I am using the digital optical audio out, though, because my old receiver doesn't have HDMI ports. But, it shouldn't matter because the Roku is on digital optical audio, too, and it plays everything in surround sound.

To the best of my knowledge, Pandora does not output a surround signal, I believe it is a 2.0 stereo service. You are likely getting simulated surround from Pandora on your Roku using a matrix surround simulation from your AVR such as Dolby Pro-Logic IIx. There is likely a button on the remote of your receiver that allows you to toggle between different surround modes, this setting might be automatically recalled based on the input you choose.
Ditto what vamp said. Your receiver should be creating the surround (Dolby Pro Logic, etc) since Pandora is only stereo.

But what about the content not playing in surround sound from the USB flash drive? I know I have downloaded stuff in 6 channel surround sound.
As for the USB drive, what format is the audio? (DTS, etc).

Not sure, but the multi-channel stuff on the Roku plays in surround and it's not "simulated". You can clearly hear all the distinct channels. I downloaded "Prometheus" and it definitely has 6 channel surround, but only plays on the front speakers with the Sony player.

There is a option in the audio settings to create a 7 channel mix out of 2 channels with DTS neo 6 music or cinema mode. The player outputs this as a multi channel PCM But it's over HDMI.

its a nice feature should your receiver not have Neo 6

USB drive works fine for me. Just tested a MKV that contains three different audio tracks: DTS-HD, DD 5.1 and AAC stereo. All of them work. You can switch audio tracks using the Audio button on remote.

OP needs to understand what kind of video files he has and what audio tracks are on those files and which track is set as default track on those files. Sounds like the files he tried has 2-ch track set as default.

To be absolutely clear, there is no surround mix on any Pandora app period. Whether it be Roku, or Sony or Panasonic. You can make a simulated surround out of 2 channel (with DTS Neo or Dolby Pro logic II), but thats it.

As far as "i downloaded Prometheus" ... and it has 6 channel surround. Not sure where it came from or the source, but hitting the info/display button on the remote will tell you what audio track its playing for the file. Hitting audio allows you to toggle through available audio tracks in the file ... if they are available.

I just picked up my S590 today at Target. Gonna set it up tomorrow and give my thoughts then. I have high hopes for this player and see if it holds up next to my old S570. Sure hope it does.

Will be interesting to know your comparison. I had S570 briefly before. IIRC, S570 boots up faster than my S590. Comes with 1GB on-board BDLive storage that S590 lacks. But S590 beats S570 soundly in DLNA streaming.

I aint worried about the 1GB on board BDLive storage because I rarely if ever used BDLive anyway and the boot up time's between the player's aint that much of a difference from what I have read. But I am gonna go set it up and give my thoughts.

Ok I set it all up and watched my first Blu ray on it (I Am Legend) and here is my thoughts on the S590. First setup was a breeze, it found my wifi easy. I was pleasantly surprised to see Vudu my favorite streaming site on there plus other app's that werent on my S570. I tried out the Internet Browser and it worked! Pulled up a bunch of sites so I am happy there. Last time I used a feature like that was on the PS3 my freind loaned me. Will I use it? More then likely not. Now onto playing my first movie on it. The PQ is superb if you ask me and the load time isnt really as fast as my S570 but its not a major deal to me. Audio? I really cant say because I run Audio through my Samsung Soundbar which dont deliever that full surround sound experience that I enjoy so I really cant comment on the audio until I get an AVR next month. That all being said was the S590 worth it and is it a good Blu ray player? Yep it was worth it and in my book its a damn good player. Glad I bought it.

FWIW, I own both a 570 and a 590. Bought the 590 mainly for Netflix 1080p/5.1 streaming. Also for Netflix, the UI and search functions are very different between the 570 and 590. I greatly prefer the 570 in this regard but I've heard both sides of that argument. Haven't really eperienced any issues playing BDs. I also enjoy streamng VUDU, Pandora, Qello and the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall. Had a nice experience playing a Sam Cooke CD the other night on my 590. Haven't yet gotten around to SACD, even though I own Dark Side of the Moon in that format. I love how the player goes out to Gracenote to pull down and display album art. All work great. Good luck!

P.S. I think my 570 has VUDU as well.

FWIW, I have that SACD too and listened to it to compare my new setup in my sig compared to my previous Onkyo HTIB hookup using SACD player with analog connections. I was blown away how good it sounded.

I don't use BDLive either but in the past, some titles are known to lock up when there is no BDLive storage available.

I just picked up a BDP-590 today at Target, and so far I like a lot better than my 3 year old Panny BD-75 which bit the dust after I downloaded Panasonics latest firmware. After being on the phone with Panasonic customer support for an hour, they insisted I send in the unit and pay for repairs. I'll never buy another Panny.

Netflix looks a lot better in 1080P and sounds great in 5.1. I'm looking forward to using it with other apps. I'm glad this unit has both optical and digital audio outputs. My Onkyo receiver has only 2 optical and 1 coaxial input.
2 of the opticals are used already, so I was able to connect the Sony to the coaxial input.

Can I stream pics from a NAS to my S390? I have my pics stored on a Drobo drive. I'm wondering if I can view them on the TV connected to my '390.

thanks

Yes. You need to run a DLNA server. You can do one of two things.

1) run the DLNA server on the drobo direct. Media tomb will run on drobo . More info here http://drobo.jhah.net/apps/mediatomb/start

2) run the DLNA server on your PC/Mac and point the dlna photo share to your drobo where your photos are located. Serviio is a very good DLNA server for Sony devices and will work on Mac, windows and Linux os. The following guide provided by drobo explains how to set up Serviio and use it with a Xbox 360. The drobo and pc setup is the same for the 390.

http://www.drobo.com/downloads/how-to/HT-0031-00_stream_media_serviio_xbox_pc.pdf

The photo share will appear under the photos heading in the XMB on the s390.

Once you have photos working you can try music and video too.

Good luck.

Topic: Picture Quality

I have had the 590 for a few months and the only thing I haven't fallen in love with is the PQ. They say all players are identical these days as for PQ but my PS3 seemed much better, particularly with blacks. I never tweaked any settings on my tv so perhaps it's just tv settings. I really saw no reason why it couldn't be plug and play after replacing PS3. Anyone else notice a slight reduction in PQ after PS3 and anyone have any tweaks?

Well if the 590 is on a different TV input then I would think the settings do have to be changed.
I curious though, why get a BD player when you have the PS3?

Is it just coloration that is your concern, or do you have other concerns? It may help to be more specific. What kind of content are you having quality concerns with? Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix?

I would recommend picking up a Blu-ray calibration disc such as Disney WOW or Spears and Munsil to optimize your display. This will help optimize color, make sure overscan is turned off, etc,

Probably a configuration issue with your TV. If I'd guess, you have your PS3 set to RGB full range and but your S590 set to default limited range. God knows what you have set your TV at (default should be limited range). Any mis-match between TV and player (PS3 or BD player) will result in incorrect color rendering one way or another. With color space matched and TV properly calibrated, I'd seriously doubt you will see any difference in PQ.

I have a BDP-s590 and a Synology NAS hardwired. On the NAS I am running the Plex app, and when I play a video, the quality is awful. It says that the file is 1080p, but it looks like SD. When I use the Plex Media Server connection, the file plays fine.

I've also hooked up the NAS to my smart TV, and plex works just fine on there. Is there some setting that I'm missing on the Blu-Ray player?

Plex uses profiles to work with certain players. Check on the plex forum as many folks have new profiles for the 2012 Sony bluray players. I think your plex server has a old profile or isn't using a Sony configured one.

I am going to say that after a few days of owning the S590 it has been a good investment. Watching Blu rays, streaming movies ect has been great and I have nothing but praise for the S590. It has been an excellent replacement for my S570 which in itself was an outstanding player from Sony. I will go on record saying that Sony has made some of the best Blu ray players on the market next to Oppo.

I agree. Replaced a Samsung with a S590.

Hey guys, first time poster, with a really weird problem. I've browsed this thread a ton but I haven't seen any specific incidents like this, so I hope it's okay to ask.

I have a BDP-S390. As of 3-4 days ago, I could browse to my PC's shared videos folder, and play every single video there. MPEG, DivX, Matroska, AVI, you name it. No real problems. The player's been great.

Suddenly, as of this afternoon, things have gone all wonky. I would browse to the folder, and it would suddenly NOT show some of the videos it used to. After looking, it seems like the movies that don't show up are all DivX/Matroska, while AVI and MPEG still show up. I've seen a lot of posts mentioning firmware updates that suddenly change what formats the player will recognize.... But as far as I know, our player is set to NOTIFY when there are firmware updates, and we haven't had one since we bought the player!

If I navigate to a folder with ONLY DivX/Matroska files, it gives me the dreaded "there are no playable files." If I navigate to a folder with a bunch of files, it will only show MPEGs and AVIs.

I would just chalk this up to the player, and look to find some sort of streaming NDLA software, if it weren't for the fact it worked perfectly a few days ago! Help! mad.gif

Before we get to far along can you post whether a EU, USA, Canada or some other region player, the firmware version the player has installed and what DLNA server you are using.
