URC R50, Xsight Color ARX15G, or Harmony 650

I recently bought a vizio soundbar to go with my Samsung plasma, and our time warner cable remote won't link up to the soundbar, so when you want to change the volume, it has to be done with the vizio remote. This has led me on a search for a cheap and easy to use universal remote that will control my:

Samsung Plasma
Time Warner DVR Box
Vizio soundbar
Panasonic Blu Ray
and XBox 360

I'm down to these three:
1. URC R50-66 shipped on amazon
2. Acoustic Research ARRX15G-64 shipped on amazon
3. Logitech Harmony 650-50 at Best Buy (I have gift cards, which is why this makes the list)

I'm leaning towards the first 2 as I have read a lot of reviews bashing the quality of logitech, but the fact that it's cheaper and I have gift cards to best buy go into consideration too.

What are the big differences between the Xsight color and the URC R50? Not looking to spend a lot, do you think it's worth ditching the harmony for these two? Also, given my current set up, does anyone know which one will have the best functionality? Any advice is appreciated.

I have a URC R40 I got a few weeks ago. It's much better quality than the Harmony, fairly easy to program. I hear the R50 is very similar, but some complained that the button placement is not as good, especially if you're going to control a DVR, something about the FF, Rew buttons being recessed.

I've read a couple people saying the r40 buttons are a better layout, but unfortunately I can't spend 150 on this right now so I've gotta limit myself to the R50. I talked to a friend about the harmony, he has used one on a friends set up and hates it. He says the buttons never work right and it doesn't control things well at all. I'm gonna pass on the harmony and put the debate between the first 2 now. Anybody?

Edit-just saw a review saying the acoustics research website isn't compatible with Macs...anybody know about this? That would probably be a deal breaker for me.

Correct, the Xsight won't run on Mac. The R50 has no computer interface, so it's a non-issue in that case.

I'm not a harmony fan, but it should work fine for your purposes. Sounds like your friend doesn't have his set up properly, so I'd take his advice with a grain of salt (no offense). When configured right (repeats/delays adjusted, macros programmed properly) harmony works as well as any other IR remote.

I thought I'd miss being able to program the remote with a computer, but I like the on-screen programming better. It's very fast to just learn a code or two as you go along. I just keep the original remotes handy, so I can program the URC if I find I'm missing something.

Thanks for the information everyone. Looks like my debate is now at the Harmony 650 vs the URC R50. Any opinions on ease of use, particularly with DVR? Also, can I set both of these so they control the cable box and the soundbar volume without switching between inputs on the controller?

Well I guess I'll be going with the Logitech since its cheaper, I have gift cards at best buy, and it's available there. Thanks for all the advice! Kind of surprised I went with this one, when I started out it was my last option.

IMO the URC has a much better build quality than the Harmony.

Haha, well it's too late now, it's already been ordered from best buy. I've read about the build quality being less than the URC, but the price was right. We'll see how it goes.

Picked up the Harmony 650 from best buy last night and got it hooked up to all my stuff. So far it's working well and all the buttons seem pretty intuitive compared to the remotes it's replacing. Pretty snazzy how it knows to turn on when it's been picked up. Thanks for all the help!

Just wanted to say that after a week of this remote repeatedly losing its programming I will be returning it and going with the URC 50. I would have kept it, but dealing with logitech customer support put me over the edge...I could hardly understand 2 of the 4 reps I talked to it seemed to me like they were reading off a manual or screen instead of actually having any knowledge of the product. Sorry Logitech but I'm out!

Sorry to hear of your troubles with the Harmony. I just ordered the R50 myself, should be here today. Keep the thread posted with your feelings on the R50

FWIW, many have solved that problem on the 650 by tightening up the battery contacts.

Also, the R50 may still be on clearance at many Target B&Ms for about $50.

I got a R50 from target yesterday for 30, I went back to get the other two that were there today and they were gone. A good remote for 30 bucks, not nearly as bad to program as everyone made them out to be. In 30 minutes I had on/off macros programmed and AVR, TV, cable box going. All that is left is a squeezebox macro and BR macro.
