Listen some guys I've seen get a new year model
by that I mean if Sharp comes out with a new 80" & phases out the 844 for next year , they will send you that newer model
Seen this happen a few times already , it happened this late Spring one of the guys on the 632 thread had a Blob just like yours on his 80" 632 , they said none were in production at the time & Sharp sent him a new/just released @ the Time a NEW 844 No Added cost smile.gif
there were guys in 2011 who had panels fail on model year 2009's Sharp's & they were given New 2012's .
the above is the reason to BUY the extended warranty from Sharp no 2nd party warranty company will do the above .
Good Luck & keep your paperwork ,with a log of all phone calls noting date, time & who you talked to. wink.gif

I called back to tell them I will wait but exchange department is closed for the weekend and I'll need to call them Monday. So far I have not gotten any paper work on this. I sent in photos Monday evening and when I called today to check status service rep said exchange was approved then he transferred me to the exchange department which gave me information about none being in stock. I will request email confirmation of this exchange on Monday when I talked to them.

Thanks again.

So mine arrived tonight. I fired it up and the screen looks great. So I start to put the stand together, and discover that two of the screw holes in the stand were not tapped. Aaaaaarrrrrgghhhhh!

Oh well, better than a cracked screen. Looks like I'll head out in the morning to buy a tap.

I myself would have the display
replaced OR fixed by a Tech , If you tap it & F%&k something up your Toast as far as Sharp fixing it .eek.gif
If You decide to do a Tap repair MAKE SURE YOU USE A BOTTOMING TAP ! ! ! !

all the inputs & connections are on the left side about 6 inches in from the left edge as you look at the display facing it .
about a 1/3 of the way up from the bottom
near there would is what I'd do
my 80" is wired with the Rack on the Right with wires running across the back right to left ,
old school over here . . . . L O L smile.gif

Fortunately, it's not one of the holes on the TV, its a hole in the post that attaches to the bottom of the stand and the TV. It's one of the screws that attaches the post to the stand bottom.

How do you tell build date of your tv?

guys have gotten their build dates by calling support , when the rep punches in your s/n they can see the build date .
When I had my Sharp 60" UN88 (that was a great display last CCFL Sharp made ) there was a bad batch of them that had a production run that had a known to be failing motherboard , we all called & checked our s/n , Sharp was very good about it as they fixed pro-active , in other words if your unit was in that production run they replaced the MB with out the MB failing 1st . Mine was fine but others had a tech in the house for 20 minutes , slapped the new MB in the old out painless smile.gif

I bought my 80-632U from Visions last year when they just came out. They were willing to dicker a bit then and accepted my offer of 1000.00 off listed price. They stopped dealing with Sharp some months ago. Not sure why but I see in their current flyers that they are advertising Sharp TV's again. Don't know if you have a Visions near you or if they ship out of province. Can't tell by your sign-on whereabouts you are. I'm in Vancouver BC. Anyway, it's worth giving them a call and see how flexible they are. Good luck.

So I got my monster set up last night and I have to say when I first unpacked it and saw how big it was, I was afraid I went too big (seating is about 10 feet from the screen). After a little viewing and picture adjustment, I couldn't be happier! At first, I saw what everyone meant by SOE. I liked it for about 5 minutes, and then decided it had to go, but that was easy to correct. I used the settings from a professional calibration posted here:

http://reviews.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/sharp-lcd-tv/sharp-80LE844U-calibration.html

OPC Off
Blacklight +14
Contrast +37
Brightness -14
Color -1
Tint +3
Sharpness -1
Digital Noise Reduction Off
Monochrome Off

Advance Settings
Color Gamut Range Expanded
Motion Enhancement Off
Active Contrast Off
Gamma +1
Black Level n/a
Film Mode Off

10 point settings
Position Red Green Blue
1 +29 +12 +26
2 +7 +3 +10
3 -2 +1 -5
4 -9 -2 -8
5 -14 -1 -10
6 -17 -1 -17
7 -18 -2 -20
8 -18 -1 -18
9 -15 0 -5
10 -5 0 0

C.M.S
Color Hue Saturation Value
Red +8 0 +5
Yellow +1 0 -6
Green 0 0 +30
Cyan -4 0 +30
Blue 0 0 -4
Magneta 0 0 +10

I then ran the Spears & Munsil HD disc and ended up raising the brightness to -2 and maxing out the contrast. I am thrilled with the picture. I also installed an Oppo 103 into the system. I occasionally get lip sync issues, but they go away when I stop and restart the disc. I am pretty sure that is the Oppo, though.

I watched a little bit of Hugo 3D, and I really like the 3D performance and experience.

Overall, this TV has far exceeded my expectations after seeing it in the BB showroom. Thanks to everyone here for the great information that made me choose this TV and then get it dialed in. I will get a pro calibration after about 100 hours of viewing. biggrin.gif

Thanks, I am in alberta near calgary.

The 632U i can locate here in canada for a great price (really good actually, competitive with u.s. pricing, their was a future shop promotion putting it at under 4k recently), but the cheapest 844u I can find is about 2k more. For 3d and quatron?

Anyway I hope it changes shortly here in canada, the more I looked the more absurd pricing i found, I think the brick has it listed at well over 6k. Guess it does not matter right now, because future shop and a few other places all have 0 in stock although I did not try to hard with that pricing.

My set arrived yesterday. I haven't been that excited about any electronics product in a long time.

This set is fantastic. I watched "Goldfinger" in Bluray and marveled at the picture. Later I watched college football, boxing, and a DirecTV movie.
The clarity and colors are impressive. The size, combined with surround sound, is immersive.

I was worried about the 80 being too big for my room (I sit 14 feet away), but no longer.....How much is that 90"? Haha!

Later I may try the settings posted above by Raylinds out of curiousity (thank you!), but for now I am 100% satisfied with this Sharp TV.

If I change the settings is there a factory reset option if I want to change back?

I haven't hooked up to Wifi yet, how important are the updates?

Thanks to all who have shared their experiences with this set.

I too am using this setting but with some modification. Mainly this setting looks way better under standard than movie mode that article used. Also to me the backlight was way too high especially for night time viewing. I put the backlight at +12 but set OPC on with OPC range of +12 to -14 so TV will auto dim the backlight based on my room lighting. I also set active contrast on, quad pixel plus 2 to advanced, Filmmode to +1 and motion enhancement to 240 hz.

@ BB they have this model on display stating that it is 240hz tv? I thought this was a 120hz panel with software aquosMotion saying 240 or 480?

Sharp shows it as a native 240Hz refresh rate.
They show the 90" as a 120HZ native refresh rate.

I know that with both, they show software making the refresh higher....

Thanks. Besides the 3d is this really a much better upgrade from the 632? I've poured over these forums and haven't had any clear argument to why this tv is better. I guess it has better capabilites to be calibrated? Beside this I mean is it really better?

If I get something like this http://3dnow.com and use that for 3d does this 844 have better processing?

I feel that the 632 is the better display due as it only a 3 color pixel , has Zero issues , seems to calibrate better going by reports from owners & the calibrators . unless 3D is a huge feature then it's a better buy than a 844 . If you have to have 3D then by all means get a 844 .
as the 240 & 480 issue if you look thru both threads on the 632 & 844 most all have the display set @ low 120 rolleyes.gif

For what it is worth, my set received the firmware update a couple of weeks ago. I cancelled the repair shop from coming to replace the mother board, as I have not had 1 instance of the set recycling itself since the firmware update - approximately 80 hours of viewing over the past 2 weeks.

I'm still watching to see if it happens again, but based on the results so far, it appears my issue (and it sounds like other folk's too) was due to a software/firmware issue, not a hardware issue.

I updated to the new firmware October 11 (day after it was released) and no rebooting of the set since that time. Prior to that it had happened 3 days in a row just before the update. Looks like they have it fixed.

I'm probably exception to the rule but I like my set at 240hz w/ film mode at +1. biggrin.gif

I also think the quad pixel plus 2 makes the diagonal lines smoother, active contrast improves contrast and like OPC on for viewing during day time as well as night time while everyone else seems to shut all these off.

The specs show 240 native. Do you have actual proof that that is not true?
