The vast majority of budget subwoofers will be ported, primarily because that enables you to get "extra" output from lesser components. With acoustic suspension you need better drivers and amps, which generally cost too much for a budget product.
When I was doing the NXG review I had the sub about 8" from the rear wall, and it seemed to work fine that way. You might be able to move it a bit closer, but probably not too much.
