I use an Ethernet connection on all devices with over 20mbs download speed...so I have never questioned my network setup when it comes to getting max quality out of my streaming equipment. I should have put that in my previous post.

C'mon man, I was looking for an excuse to buy a new little piece of hardware (ROKU 3)...j/k. But seriously, what I gather from your response is that there is no need to purchase a ROKU 3 unless I have issues with content on the BDP or want the cool headphone jack on the remote.

For Me, the Roku was an alternative to cable TV. I am on a tight budget and most times cable packages require you to pay for channels you don't watch to get the ones you do. For me, that's wasted money. Roku is much more efficient that way. It's nice it also includes the common services too. You may need a roku 3 to get youtube directly. from the site it looks like it only came to the 3. I could be incorrect though.

I also like the roku over the BDP because the interface is faster for the services, channels, and apps. Sony's selection is far more limited, and they don't do TV channels, or the variety roku has.

Whether you upgrade is up to you. the roku 3 also can do games. it also has a usb port for local playback, and a micro sd slot for storage. If you got the new netflix interface on your device, that is also faster then the BDPs

You're right...the ROKU interface is much better. I absolutely hate the cheap Sony remote/interface. I'm also on a tight budget, but can't bring myself to cut the cord because I love sports...all sports.

I guess I'm really comparing ROKU 2 and 3 then which is probably for a different thread. I'm pretty sure the ROKU 2 got the new Netflix interface a while back.

Here's another wrinkle, I have multiple Apple products (iPads and iPhones) so the AppleTV just got thrown in the ring. I'll stop digressing. Thanks.

Not a problem,

I am an apple person too I have a late 2006 macbook running lion, and an iphone 5. I had considered getting an apple TV for my itunes movie content, but to be honest using services like vudu netflix etc give me so much more options for my content.

If i want to watch my itunes content on the tv i could just buy a lightning to HDMI adapter and connect my phone.

No; the Roku 3 got this UI a month ago:

New Netflix Experience UI (Click to show)
New+Netflix+TV+Experience_US.jpg

It's unclear when or even if any other existing Roku model will get it. That new UI is nearly identical on the TiVo Roamio (and now Premiere), Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and probably some other things--Netflix is standardizing on it. It's much prettier than the old UI, though there are a host of differences and "deficiencies" versus the old UI that some Roku owners are grumbling about.

Mine definitely doesn't look like that. I must have been mistaking it with a previous UI update. Thanks for the info.

Hey All,
I have not been on AVS in a while....Just got my speed on my WOW Internet upped to 25/5 and added in an SB6121 modem....
Here is some background and issues I have been having...

1) WOW internet 25/5 -> SB6121 Modem -> Netgear WNDR3700V4 Router -> to hardwired switch ->Xbox360 / Dish DVR / S390
2) Netflix Playback setting set at Auto
3) Running the Short Test movie, my speed only gets up to 3000Kbs but does so slowly...Takes about 25-30 seconds to get there..Left it for 5 minutes and never went above 3000Kbs
4) Running a Super HD movie from Netflix, the highest category of Speed I reach is 1080HD

My questions:

1) Why is the short film only going up to 3000Kbs instead of at least 4300...or even 5800??(I understand there may be a current glitch in the S390 preventing5800 B/W)
2) Why does my movie not get to Super HD?? I remember that it used to?? Is that a function of it not getting to at least 4300kbps?
3) What is a good ramp up speed?? It takes ~~ 30 seconds to go from 240SD to 1080 HD??

In advance...thanks for the help..

Bama

Your network and internet sound fine. Slow ramp up is normal on the 390. But you should be getting 4300k eventually. Is your TV set to 720P or 1080P? If 720, then 3000k is the max.

There is also a setting on the netflix site to enable the highest speeds. I forget exactly where, but you can google it. That could be limiting you too.

ok..that solved one of my problems.....I had the S390 set on auto.... I set it to 1080P and I reran the movie test and got 4300......
Now I have to figure out why my sound, that should be at 5.1, is showing as DVD Full Mono on my Onkyo now....

If it aint one thing....it's another..
thanks for the help...

That could be BD Mix. It should be off. If you're using optical or coax, make sure you have it connected directly to your Onkyo, not passing through your TV. And leave Dolby set to Bitstream.

Not sure what it was...I reset the Onkyo and it picked up the DD+ Bitstream fine...
thanks all for the help...

Will any of the sony players get the new netflix interface like my roku 3? I actually like the new interface better.

I just did some testing with the example short on netflix. The 590 barely got to HD quality at all, and when it did, it never stayed.
The 3100 got to HD, but wouldn't stay at 5800kbps and both sony units took a long time to buffer.

The Roku 3 buffered quickly and stayed at 5800kbps. It seems like sony is slipping. I've rarely had any internet issues.

In fact, just ran speediest, and my connection is at the speed I pay for.

I believe that it's Netflix's intention that all new devices going forward have the new Netflix interface. The algorithm it uses for adaptive streaming tends to start high and ramp up very quickly on all the devices that I have it on (Roku 3, TiVo Roamio, PS3 and Xbox 360, though the 360 version is still artificially limited to 720p rolleyes.gif).

well i have the BDP 3100 in the living room with the roku 3, which is sony's current lineup, however that still has the older sony netflix interface. the only device i have with the new interface is the roku.

the only thing i'm finding the sony's useful for now is disc playback i can use plex with roku and local network streming is covered. so no need for dlna with sony either now.

2013 devices may get the new interface; I believe that 2014 devices will all have it (except for maybe ATV).

I was surprised that Xbox One has a different interface (this), when Xbox 360, PS4 and PS3 all have the same. It does mimic the look and feel of the Xbox One's system interface and is appropriate for gestural control.

The Old interface is ok, and still usable. on the 590 it seems like netflix crashes a lot randomly though, compared to the other devices. Either the unit is faulty, or it just has bad code for that device.

Either way, everything works OK, so I can't complain, other then video quality buffering on the older device. Too bad no one makes a disc only player anymore.

I use the Pandora app on my 590 and want to change what UserID it uses. How can I logoff the current UserID?

Thanks!

I had to go to the Sony Essentials website https://internet.sony.tv/customer/ and login in order to delink Pandora and then relink it using a different Pandora account.

Hey all, I just did a video tutorial on how to use DLNA over a roku. They have finally added the functionality.

Here is the video URL: http://youtu.be/LVLGgRPZpbo

I'm posting this same post to a couple threads as different people may see it. If you have a roku 3 give it a try. Maybe it works on roku 2 as well. I can't test that though. I only own the 3.

Asked this in the 790 thread however there doesn't seem to be much action over there, so l was hoping someone here could answer. I have movies in mkv containers in 264 format with audio codecs of ac3, mp3, aac, and DTS will I have any problem playing them on the 790? My nas is a WD my book live with twonky built in.

TIA

Trouble with Music Streaming Stuttering during use

Thanks for any help with this. Currently using a BDP-S590. I have used several different BD players with wi-fi that stream music or video from my computer, but the same issue occurs. After a time anywhere from 2-4 hours, the music begins to stutter. The equipment is all in an enclosed cabinet in my living room - BD Player, two receivers (powering 5 pairs of speakers throughout the living area). I thought it might a heat problem inside the cabinet, but once it happens it continues after the equipment cools off for awhile.

If this setup is not the best for streaming music, I am open to other suggestions. I just like the current setup because the BDP can be controlled via phone app on my Android. Happy to answer any questions to help solve and thanks again for any help.

1. All equipment will have intermittent problems if it overheats, gradually developing into permanent problems as the electronics permanently degrades ("cooks"). Your description suggests that you need to consider fans for each of your devices in addition to an exhaust fan for the cabinet.

2. Wireless networking is much less reliable than wired. Audio and video streaming requires a "perfect" connection, unlike computer-to-computer file transfers which can do multiple retries without you noticing. Interference from cordless phones, microwave ovens and the neighbors' networks can cause WiFi dropouts, for example.

streaming videos on Sony BPDS590

Hi,

I have been using XBMC as a media server to stream movies (AVI's, MP4, MKV) to my BPDS590 with no problems. I recently got a 3TB WD Mycloud NAS with supports DLNA. I copied all my movies over to the hard drive and the blu ray player sees the hard drive but it will not play any of the movies. It says they are corrupt or unsupported. I'm guessing that XBMC transcodes the movies and the Mycloud does not. Any ideas on this and anything I can do (maybe convert the movies)? I'm hoping that I don't have to leave my laptop on while I stream so that's why I'm trying to get away from XBMC.

Thanks
Have you considered other solutions? These BDPs have convenience networked file players but they're not the most capable ones. There are some specialized boxes like the Popcorn Hour products but they're expensive and they don't feature players for the signature network VOD services like Netflix, Hulu Plus and VUDU. I'd recommend WD TV Live; I've been impressed by its file playing capabilities.
Thanks, I was hoping the BDP would be able to do everything I needed. I never understood the point of spending a $100 on a Roku when you could buy a $100 blu ray player with all the same apps.

When my blu ray shows all the files on the MYcloud it shows them all as MPEG (even though they arent MPEG) and when it shows the same XBMC files it shows them as MPEG, AVI and MKV. Weird. If I was going to convert the videos what format would I have to convert them to?
I was actually able to get the Sony BDP-S590 to stream off the WD Mycloud after hours of reading. I was able to access the Twonky media server settings for the MYcloud by going to http://wdmycloud:9000/. From here I went to Settings/Sharing and my bluray play showed up as "Sony Blu Ray Player" under "Media Receiver Type". I changed this to "Generic Media Receiver" and saved the settings. After this my blu ray player detected all the right file types and the ones I tried played correctly. I'm not sure why it worked but it did. There seems to be a lot of people on the web with the same problem.

Here is the link to where i got the idea from.
