Official Sony BDP-S590 and BDP-390 Thread - Page 101

So I just picked up a s590 last night. Awesome so far! I was using the 2010 Sony models before and that was nice but lacked NTFS, solid Netflix, etc.

ANYWHO, I have my Blu-Ray rips play via M2TS files working great via NTFS -- Awesome! That being said, I was wondering if anyone had figured out either one of these issues:

1 - I ripped a Blu-Ray with menu, etc intact and put it on a USB drive. I tried playing the drive altogether or launching a menu but nothing happened. Is there anyway to play a Blu-Ray or DVD with full menus via USB?

2 - I tried a bunch of .MKV files on USB but none of them worked. I only am interested in lossless 1080p and HD audio. I really would like to be able to play MKVs with chapters if I can't get the full folder structure working.

Any help is appreciated!

Here is the link from Sony's site that you can play full folder structures:

Found the config folder and looked at the profile settings under Sony Blu-Ray players. In the section for video transcoding where targetContainer = mpeg2ts I added the additional entry: , and IT WORKED, using Homestream will now allow my s590 with latest .0430 firmware to play back my Windows Media Center recorded OTA TV shows which it encapsulates the MPEG2 video into a .wtv container. So I can now resume playing back my recorded TV shows on my s590!! Thanks all!

daggerNC, Thanks for this, it worked great, only I didn't see the target container mpeg2ts, so I added your line here

Thanks again!

Is there ANY DLNA streaming apps for Windows that will allow MKV streaming to my S590?

There are many ways to do it in Windows 7. I simply installed DIVX codec pack from DIVX labs and it will allow Windows 7's built in DLNA server to stream mkv. There are also various splitters and codec packs you can use to enable mkv streaming.

1. I don't think it will work.
2. this player can play mkv if the video is H.264/AVC and audio is not Dolby TrueHD. For VC-1 and MPEG2 video, you can only play them in m2ts format. There is no way to play Dobly TrueHD audio IIRC. DTS-HD MA is not a problem.

Luckily, most BD discs today are AVC and DTS-HD MA. I simply rip them to PC and streaming directly to the player.

Can the s590 handle any video files with chapters? If I hit "next" it just plays the next video file, not go to the next chapter even in an MKV I have working..

Is there a way to get the TrueHD to PCM or any other uncompressed format? My Blu collection is mixed. Some TrueHD and some DTS-HD. This Blu-Ray player rocks but trying to find the best way to present my ripped Blu-Rays lossless is a bit of a pain. I know XBMC handles it all but I wanted my BD, Netflix and digital files all contained in one unit smile.gif

TrueHd is not supported either bitstream or converted to PCM.

MKV with chapters is supported. However the only MKV the sony players will support native is H264/avc/mpeg. 4

Stupid question of the day: I recently bought the 590 but won't start using it until May. Does it have the ability to watch Ultraviolet movies? Does any Blu-Ray player? I've tried searching and can't really find anything. When I try to "add a player" on the UV site it says that the players are "coming soon" so I'm assuming that this is a new capability not found anywhere yet? Thanks for the help.
IIRC, current firmware doesn't include this functionality. Sony could add this any time via a firmware upgrade but I highly doubt it. UltraViolet is useful for mobile usages like phone or tablet. There is zero value for a stationary player when you can either pop in the disc or easily rip to you PC, IMO.

I have been using Serviio on Windows 8 and I set the Serviio profile for my s590 to "Sony Bravia TV (2012)" and I can stream mkv files to the player. You need to use this profile or the player sees the mkv file as unplayable. I don't get any DVD/Blu-Ray menus but I get the main movie.

One way of redeeming a UV copy of a movie is with VUDU; if you did it that way you can play them in the S590's VUDU player (and VUDU players on a ton of other devices).

Question above on BD rip menus supported. No. Not supported. You'll need to go for a specialist dedicated home network streamer for that. Pre 2013 Dune HD player .... Dune HD D1 or something like that.

This may have been asked, but I tried a few different search strings and didn't find anything. This is a HUGE thread....

Is the 790 worth the extra $150 over the 590 if all I am going to use it for is to play DVD's/Blu Rays/3D Blu Rays? I do not need it for really anything but that. I have an AVR that has Airplay and a Samsung 8000 series TV to handle my Netflix.

Any insight would be great.

Thank you,
Tim

The 790 is a tad faster at loading disks and one could argue that since there are more video processing options DVDs look better up scaled. Build quality is a bit better and you get SBM technology too.

Is it worth it ?? For you, dunno.

The 590 gets replaced in about a week with the s5100 btw.

Fail on my part, I just bought the S590 today. I guess I can return it for the S5100. Is it suppose to be "better"?

Just picked up my S590 yesterday, and I've got two issues that I can't solve and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions:
1) I've got my USB drive plugged and playing movies from it works great. But I can't access it over my network the way I could with my WD TV Live. Is there a way to do this?
2) There are way too many services listed under video and music. Is there a way to remove some of them?

Thanks!

For the S590 to be able to see the USB drive, it needs to be connected to a media server. You have a couple of options:
1) Use Windows Media Player to set-up a media server and that will pass the files onto your player.
2) You can replace your USB drive with a network hard drive (i.e WD My Book Live), with the files copied onto it, that has a built-in media server and connect that to your network.
3) Get a router that has a built in media-server (Linksys EA4500 & EA6500 are two that have this).

Some drawbacks to the above are:
1) You will need to have the PC acting as a server aslo powered on, and I think WMP will only show files compatible with WMP, regardless if the S590 can play them or not (there may be a workaround another member can help out with).
2 & 3) The 2TB WD My Book Live will run you about $130 and the router option will be ~ $150+ since it's mainly an option on premium grade routers. So this is not the cheapest option.

I was in the same boat and went with the WD Live 2TB drive. It works for streaming pics and movies to the player as well as gives me the option of viewing/backing up my pics and videos from my PC and iPad (via the WD Pic2Go app). If you're going to stream movies through the network, I would highly recommend hardwiring your S590 to your network, otherwise it will get choppy (esp. since the S590 deosn't support 5Ghz wireless).

Nope, the menu doesn't allow you to add or remove the services/apps listed.

Setup Servio on your computer as a DLNA server. Use the Sony Bravia 2012 profile, as it has the settings that most closely match this bluray player.

Free, and works great. Windows Media Player is severely crippled as a DLNA server.

How does resume work? Is it controlled by the server? Also, in the manual I don't see any way to jump to a certain time in playback via DLNA. For example, if resume doesn't work is there any way to jump 20 minutes into the video? Thanks.

Speaking of the new models for 2013, is the S5100 going to be a worthwhile upgrade for someone who strictly watches discs, and streams from a few select services such as Netflix, Amazon VOD, and Vudu? and ocasionally uses DLNA ? I only ask, as the 590 meets all my current needs, so i wasn't going to consider an upgrade unless these units die, or the new units wil be offering some kind of new feature that is absolutely necessary to continue the current tasks I mentioned in my question. I'm guessing it's not something i'll be forced to upgrade to for support as my 570 still works fine for everything other then lacking vudu, and good dlna support. The 590 fills those holes. That's why i was asking. The other reason, i was asking is, for now. I'm stuck with optical for digital output right now. I keep hearing the new players continue to take away the old outputs one model at a time. So will sony's 2013 line do away with optical ?

Thanks, could use so feedback here.

You can use the SEN portal, and pick 8 favorites ... across Video or music apps, or Opera TV apps.

Resume will work for a particular file if

1) the player isn't turned off
2) the user doesn't try and play another file.

You can't jump to a specific time.

I've gone through the specs and right now I can tell you DLNA remains unchanged from 2012. As far as service changes, boot times and overall usability ... we will have to wait and see. The 5100 has optical.

In my limited experience with it, yes it does.

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on the thread and see. I'm the kind of person who doesn't always jump on the latest if i don't have to, or even can always do so financially. So since my current hardware meets my needs, i'll just wait and see what others might say who have similar usage patterns as me.

Also i like the eye candy user interfaces of the LG, the Panasonic, and the Samsung players, but in doing research, those players seem to also be more unstable then the sony players and people don't rate them as well. currently my S570, and S590 units give me zero problems though a few times the S570 has shown it's age a few times, but not bad enough to retire yet.

DaggerNC and/or Toad385,

I'm not able to see the actual line of code you put into the profile. Could you elaborate for me please?

Thanks!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I've got a WNDR 3700 router that has a DLNA server in it. I had used it with my WD TV Live before and it really seemed to slow down the router and I had to reboot it quite often. I'll give it another go. Too bad this isn't something built into the S590.

Someone else recommended using the Favorites in the SEN section. Maybe I'll give that a try. I think I wouldn't mind the gigantic list you can't change if it weren't for so many of them being something you have to pay extra for. It reminds me of the crapware that comes loaded on so many PCs these days.

Thanks again for the quick reply and the great suggestions.

Yes if you are playing a M2TS rather than MKV.

I have had the BDP-S590 for a couple months and it seems to have an odd bug with the subtitles on DVDs. When playing the Flight DVD, I'll reverse and turn on the English subtitles to catch some soft-spoken dialog, then turn the subtitles off, but then when there is some English text onscreen, like when Denzel's character has a package with "Veal" written on it, or the crop-duster sign appears, I get Spanish subtitles translating the English text. I eject the disc, start the disc fresh, no Spanish subtitles at those points, turn the English subtitles on and then off and get Spanish subtitles at those same spots. This has happened with other DVDs as well, I've checked the player's settings and nothing seems to be wrong, so not sure why it's doing this.
