How do I get it too output more volume

My recorded music shows do not play loud enough is there some adjustments I can change on the dvr to make it record louder and or playback louder? Movie and music DVDs play a lot louder than my recorded shows. I never get near max volume with that source.

Verizon Motorola qip7232 with external harddrive

How do you listen to the audio? Do you use an external audio system? Or the HDTV's speakers?
