Official Sharp AQUOS LC-80LE844U Owners thread - Page 65

I have a problem when changing channels with my 844...
i have brighthouse cable with a DVR (all screen size formats set to available in the config)... connected through my pioneer elite receiver...

Sometimes when changing a channel the screen will go black. almost like the video signal is lost. I still have sound coming through the receiver, but no picture. If I change the channel again to another channel that is of the same resolution, the picture is still gone and the audio still works. I have to change to a channel with different resolution than the current for the picture to come back.

Example being: watching a channel that is 480i, then changing to a channel that is 1080i. It will display in the upper right corner of the screen that video signal source size is 1080i, but the screen goes black. I hit previous channel on remote, it changes back to prev channel, 480i pops up in the display in the top right and the screen comes back on. hit prev channel on remote again, it goes back to other channel, 1080i pops up and then this time picture comes on. (on occasion it takes doing this 2 times to get the signal to display??)

anyone else having this issue?? bugging the hell outta me!!!

In the last week or so, one of my 844's has started doing the "black screen" thing - actually what is happening is like the TV is rebooting itself the white V below the Sharp emblem goes out - the "blackout" lasts just a few seconds. and then the V and picture come back. I have backed up the DVR to the point where the blackout occurred and there is no problem with the DVR - it continues to record and I don't miss anything on the second play. I can't imagine that this is a problem with HDMI cables or the DVR going out - even with a lack of signal it should not cause the V emblem to go out as if the TV were turned off.. I suspect a faulty circuit board within the TV and I suspect a service call will be necessary in the near future.

Anyone experienced this while watching a BD, or only which watching a cable source? I have only seen it with a cable source but I just got the TV and have not watched a full BD yet.

I have PS3 camera sitting in front of the illuminating logo so can't say if that went out as well.
Heck some times even on sunny day I would see searching for signal error message popup. I like DTV but signal seems to be hyper sensitive.

On another note, the NFL game on NBC is a massive upgrade in PQ compared to MLB on the Extra Innings channels. As everyone has indicated the set is very sensitive to the source.

Ok..this is wierd...My wife just told me last night after I asked her after reading the thread that she has noticed a few times that the screen would turn black and then come back on...The only reason that makes me feel a little relief is that we are all experiencing this, but what is the cause? Is it hardware related or a bad portion on the pcb? I purchased the tv back in June and am wondering if I should buy the Sharp warranty now as well??

I have this same issue with my HR34 DTV receiver set to native resolution. I assumed the black screen was a DTV issue with switching resolutions of the channels. It takes like 5 seconds for the new channel to pop up. I am using native resolution because of an issue the 844U has switching back to 2D mode from a 3D channel [see my previous posts in this forum regarding this problem]. Bottom line is that there are some quirks with the 844U that did not exist in last year's 735U which forced me to use native resolution rather than set the resolution to 1080i (I "upgraded" from a 735U to a 844U).

Just now screen going black happened 3 times and each time came back after few seconds. I was watching Discovery HD. There is dark clouds with light rain in my area and it is definitely caused by hyper sensitive DTV signal. I can't believe signals in the 90s are getting lost due to light rain. mad.gif I don't remember signal being this sensitive with DISH.

My guess is you are sending the signal to the tv as native. Try changing that setting on your cable box setting.

For those of you who have purchased their 80" from Best Buy, it was said you just showed the Store Manager quotes from other OnLine retailers and they said YES they would compare prices and beat it (or at least match the best price).
Yet when I talk to the Department reps they say that they will only match other Big Box stores in their area and NOT any web sites! mad.gif
So what do you say to get them to bend to the Online prices?
Do you contract several BB stores looking for the YES?eek.gif
Your thoughts?rolleyes.gif
At my local bestbuy store the manager looked up prices himself and matched the lowest one he found

Obviously all BB's are not created equal.

When I went to my local BB (Santana Row) the sales rep seemed fairly responsive to dealing on price. He then offered me a unit that was currently at a customers house for roughly 3 weeks and was returning it due to the size not meeting his requirements. He offered full warranty as if new. I thought at this time I would get a smoking deal but we were way off base. I had showed him numerous online reatilers with product in stock and he said he would have to consult with the sales manager. I told him what I was willing to pay (which was roughly 400 more than what I found online) which I thought was more than fair due to taxes and having local support and he could'nt even come close to that. I told them I had cash in hand and he was still close to 400 higher than my offer. I bid him a good day and was out the door.

A day later I received a voice male stating that the sales manager had good news for me. So peaking my interest and after playing phone tag for the next day or so I finally got through and the new offer was still 200 over my original offer which would have put it 600 higher than what I could have gotten online. I really wanted to be able to support my local brick and mortar but they just didn't seem interested even with used product.

I ended up purchasing a brand new unit with (4 pairs) 2 more sets of glasses than they offered and same warranty with a calibration disc and hdmi cable thrown in for roughly 600 less.

So yes not all BBs are willing to cut the good deals.

Yes I just got 80 inch 3D tv at BB ,

It went with couple of offers for online retail and lucky me I ran across the manager of the store that was passing by the magnolia area. And told him, I'm here to buy this tv but this 2 stores have them cheaper. Show him the print out of east coast tv and some weird company of ny that was selling it cheaper.
Take in consideration this tv is right now in bb website for 5499.99 and east coast tv has them for 4430.99.

I saw the tv with the wife. I notice that the tag of the tv say 4999.99 but the tag expire on sept 3 but they still have to give the tv to you at that price because someone didnt do their job. So that is a price match right there...

So the manager took all my offers and say be right back, maybe to check on the website himself.
He came back 20 minutes later and say I can't give you this deal but I will give it to you for 4590, and I was like let make this deal...." yes it was couple of hundred more but I don't trust east coast tv with my credit card number plus BB give you reward and no interest for 36 months" Beside this tv in bb website cost 5499 so I think I got a good deal. You let me know what I got is describe below.

We were in the process of doing the order when I told my wife I wonder if he will give me the glasses for free. " I ask for 2 and I got 4 pairs of glasses for free"
I said to my wife let me push this and ask for 2 hdmi cables for free. " got them as well" I told them I need the mount as well " 279 in bb.com got it for 153 in the store "
So my total purchase came around 5080.80 for the 3d 80 tv, 4 3d glasses for free 2 3ft hdmi cables for free "@40 cable", the wall mount for 153' plus since best buy has free shipping BAMMMMM..... will get them to my house on Tuesday ....

So icant wait to set this bad boy up.....

so my advise shop around multiple bestbuy and try to speak With the manager of the store and no the sale reps...

I don't think it is because of weather. I think it is something else. My current theory is HDMI handshake problems but I'm not sure how to prove it or what do about it. I wonder if anyone uses component connection and if they have a problem.

I just had this happen again for the third time in a week and I observed it carefully - watching movie on HBO - DTV - screen goes black, upside down lighted V emblem below the Sharp logo goes out, sound goes out (all my inputs - DirectTV,PS3(as a blu-ray player), XBOX etc are connected to TV thru HDMI and then a single optical audio output to my receiver) - then TV comes back on showing input and screen resolution in upper right corner of the screen just like it does when you turn the TV on. The TV is rebooting itself - that is the only explanation that would fit these observations can't blame it on HDMI handshake (if that were the case then the V emblem would stay lit just like it does if there is no signal going to the TV).Since I have a DTV HR 24 DVR I can "rewind" back to the part of the movie I missed (usually about 5 - 10 seconds) and it plays fine so I don't think it is the DVR If this is the case and other people are experiencing the same problem there is a basic flaw in the ciruit boards or perhaps (hopefully) it could be fixed with a firmware update.

So basically it's turning off & then restarting ??
IIRC they had a simular problem with the Elite's & it was the IR receiver was going out
turned out that it was a faulty part that was supplied by a vendor & only units in a certain build date in the window of production were affected

Your deal was ok, I think you still paid about $500 more than a lot of people.

Who? This should really go to the "Deals" forum, but I'll just say I haven't seen anyone getting this TV for $4000.

I had the same experience with my LC-70LE845U and I did contact Sharp.
I was told to unplug the set for 5 minutes to give the set a hard re-boot before proceeding further.
I was told that it would be covered by warranty indefinitely now that I had filed a complaint.
It happened to me 2 consecutive nights after one hour of viewing.
First the sound, then the picture, then the chevron would go out and then immediately, the set re-started.
No more problem afterward.
They have no record of the problem, so folks need to let them know!
After the unplugging/reboot, I haven't had the problem again, but it's only been one additional day so far...

It may be several days between incidents on my set. On the 844 there is a basic submenu that you can reboot from with certain keystrokes on the remote (can't remember what they are) but that might be even a better option than unplugging the power cord. I think that the basic reboot also wipes out your settings (like calibration - input names etc.)

Sounds like it is going to take a number of people reporting the same problem before Sharp does something about it. Perhaps just a firmware update?

I hav experienced the tv reboot twice already.

Anyone thinks its a latest firmware related issue?

Prior to tat, didnt experience such problems

I wish it were the latest firmware update as that would be straightforward to fix but I believe I had it before. I think we need to each contact Sharp to report the problem.

I doubt if unplugging the power would wipe out calibration settings.

Added my settings calibrated by Best Buy. I know it can't beat Chad's settings, but it looks pretty decent.

I meant a "basic reboot" using certain keystrokes on the remote or perhaps holding certain buttons on the TV itself(can't remember exactly - tech support walked me through it before) and not unplugging. If power is out or the unit is unplugged the personal settings on the TV are not wiped out.

Hate that my first post is a complaint/issue with the unit. I too get the tv "reset" problem. Just last night it turned off/on twice within an hour. I'm using DTv HR24 and Bose V35 system. If anybody wants to try to get Chad down here in the Louisiana/Texas area let me know and we can see if we can make it worth his time. Thanks for all the help on this thread! Excellent info!

so what's the concensus here fellas on the tv going black problem? I have not yet seen it for myself, but my wife has told me it has happened a few times. She says the tv will go black and there will be no sound...Also, she says the onkyo receiver will show "no signal" on the display. To me, this sounds more like the stb having the issue, but until I see it for myself, I have to think my tv is doing what your tvs' are doing. I have the next few days off, so maybe i'll just sit back and watch tv and see for myself....kinda puts a damper on my enjoyment as I still owe a little less then 2 grand on my credit card before the tv is paid off, and I have to worry if it's gonna break or not

I still believe it's an issue with signal/stb. It doesn't happen very much but when it does I don't think it, rebooting the TV, just screen goes blank.

If i disconnect the STB (DTV in my instance) the white upaide down "V" power indicator still stays lit. When the black screen happens on my set not only does the power indicator go out and come back on but then you see the input/screen resolution showing in the upper right part of the screen (before the picture comes on) just as if you had turned the TV on and off with the remote. Can't see how the STB would affect that. Also, if I go back over the part that was blacked out (using the HD DVR) there is no blank - none of the scenes are missed.
