Michael - did you reach a final decision on Panny V Sony V Roku ? Sounds like it was a close call, given your criteria and requirements.

Yesterday I reconnected the Sony and ran easy installation again. When finished the screen showed easy install complete. Just ONE finished box. No mention of network. Tried two DVDs and they loaded and began play with no problems. Yay! When stop is pressed on remote, screen shows correct icon for DVD or BD.

However, when BD or DVD is ejected screen switches to "Internet video Select to refresh" along with the strange rectangular icon. It has an image exactly like the right facing triangle on the remote's play button within the rectangle. On the bottom right of the rectangle there is a smaller box that looks like a lock. The entire icon itself has what looks like the spokes of a circular gear surrounding it. Much like the icon for my Samsung TV's Anynet. Therefore I suspect this may be some sort of conflict between Samsung Anynet and Sony Bravia Sync.

The strange icon/message appears in the Top Menu (xmb?) unless I use the remote's left arrow and arrive under the setup icon where it disappears. I can scroll vertically under setup no problem. If I press the right arrow and scroll horizontally under any icon other than setup (photo music internet) the icon/message reappears. Thoughts?

Not in front of my player right now, but what you are describing just sounds like the internet video stuff wanting to update.

I have had that icon appear several times, and without actually knowing, I assume it is adding new content or updating the internet related stuff.

It's a toss between keeping the Sony and hoping for a replacement for its Amazon player (with greatly improved start-up performance and UI design) or keeping the Panasonic and hoping for a replacement for its Amazon player (with 5.1 sound). Yesterday the Android remote app for the 2012 Panasonics finally showed up and I plugged the 220 back in to play around with that. I was not entirely impressed with that app--though it is pretty, the only place the keypad worked was in Youtube, which I never use on these players; the keypad was what I was most looking forward too, particularly with the Google speech recognition key. However, playing with it made me realize that the 220's Netflix isn't bad. My main problem with it had been its lack of responsiveness, but I notice that scrolling around through the thumbs isn't that unresponsive, it's just its extreme tardiness in updating the information panel for the currently selected title (the S390 doesn't update that instantly either, just faster than the BDT220). I noticed that you don't have to wait for that information to be updated to press OK or PLAY on the selected thumb so that info update delay isn't that harmful, unless you're browsing through a set of titles you don't know. It is quite significantly faster at starting stream playback than the Sony, taking about 6 seconds (sometimes twice as long for the first title you start after launching the player, also true of the PS3 and Roku). The S390 never starts in fewer than 15 seconds for me and often takes more than 20.

I've managed to jam up the S390 multiple times attempting to play video over DLNA, often to the point of having to yank its power chord, and you know about the problems I've had a few times with its Netflix player. I don't see myself ever actuallying playing files over DLNA, but still.

Basically the things in the S390's favor are its more responsive Netflix UI, the Netflix info overlay (which I really miss from my days of using Netflix on the PS3) and that its Amazon player will play 5.1 sound. On its negative side is its slow Netflix playback start and its Amazon player's horrible UI and amazingly slow stream playback start. In the Panasonic's favor is its pleasant Amazon UI and faster stream start (still pretty slow). There are a couple of other things it does which don't matter to me much, like 24p output in Netflix, VUDU and other VOD services.

I need to try the Sony's Android remote to see if that improves anything, but right now I'm leaning towards keeping the Panasonic--if it had 5.1 sound in Amazon I think it'd be a lock. I got ink coming on Monday with which to print return labels, so I'll make my final decision then.

All that icon shows is a reminder to the user to refresh the Internet content. Since you're player is not connected to the net, you can ignore it. DVDs and bds should show up under the video banner along the top of the xmb.

I picked up the S590 from Target tonight for $119 plus tax and cancelled my Amazon order. Thanks for the person who let us know about the "shadow" Target deal.

However, the Netflix UI seems to be just the same as w/ the Wii. I can search, and browse recommended titles by genre or recently viewed. I can't find my queue.

Also, the subtitle usage seems clunky. I can't figure out how to turn subs on or off while viewing a program. I have to go back to the Options and turn the subs on or off there.

Thanks,
Doug

Your queue is the first line of thumbs underneath the "Search" button, the topmost line of thumbs when you launch the player.

That's the way it is--there's no button for toggling subtitles.

Screen shots showing music "now playing screen"

Network (DLNA) or USB (looks the same), CD, SACD

Note, only CD gets album art. As odd as that might sound, the player goes off to gracenote and gets the album art (and track info). The other screen, you just get track info.

Thanks for the info. I was confused, because that first line is called Instant Queue, and it doesn't include every streamable title in my Queue. I have one old title that was watched on BD months ago, one title that was deleted from my Queue probably a year ago, and one title from the bottom of my Queue. There are at least 4 other streamable title in my Queue that don't appear on the Instant Queue. And, one title that I'm currently watching is not on the Instant Queue, but is instead on the Recently Watched line.

Strange...

How many titles do you have in your instant queue if you log into Netflix from your computer ? Maybe theres a limit problem.

Another thought .... Streaming titles disappear from Netflix all the time. Is it possible the titles you had in your queue are no longer available for streaming ?

Finally the term instant queue is the Netflix term for the streaming titles queue. The only other queue Netflix has is the DVD queue. Titles in there won't appear in the instant queue.

A few new apps appeared in the SEN portal yesterday .... Weather, chess, pipes game and a weird music player.

There all pretty terrible and seem buggy. As a side note I see Sony seem to be hiring a bunch of java developers to work on this new portal so it might turn into something good ..... Maybe .... Big maybe.

Cool! Thanks to you and Strypod for getting back to me. Was a bit gun shy after my original setup issues. Apparently my problems were simply HDMI handshake related. Almost returned the player to Target. Now all is good.

$119 for the S590 (and what it offers) is a steal! I felt so guilty I bought a bunch of stuff from Target that I don't really need.

Look at your IQ on the web page and note the number of the bottom title. Go to the player and it should say "2/nnn" at the top on the right side, where nnn should be the number of that bottom title. If not, there's something weird going on. Please post to tell us what you find.

I originally had 3 titles in the Instant Queue: two of them had been gone from my complete Queue (via computer) for many months. However, in my complete Queue, I have 10 streamable titles. Only one of them appears in my Instant Queue. 4 of them are separate discs for The Killing. I'm in the process of watching disc 1, and it appears in Recently Viewed, but the other discs are not in my Instant Queue.

I have 422 in my instant queue.

Subscribers to both disc and streaming....dvd titles that are added to the dvd queue which also stream, are not automatically added to the Instant queue. You must manually add any dvd title listed as streamable to the Instant queue.

Yes exactly. I think that's the problem Doug has.

Bingo! That's the solution. Thanks to everyone for your help.

Does anyone who picked one of these up from Target know what their DCPI Product Code is for the S590? (eg. XXX-XX-XXXX) Trying to use one of the online inventory checkers to narrow down my search of area stores, but not having much luck.

I would highly recommend you just call them. The Electronics department will verify if they have the model on hand and will pull one and hold it for you if you pick it up the same day.

Hi SilverSS, the DCPI #008-06-1052 but doesn't come up on the online checker.

Yeah. I don't think they have it in their system yet. I picked mine up on the shelf w/ 2 S580s. When I took it to a scanner, it couldn't read it. However, the register read it fine, so what do I know?

Thanks guys. I did end up calling around and finally tracked one down at the 5th Target I called and they were nice enough to set it aside for me. On my way to the store to pick it up this evening, some clown is coming around a bend in the road headed toward me doing about 90, can't hold his lane and drifts completely into mine. Head-on at 45 (me) + 90 (him).....wouldn't have been pretty. I had to take a quick off-road adventure to avoid getting slammed, but luckily the shoulder was fairly smooth and clear. By the time I got back home, I wasn't in the right frame of mind to start pulling wires, but will hopefully get a chance to try it out tomorrow.

Drive safe, people...if not for yourself, for the rest of us on the road.

Wow! Nice job of avoiding that dummy. There are a lot of idiots out there. Always gotta be on the look out. Glad you got to the store safely to get the 590!
