Diego. I just tried MediaPortal and besides having difficulty getting the EPG to load, it did not work with the new s590 firmware. I just downloaded a copy of the prior f/w - hope it loads. Thanks again.

I do too. But I've never been able to load an earlier f/w on a sony. Let us know if it works.

Yes, I'm in the US. US player. Not sure what the problem is with Serviio. Any reason you can't give PMS a shot?

I was watching Netflix earlier today and now I have the same exact problem. Amazon and Youtube work, but Netflix doesn't do anything when I try it from xmb and if I use the netflix button itself I get the same message you get.

Anyone know what the deal is here?

Netflix works fine from my ps3 or from my laptop.
post #1579 of 3995
Netflix isn't working on my 590 with latest FW either. Tells me "Feature not available." Netflix has been working great with the new FW until tonight.
post #1580 of 3995
For all those who installed FW update and are having problems with serviio (no AVI playback):

This line in the profile for Sony BDP is causing the problem:
Code:
<MediaFormatProfile name="MPEG_PS_PAL,MPEG_PS_NTSC" mime-type="video/mpeg">AVI</MediaFormatProfile>

Remove this line, and replace it with following:
Code:
<MediaFormatProfile  mime-type="video/avi">AVI</MediaFormatProfile>

And voila, AVIs are working again. S590 is capable of playing video/avi MIME type, and this is a correct MIME type for AVI files. The previosly used conversion was done for old sony BDPs which couldn't understand video/avi.

You can also use
Code:
<MediaFormatProfile  mime-type="video/x-xvid">AVI</MediaFormatProfile>

With the same results, as video/x-xvid is also supported.

Of course, player would still not play DIVX-encoded files, only XVID-encoded ones. To solve this problem, you need to transcode DIVX. For this, find the following section in the BDP profile:
Code:
<Video targetACodec="ac3" targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video">
<Matches container="asf"/>
<Matches container="flv"/>
<Matches container="ogg"/>
<Matches container="avi" vCodec="dvvideo"/>
<!-- digital camera video formats -->
 <Matches container="avi" vCodec="mjpeg"/>
<Matches container="mp4" vCodec="mjpeg"/> </Video>

and replace it with following:
Code:
<Video targetACodec="ac3" targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video">
<Matches container="flv"/>
<Matches container="ogg"/>
<Matches container="avi" />
<Matches container="mp4" vCodec="mjpeg"/> </Video>

It will transcode all AVI though. So, only use it if you have lots of DIVX-encoded files. Otherwise, it might be more effective just to change the FOURCC codes of those files to those corresponding to XVID encoder. Sony is really checking FOURCC codes, and if it's those of DIVX - it will not play. No way to fool it with mime type.

By the way, did you notice that I removed the "asf" transcode as well? That's because S590 would play WMV natively, no transcode is required. The transcode was required for older players only...

Anyway, with that changes you should be able now to play all the AVI and WMV files.

And for MKV, find following section:
Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts">
<Matches container="matroska"/>
<!-- remux mp4 container files to mpeg-ts to allow seeking -->
<!-- this also fixes the renderer's jerky playback of mov container files such as iPhone 4 HD video recordings -->
 <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264"/>
<Matches container="avi" vCodec="h264"/> </Video>

And replace it with:
Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts">
 <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264"/>
<Matches container="avi" vCodec="h264"/> </Video>

Now search for:
Code:
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/divx">MATROSKA</MediaFormatProfile>

and remove this line. S590 would then play MKVs natively as video/x-matroska MIME type...

Hope this helps one or another frustrated owner ;-)

Not working here either - but no error message. It just doesn't load the app. Found reports elsewhere that their web site, while working now, was having problems earlier as well - so it would appear to be a problem on Netflix's end that will hopefully be fixed soon.

I never bothered setting up any of the other services, and Sony's web site doesn't seem to be working properly for registration, so I can't get my Amazon stuff to work right now either frown.gif So I'm stuck with Crackle for now.

Could someone please answer my question about Divx files and this player? I'm not specifically asking about DLNA either.

Here is what I'm wanting to know

Like i've stated before I don't regularly use Divx as a video format, however I did want to experiment with some video files.

I use FFMpeg for most of my video conversion. When I deal with AVI files, I encode to XVid for video, and AC3 for audio.

The player will play these files with no problem on streaming/Local storage such as USB.

When I tried a Divx encoded avi, the player said unsupported, and this was from USB. When I encoded the same file with the official Divx converter, the player still said unsupported from USB.

When the divx converter produces a file, it gives the file an extension of .divx.

The only reason I was messing with divx at all was, I owned a panasonic DMP-BD85 which is an official Divx Certified device that can support Divx VOD, commercial divx and was converting a few files to be interchangeable between multiple players as the panasonic players at that time, didn't support H.264, and the other more commonly used formats. Now that the Panasonic is gone, I don't need to use Avi, or divx files, anymore, however, since this new sony is supposed to play them, i wanted to see how it did.

P.S. I had this issue on the stock firmware too, of Divx specific files not playing at all. I usually test locally because streaming until the latest sony players has been very limited. Doing things locally has always given me more accurate results when testing natively supported formats.

Thank you.

On another positive note, this player, has played all my DVD-R and +R discs recorded from my sanyo, and pioneer recorders when I had satellite, very nicely smile.gif
The sanyo was used to copy VHS copies to DVD+R then it died, and i exchanged it for the pioner which still is around and works today, but very much useless for tv direct recordings since it has an analog tuner, but still can use the video inputs for SD e.g from a sat or cable box.

I'm having the same issues. No error message, Netflix just stopped loading. This just started today. Worked fine last night.

Same here I noticed netflix wasn't working. I just tested it since people were expressing that they were having issues. I should test netflix from my 570 to see if it's broken there too. This will say if it's a netflix specific or sony issue since the interfaces are different between the two players.

UPDATE: I just tested the older netflix interface from ny BDP-S570 with the latest firmware for that model, and the interface loaded fine, and the title i selected started to stream fine. Seems like this is related to the newer netflix interface. Hope this helps.

Also having an issue with Netflix not working. I've reset to factory default settings and this doesn't help. I don't understand that. If it actually did what it says why would the newest firmware be an issue. I take it it is not reverting back to the previous firmware? Pretty ticked off about this as Netflix streaming is one of the main reason I bought this thing.

Edit: talked to an online sony rep and they're at least aware of it:

8:50 AM Janice - (C2L3):
Yes, we are aware of this being an issue and I suggest that you access netflix later in the BD Player as our engineers are working on it.
8:51 AM Customer:
Ok is there any eta on a fix do you know?
8:52 AM Janice - (C2L3):
No, you can accees it few hours later.
8:52 AM Janice - (C2L3):
access*
8:52 AM Customer:
You mean I should be able to access it in a few hours?
8:53 AM Janice - (C2L3):
Yes.
8:53 AM Customer:
Ok thanks for the info

I am having the Netflix issue as well. It worked last night but today it just isn't responding at all, no error message, just nothing whether I use the XMB or the dedicated button. I've also noticed that VUDU doesn't work either for me, is this true for anyone else? It seems I can access everything except for those two services. Which sucks because I bought this thing yesterday specifically to stream Netflix. I'm bumming.
post #1587 of 3995
Well at least your chat representative knew what was up. Mine kept insisting that I power cycle (though I already had) and then when that didn't work he said he couldn't help me and that I should call Sony. As this is my day off (and there is a new season of Breaking Bad on streaming) I am very bummed.
post #1588 of 3995
I just checked and VUDU is also not loading for me either.
post #1589 of 3995
Having the same problem....literally just got my S590 yesterday, hooked it up, it asked if I wanted to update FW so I did it, and everything works on it except for Netflix and VUDU. I tried to call Sony last night but got tired of waiting on the phone. I have a feeling it had to do with the FW, so hopefully there is a fix soon.

Hi there,

Sony S590 does not support DIVX. Period. Doesn't matter whether on USB or DLNA. It's an artificaially created incompatibility. From the HW/SW point of view, it should be perfectly capable of playing DIVX. But, Sony wanted to save some money on licensing, so the implemented a check in the player: if the FourCC of the file is indicating it's DIVX, it will throw an error and wouldn't play. You can easily work around this problem by changing the FourCC code to XVID, google for a free tool to change FourCCs. So, it's not the name of the file, not MIME type on DLNA, it's just FourCC which is being checked. You can not solve the problem by simply renaming the file.
