Hmm... is it not true that both Comcast and Direct TV are squeezing more data into the same bandwidth by
1. Comcast is recompressing the MPEG2 (you can see this on the Olympics fast moving scenes vs. OTA in Chicago)
2. DIrectTV is trans-coding from the providers MPEG2 delivered stream -> MPEG4 at about 5mbit.
Look at the incredible time it takes even modern CPU's to transcode from MPEG2 HD (say camera) to high quality MPEG4....
Blu-ray will not be beat for bandwidth and quality of encoding (both average and peak).
