Not really much of a workflow; everything is pretty intuitive.

I use MKVMerge / MMG :
- Start MMG;
- In Muxing / Add Command Line Options make sure "--engage no_cue_duration --engage no_cue_relative_position" are selected and set as default;
- Add the MKV file and the SRT file you are merging;
- Change General Track Options if necessary (I usually set subtitles to Language = Eng, Default Flag = No, Forced Flag = No or whatever is appropriate);
- Change Format Specific Options if necessary (for example, set delay for subtitles if not synced properly);
- Select an appropriate output filename;
- Start muxing.

PSG subtitle ripped from BD disc worked for me once in the past when I was using certain versions of Shark007 codec pack. I can no longer make it work on this player. Now I switched over to 5100 and the player will simply tell me that it is not supported whenever I press subtitle button while playing mkv files either streamed or local USB.

I suspect when it worked in the past, one of the subtitle processor in the codec pack renders it into the video for me on the PC side before stream out.

For Carlos, Sony player also plays DTS-HD MA audio tracks in the mkv. That's what I kept my player for. Everything else is not important to me.

Ah I see. Sorry for some reason I just thought it was during the ripping process in makemkv. I see you remux the file with the external subtitle file.

I no longer have my 590, but did the new youtube app appear on this player today? It just appeared on the 790. Very nice.

On my 590, there are now two YouTube apps. After installing the update, only the old app was present, but after launching the old app, a new app named 'New YouTube for TV' appeared in the list below the old app.

LOVE the new app! All the registration happens online, so no need to log in with the atrocious numeric keypad based IR remote text entry any more. And it integrates beautifully with the YouTube iPhone app (just browse to content on the phone, then play on TV via the 590, very simple). Of course it's in HD now too!

I'm not seeing the new app, only the old one with improved PQ. Still doesn't quite look HD on the my big screen. Are you seeing something different on the 390?
post #3491 of 3993
Regarding the new youtube app, if it doesn't appear after the firmware update, you may need to refresh the list of services.

Also if you have a mobile device with the youtube app installed you can search on the device and link to the bdp so you can play videos on the tv from the mobile phone.
post #3492 of 3993
How do you refresh the list?

there are two ways, select a service and hit options on the remote, then select update.

also if there are updates there is an icon in the list that indicates an update for services. I got that icon a day or so after the firmware update.

My apologies if this is an issue already addressed - I could not find anything about this after running some thread searches

I have the 590 and have had it for some time. I'm having some audio problems when playing through my TV speakers (i.e. stereo only, no surround). The room with this player is not the same room that I have my stereo in so I'm just using HDMI to my Samsung DLP. When there is a soft sound being played - I've noticed this most playing Walking Dead Blue Rays where there are a lot of scenes with light wind through the trees or crickets etc. - the sound drops out as if there was a problem with the noise reduction. I've played around with the audio menu settings generally but without success. I don't see any NR settings at all for Blu Ray audio. I have no audio problems (or other problems) otherwise. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

There is generally no need for 'noise reduction' on digital audio playback equipment. However, you might try changing the 'Audio DRC' (Dynamic Range Control) setting.

I'm not seeing any new YouTube player after the firmware update on my 390 either; maybe the 390's not getting it. Anyone with a 390 get a new HD-capable YouTube player?
post #3497 of 3993
Got the new firmware update on the 590 and noticed the new YouTube app. Is there a sure way to tell if I am getting HD quality or not on it?

By looking at your tv.

Got the new YouTube player in my S590 too. For the most part, the layout is much like how you see on your computer or phone when you visit the page.

I think the poster meant you will be able to tell the difference by looking at the video.

Static - low resolution.
Clean - most likely HD.

Understood...I was just wondering if perhaps there was something on the interface that indicated it was HD or not.

The specs for the new update don't mention the new Youtube app but I totally have a new Youtube app right below the old one. The new app has a lot more features but requires a lot more scrolling and the 720p clip I tested, not one iota of difference between the new and old app. But what I really wish Youtube would get rid of is that "block blu ray players/Smartphone" thing. Back when the S590 came out, I did not understand why I couldn't pull up some of my Youtube videos, or why so many other videos I have listed as favorites on the website wouldn't show up. I then found out it was because a lot of 3rd party videos when uploaded block blu ray players and smartphones by default and it can't be disabled. The logic isn't logical but rather than getting into a big rant about silly copyright laws.. here are the firmware specs..

And am I the only one who thinks its odd they jumped from 0430 to 0491? Weird jump...

I am curious...has anyone's Netflix app updated?

My girlfriends Netflix changed on her 590...she now has 'super HD' listed instead of HD and her star ratings are yellow instead of red. I tried everything I knew to get my player to update to it but I had no luck. Any ideas?

I am also on the 590
post #3504 of 3993
Youve got to be kidding me. The other day it was doing a update (s590) and I accidently shut that off by pressing wrong button when the screen read "absolutely do not turn off the player during this update). Now I'm stuck with normal hd on netflix. (Everything seems to work fine though)

Is there any way to manually update netfkix again on s590. I'm guessing super hr means better picture and sound especially. And I am getting my sierra 170se's tmr.

What's your girlfriend's network provider? Is it different from your own? You won't see Super HD in the UI unless your provider is set up to access Netflix's Open Connect Content Delivery Network. You can test that by going to this page; if you can get the Super HD video encodes it will tell you that under the picture of a television. (As I write this the page seems to be broken; there no message in big letters under the TV. There should be one in green if Super HD is available, red if not. Maybe it will be fixed when you try it).

You could also check the Netflix UI version on your player and compare it to her's. You can get that information by hitting the remote key sequence UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT UP UP UP UP while in the Netflix player. I posted some version information from various Netflix playing devices that I own in here. The last time I looked at the version running on my S390 (on the 20th) it was the same as posted there except that the UI build version had changed from "API.Next2_2013_03_11-202-p" to "API.Next2_2013_03_11-13-p". (EDIT: I just checked and it's "API.Next2_2013_03_11-15-p" now; I didn't notice any difference between "-202-p", "-13-p" and "-15-p").

I called netflix and they said that it depends on 3 things.

Network provider
Netflix player capability

What netflix player does she have? Is it s590?

Super HD only affects the picture. The "normal" HD video encodes are 720p at 2350- and 3000 Kbps and 1080p at 3850 Kbps; the "Super HD" adds 1080p video encodes at 4300- and 5800 Kpbs.

And also you need atleast 5mbs connection.

Maybe a bit more; in general you need about 120% the average stream bit rate to stay ahead of it, so for the lower bit rate "Super HD" video encode, (4300 Kbps + 384 Kbps (DD+ 5.1 sound)) x 1.2 = 5620 Kbps. The higher bit rate Super HD encode is 5800 Kbps + 384 Kbps * 1.2 = 7420 Kbps. Note that this is bandwidth available on your connections to Netflix's servers and not the nominal speed of your network service which may be two different things.
post #3510 of 3993
On 590, it is limited to 4300kbps max for some reason. It is still Super HD but will not go up to 5800kbps rate.
