Official Sharp AQUOS LC-80LE844U Owners thread - Page 74

I just pulled the trigger last night on one of these as well. Getting it delivered later this week. I really can't wait.
I just had my set calibrated by Best Buy and I must say I am overly impressed. After reading all the negative remarks I wasn't expecting much. I was OK with the picture out of the box as I am a bigger is better type of guy however now I have my cake and eat it too. He also spent some time setting up my 7.1 surround system getting it to sound like I wanted but couldn't get it to.

I just bought one also. Mine will arrive late this week or early next.

I am just a little apprehensive about one thing, I sit only 15 feet from my TV. I figured bigger will be better, and I hope I figured right.

Anyone know which side the serial # sticker is on? Is it on the same side as the volume and channel controls? I need to take a picture of it for Sharp and since it's sitting in my cabinet I can't tell. Someone can save me some work if you can tell me.

Thank you.

Sorry to say but the sticker is dead in the center on the back. Since mine is not mounted on the wall, I just looked behind it and checked for you.

I sit 12-13 feet away and the picture looks amazing!

LOL. I'll just send a picture of the sticker that was on my manual. For some reason they had me do factory reset as well even though I told them blob I'm seeing was in the panel and I could see it from multiple sources.

Thanks for verifying. I appreciate your help.

There is a small sticker with the serial number on the front right side bezel near the bottom.

Just our of curiosity.....

At 12 to 13 feet away, do you wish you had the 90 inch?

If price were not the issue, would you pick the 90 instead?

I'm unsure what set to get....

I sit about 13 feet away and 80 inch seems just fine. I suppose I would prefer a 90 but not by that much. I moved up from 60 inch and the difference is dramatic. 90 inch is not a dramatic increase over 80. Besides price is a factor. The 90 is about twice the price. I don't think it is worth it.

again i like to buy the 90 but is very true for the price of the 90 i buy 2 80 inch..

I think Sharp missed the mark BIG TIME by pricing the 90" $5000 more than the 80" what in the world were they thinking? eek.gif
Now had they increased the price by $2000 instead of $5000 alot of people would have moved up....including me! cool.gif

I sit 10-1/2' from my 80" and find that PERECT for watching Hi-Def. At 15 feet you can barely tell the difference between 720P and 1080P.
Another words, at 10-1/2' a normal set of 20-20 eyes can JUST see all the detail in a 1080P presentation.
Of course, if you're watching DVD's or non Hi-Def broadcast, the picture will look significantly softer. You can move a lot further back to make it look better, but I just try to avoid standard definition (not too hard to do anymore.......).

I'm looking at this TV to replace my KDS70XBR2. I like the size, no 3D but I don't care about that. However I see lag on the screen when I check it out at Costco. Someone moves their hands quickly and it takes the screen a second to "catch up", or a zone on the screen seems to delay a bit, I can see the same thing happen on the 70 inch as well (lesser), but the Sammy plasma's seem to not be affected. I notice the Sharp branded video "loop" at another retailer seems to have lots of stills so here comes my question-

In short is it the costco source (crappy coding better compensated for on the other sets) or does the TV do this a bit? It's not terrible and I can for sure see how someone would want this set in the house. I could grab one and bring it home, but 80 inches is not a small amount of effort to set up, only to decide I don't like it.

If you don't care about 3D the look at the80" 632 or the costco 633 it a way better set with no issues at all
plus save some cash

I upgraded from 70XBR2 and I'm happy with the 844u although I'm working to get my set replaced with new one. 3d is great. I just bought and watched Avatar 3d and it looks awesome on this set.

Motion handling is something you'll have to get used to on this set . I have mine set to film mode +1 and 240hz and it works great so far. Also you can't judge picture quality from retail stores. It looks way better with your HD feeds.

i think you are right but i sit about 15ft or 14ft and something away from my tv and i could see the difference between 720p and 1080p specially when the 1080p movies play at 24hz.

I'm glad to hear that I will sit about 13 feet from mine (when it arrives), and I was concerned that might be too close.

Not to close at all. Technically you should be going with the 90" to see the benefits of 1080p at 13ft per this chart http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html
post #2210 of 3622
Recommended THX Viewing Distance is 8.9 feet. Maximum THX Viewing Distance is12.6 feet.Maximum recommended SMPTE Viewing distance is 10.8 feet. Maximum Viewing distance is 30.2 Feet. After all that, I sit about 13 feet away. I did have it at about 9 before redecorating, and I preferred that distance.

I think that is likely due to the quality of the presentation and not the display format. I can think of several instances where a very sharp 720P presentation looked much better and more detailed than a soft 1080P (and old remastered 35mm film for instance). Try a current Blu-Ray digital animation like "Tangled" for instance and juggle the settings for a better comparison. Your point is well made though - just because it says 1080P or 720P does not guarantee that the resolution is actually at that level. I just bought a new Blu-Ray yesterday.........One of my favorites - Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels (Jason Statham's first movie I think) and although I liked it, the quality was barely better than some of my best DVD's. smile.gif

I have not had the re-boot problem since the last SW update. I cannot be sure its gone but it would normally have shown up by now so I am optimistic that it has been addressed. I do have a new, less troubling problem however. The screen will occasionally go blank for about 1/2 sec or so. No re-boot, white chevron stays on, just a very quick blank blip. It happens very quickly but still something is going on. I have no idea if it is my cable box or the TV or what it is but I don't recall seeing it before. Any one else experiencing this?
Hey Elbig...I have not had the reboot issue either since the update. As far as your "blip" issue, do you think it could be the tv handshaking with the avr or stb? There could be a very slight delay in obtaining the signal and that is what causes the "blank blip" I went into all the tv menu settings and turned a lot of things off like all the power settings, stand by settings and also I had aquos link turned off, but since I use the "arc" feature for HDMI (I watch netflix, etc) I left it on. Everything seems to be working fine now....I also let the stb do the scaling and keep the avr set to "pass through" mode. IMO, the less devices scaling, the better, and there is less delay for the signal to get to the tv, as the signal does not have to be converted.

I suspect the blip is some sort of hand shake issue. It happens at random times (not unlike the hopefully cured re-boot problem). I haven't tried turning off those settings but that seems like a good idea. I know most of the signal processing settings were turned off by the calibrator. Anyway, still loving the set, Football has been awesome.

I am now looking for a store that would be willing to send this baby to Germany/Europe. Does anybody know of such a reliable seller? Best case would be of course the check for dead pixels before shipping and a check if the device is working properly. Returning it would be a problem.
Any help here would not be for free, I am offering a reward in form of Amazon.com gift voucher if you help me to find it for a good price smile.gif
Thanks a lot for helping a big screen addict from Germany..we are lightyears behind the US when it comes to big screens frown.gif

Maybe try OneCall, ABT or Vanns as I've had good luck with their USA shipping and quality.
Good luck and hope you find what you are looking for.

Take lots of photos in a hi-res format to highlight the effect , I've seen guys get a replacement display just from emailing the photos like that to Sharp

Sharp didn't even send a tech out to look for the problem it was all handled by emailing photos . biggrin.gif
Sharp sent a new display that was delivered, un-boxed , set up & then the delivery guys boxed up the defective display and took it away
all in just one visit
A few guys had wall mounts & they even mounted the new display on the wall as well ......

Sharp authorized an exchange for my unit. They indicated there wouldn't be any production until late November so if I didn't want to wait they would work with the place I purchased from if they had one to replace and was willing to pick the old set up. I think I'll just work directly with Sharp on the exchange.

Thanks for the information Fastslappy. It was very helpful.

Stay with the Sharp
service , make sure you get that agreement in writing (email will work)
Listen some guys I've seen get a new year model
by that I mean if Sharp comes out with a new 80" & phases out the 844 for next year , they will send you that newer model
Seen this happen a few times already , it happened this late Spring one of the guys on the 632 thread had a Blob just like yours on his 80" 632 , they said none were in production at the time & Sharp sent him a new/just released @ the Time a NEW 844 No Added cost smile.gif
there were guys in 2011 who had panels fail on model year 2009's Sharp's & they were given New 2012's .
the above is the reason to BUY the extended warranty from Sharp no 2nd party warranty company will do the above .

Good Luck & keep your paperwork ,with a log of all phone calls noting date, time & who you talked to. wink.gif
