Rip DVD to MKV----Help

post #1 of 6

Hi all
I have 50 or 60 DVDs that I would like to rip them and make them a bit smaller and store them on my HDD so that I can watch them later on my Oplay.....After reading forums here I got MAKEMKV, DVDFAB and HANDBRAKE....... I tried all of them....
MAKE MKV pretty straight forward and converted my DVD in 15 minutes or so but with same size so I decided to try Handbrake and DVD FAB..... Handbrake I left all the settings as default but changed the output file size from 7.5 GB to 5 GB but it takes 6 to 7 hours to convert one movie
Same thing with Hand Brake.. I converted one DVD to MKV using MAKEMKV and then used Handbrake to compress it and it tells me 7 to 8 hours to convert??????
Now my question is,Is this normal? I have Pentium 4 PC, I know its old with 3 GB RAM but MAKEMKV takes 15/20 min but handbrake and DVDFAB take almost 7 to 8 hours to rip,,,,, Is there any other program available that rips DVD easier and faster then please let me know
Or, Am I doing something wrong??????
Any help is greatly appricated......
Thanks in advance

DVDs are mpeg2. MakeMKV just copies the video data into a new container without additional compression: that's why it's the same size. It's fast because it's just copying.

Handbrake and DVDFab convert the mpeg2 video to mpeg4, which compresses to a smaller size but which requires more CPU power to produce.

If you want compression you'll need a faster processor. Note that modern tools make good use of multi-core CPUs.

Bill.....Thanks for the reply that makes sense.....But one more question when I convert dvd to MKV (not mp4) in Handbrake it takes 4 to 5 hours so it means that it is compressing as well at the same time but with MAKEMKV does not compress even though I am converting it to MKV

Right, MKV is just a container. It can have different audio and video codecs inside of it. Both mpeg2 and mpeg4 are allowed.

MakeMKV copies the DVD mpeg2 video into the MKV container. Fast, but no extra compression.

Handbrake reencodes to mpeg4: slow but more compressed.

There is no way around the size vs time tradeoff.

Now, before mpeg4 became popular people would shrink dual-layer DVDs to single layer, reencoding the mpeg2 to more compressed mpeg2. That would be faster but quality may suffer.

Quality is a concern with mpeg4 compression as well: see the many parameters in the Handbrake docs.

x264 has built in speed presets which are very effective. Medium, slow, slower, very slow etc (plus same in other direction).

Handbrake doesnt support them in the GUI but you can copy the settings into the CLI
Ultrafast
Code:
ref=1:bframes=0:cabac=0:8x8dct=0:weightp=0:me=dia:subq=0:rc-lookahead=0:analyse=none:trellis=0:aq-mode=0:no-deblock=1:scenecut=0:mbtree=0
You are basically trading encoding speed for compression. So the Ultrafast preset is extremely quick but delivers much lower quality (per size) than the Medium.

Most people would only use the Ultrafast preset for one-off encodes because it offers such poor compression (for example you are running out the door in a few minutes and want to quickly encode a TV episode to watch on the bus).

But with such a slow computer you might be able to accept this tradeoff. Obviously it will not be minutes on your Pentium, it will still take a few hours.

Superfast is a little bit slower but offers better compression
Code:
ref=1:mixed-refs=0:weightp=1:subq=1:rc-lookahead=0:analyse=i8x8,i4x4:trellis=0:mbtree=0
Again, most people with proper computers don't use such a fast preset for a permanent encode. But maybe it will suffice for your needs.

I used to rip DVDs into VOB files using DVD shrink. I believe you could use DVD shrink to squeeze to the size you want, then use Makemkv to change to mkv file. The total time for the 2 step process should be under 1 hr.
