Precisely. These are not LAN media players, they're BDPs with LAN media playing convenience functions. There are plenty of products on the market which specialize in media file playback.

Of course there are specialized players out there that cost 3 times as much. My point is that since the wide codec playback capabilities are already there for these players then why wouldn't they do these minor tweaks to make them a little more useable and have it all in one box? I guess they have the same opinion as you guys where DLNA was just thrown in there for marketing but they don't expect anyone to really use it and to buy one of these expensive specialized players instead. I could live without the video thumbnails (but the generic video placeholder is already there so why not just show the thumbnail like they do for photos?), however, they really need to do something about resume especially since FF and REW are the only ways to get around during playback.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I couldn't care less if I don't have a movie poster or album art against a file or track. The main thing is that the file plays back correctly. I owned a Dune Smart D1. It had all the eye candy ... However I still preferred to watch the DLNA served movie on my sony bdp-s790 as I thought the picture looks better.

Resume works so long as you don't try playing another track or switching the player off. Perhaps not ideal but workable.

Btw a dune tv-102 costs just over $100 .... That's on par with the price of a bdp-s5100 and more than 1/2 the price of a bdp-s790. With zappiti you can go at it for eye candy.

Hi guys,

I have had this issue of a pink bar flashing across the top of my TV while playing blu rays. It only happens with blu rays, and there also appears to be no pattern of exacly when it happens. Sometimes a whole movie will make it through with nothing, others will be riddled with pink bars throughout. I have tried swapping HDMIs, but to no avail. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, here is my setup and a video of what I'm talking about(start at about 0:17):

Sony BDP-S590 blu ray ------ Samsung C700 reciever ------- Samsung LDC TV

Is it still there if you bypass the Samsung receiver? Try that next since you have already tried new cables.

I will try that tonight, thanks.

Hi hughjass5976, if you haven't done so try disabling Deep Color on the BD player to see if that helps.

tried deep color really quick on lunch, seemed to work, but it was only on for 10 minutes, not enough time to accurately say yes or no.

there seems to be more sony issues with both the 3100, and 590, I can't access any of the online services. I get a network error, however it's not my connection as the roku works the lan works for the sony's as in DLNA only streaming services seem broken. I wonder what's going on now?
Have the same issue. Can't access any streaming services after updating my firmware.

Glad im not the only one.

Appears that Sony servers are down.

Just updated the firmware on my S-390, and lost access to streaming as well.  My wireless connection and internet access both say "OK".  I've tried resetting the player to factory settings, and also tried to get online via an ethernet cable.  No luck.

It just keeps sending me in circles.  When I try to connect to Netflix or Crackle, it says "connection status cannot be confirmed".  I go back to diagnostics and it shows a good connection.

Frustrating.

Same exact thing happened to me. Hoping its something on Sony's end and not a buggy firmware release
post #3734 of 3992
It's not the firmware.

I have the same problem for both of my Sony devices - TV (KDL 46XBR9) and BR player (S480). I haven't updated firmware recently but noticed that "New Internet content is available", went to update Internet content and got this problem. Later realized that no streaming content works either.

Yes unfortunately the way sony implemented their online strategy is that any sony device that requires access to a streaming service such as netflix, amazon, etc has to first get a key (Sonys way to make sure youre device is authorized) from sony before they let you access that service,

So if Sonys servers go down ... Youre out of luck !

Should be now working though.

Yep, as of 10:48 central time it's working.  Whew.  I thought I was going to have to buy another blu-ray player.  Haha

I don't need and am not asking for "eye candy". There is no need to complicate things with another device. All I need is a simple thumbnail so that my (little) kids can easily pick out a movie to watch from the cover image. The thumbnail is already supplied by the server and there already is a placeholder for the thumbnail in the list and they already do this for photos so I don't think this is an unreasonable request. But, it seems like Sony agrees with you.

Resume is almost workable but it is too easy for the resume point to be reset (e.g. you pause the video for too long and the unit powers down on its own). Then, you have to potentially fast forward more than an hour into a video which is very inconvenient.

Understood. Another thought then is ... If you own a android or iOS device (tablet/phone) you could use a DLNA remote control (many available). That way you could pick the content via the app and then watch on the player. The apps often support cover art and video thumbnails

I tried that but there is a bug in these players (which I think you may have confirmed for me a while ago) where if the .m2ts has any codec other than MPEG2 then it fails to play if playback is initiated from a DLNA controller (but plays fine when initiated from the player's menu). I reported this bug to Sony months ago through email and their support forum but unfortunately they probably filed this in the trash bin along with my DLNA improvement suggestions.

Of course it is and I'm sure they will just let me do an even swap with my 3 590s smile.gif.

Hi there - thanks for your post about fixing the BDP-S590's profile by editing... I am just not sure "where" to edit.

I am using the S590 to play media streamed from my netgear nas duo drive, that worked prior to a firmware upgrade recently - I'm not sure if your comments will fix that - thanks if you can help

Who's comments are you referring to?

Tried AVI FourCC changer, set it to XVID in both Description Code and Used Codec, and no change

The previous comment was for the same page, post #1604 of 3745

About altering the profile, I suspect this for something else, not the BDP-S590 player?

Help please, desperate to play some media :)

What media types are you trying to play? The profile being referred to is a Serviio profile. That's old info as there is now a s590 Serviio profile in the latest installation.

You may have better luck posting on a forum for your netgear NAS. What dnla server does it use?

Netgear may have a fix (see last post)

With the latest firmware release update to version M11.R.0493 for the S390 blu-ray player I want to know if the player is now ready for 4K Mastered blu-ray disc from Sony Pictures. Does anyone has experience with these discs?
I didn't know that those 4k-mastered discs required any special capability from a BDP.

It depends on your definition of "require". Any player should be able to play the discs, but they make use of the extended color palette of x.v.Color (aka xvYCC). For you to see the color differences, both your player and your display must support it.

Currently the maximum bit rate for blu-ray is 40Mbps and the 4K Mastered blu-ray have a bit rate with a maximum of 54Mbps and that is why a BD player requires a new firmware update to accommodate the new Sony 4K Mastered specification. Sony is updating their new BD players for 4K Mastered BDs. I think that the older models will also be updated.
