That's what has contributed to slowing down the 3D market. Avatar was basically the movie that got 3D taken seriously in the last decade, but that film and many of the higher profile films that have followed it have extremely limited their potential sales by getting locked into exclusivity windows.
I am sure Avatar helped sell a large number of Panasonic TVs and disc players, but not everyone bought Panasonic 3D hardware. If you wanted any of the DWA films you were locked into Samsung hardware.
Even now with retailer exclusivity, it is hard to find good deals on 3D BDs. Nothing like killing potential 3D sales by charging a $10 to $15 premium.
How are most of the 3D fans going to react if the Hobbit films are a manufacturer exclusive for 2+ years. If that is the case then by the end of the exclusivity window 3D may be dead again.
