Another happy Silver Fire screen owner... thanks MM!

I started in August to try and figure out how to install my first projector and screen with this lame thread:

I had read a lot and just kept reading. With MMs help on the phone I got my sintra cut and mounted on the wall and everything installed. I bought my paint sprayer (No Name brand) and paint to mix SF... decided on the Epson 3010 and got it mounted, but just couldn't do that last step to paint. I was so afraid to screw up what already looked pretty good.... So while MM was in town he came and painted it and I couldn't be happier! Definite improvement in hot spots, contrast and color since he painted it!

I'll try and upload some pics soon, I think you took a few too MM if you want to post them.

I can do that. And BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, even if it only lasted a very few Hours. The screen above/below was another exercise in "Rapid Deployment" because in all, the painting process itself took just under 3 hours due to assistance from a Directed Fan and Central Heat.

Here they are........everyone taken in high ambient light..........;







This next shot was taken under torturous lighting conditions, with extremely intense Overhead lighting that was at 18' from the Screen and behind a Dropped level Beam. Note the shadow line across Neo's face.







And a few "Dark Room" shots w/Sconces at 25%

Yet still some doubt (...or deny / disclaim...) SF's performance ability to compare to Black Diamond. So they are condemned to spending $3k more than they need to.

nothing like paying some 3K+ for a less than 100" screen that has a verifiable shimmer and sparkly pixels as described by owner after owner on the screens forum. smile.gif

If I see another spate of 70 degree Dallas weather while I suffer along in 30 degree junk in Memphis, it might be sooner than later!

And yet still they "step back" into their own decisions based on effusive advertising that conveniently omits important facts.

The BD lineup looks best when a very low lumen output is delivered and the PJ placed just so. Up the lumen s and fail to accommodate the Retro-reflective aspect of the BD screens and you get....well, what PB said.

As usual, the rush to get the "latest & greatest" in anything lures the unsuspecting into the web of the willingly omited unknown.

Im just getting my first projector (panny 7000 or epson 3010) and im looking for advice on a DIY screen. Can you send me to the right link to build the right one?
Im thinking 2.35:1 ratio so i can cover up the sides when watching 16:9 and would like it to be about 10 feet wide...Height i can make whatever i need to but i have 8 foot cieling if it matters. Room is 15 by 15 and extremely light controlled...

Big difference between those two. If you want a big 2.35:1 Screen though, the Panny is the go to choice.

As long as you don't plan on two rows of seats, I see any issues here. (...otherwise a Riser would be required...) A Constant Image Height that uses Hand-pull or Electric side curtains for masking is very do-able.

Here are the suggested specs:

13.8" Throw (lens to screen)
Lens height: 14" from Ceiling
Screen sizes 2.35:1 = 49" x 115" <125" diagonal> 16:9 = 49" x 87" <100" diagonal>
Top of screen 12" from ceiling

For your application, the choice of screen (substrate material and paint ) requires a bit more delving into.
  • Can you paint the room to accommodate the use? Darker colored walls and even darker Ceiling? Black is not required, just appropriate colors.
  • You could do quite well using RS-MaxxMudd LL
  • If the wall surface is in excellent condition or can be made to be so...your golden.
  • Can you /are you willing and able to consider spraying the screen?

    So now you have a basic outline. Start that dedicated thread and let's simply address your specific needs there. No searching, guesswork, assumption, or re-adjusting. Just "doing it". cool.gif
