Hello Everyone,

Considering the LC80LE844U.

Does this model have HDMI 1.4a?
Does this model have the new 300mhz HDMI Chip?
Is there any way to view Checkerbox 3D mode on this model?
Screen surface on this model is Semi-Gloss,Semi-Matte,Completely Matte?

Thank you,
Monnie

My 844u will be here on Monday from Paul's TV. Manna will be delivering it, and I got the white glove upgrade on my delivery for free. I am hoping they will allow my to plug it in and inspect for dead pixels before signing. I am guessing though that they will only let me inspect it with power off before I sign. Anyone have suggestions on what to look for when inspecting my TV?

I have my wall mount, and I was hoping to get it installed before Monday. My prime seat for viewing will be about 12ft from the TV and my eye level will be just over 3ft from the floor. Worst seat will Probably be the closest seat to the TV on the sectional couch which is only about 6ft from the wall that the TV will be on. That seat will also be at a decent angle maybe like 45deg. So any advice on where to put my mount? The room is 13ft by 14ft with 8ft ceilings.

I am also looking for advice for sound. I need to get something figured out for my sound. I want to get Chad out here for calibration asap and I would like to have sound system installed so I can get it calibrated as well. My budget for sound is about $1500.

with a budget of $1500 look @ the "Home Theater-in-Box" stuff @ Newegg, Vanns J&R,Amazom .
Or look @ the Onkyo's 515 line & a set of 5.1 speakers like Klipsch,Polk,
Newegg, J&R & Vanns have package deals as well if " HT In A inbox " is not appealing

I meant to say Checkerboard

Checkerboard Mode:

www ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.9/ug/node103.html

"Checkerboard stereo works by interleaving the left and right eye views on every other pixel in the display window, in a checkerboard pattern. This type of stereoscopic display mode is compatible with a range of DLP projectors and TV's, in combination with shutter glasses. The only special requirements for the graphics accelerator are that it provide a stencil buffer which is used to generate the alternating columns in the final image. This mode is generally supported by low-cost gaming GPUs."

Thank you,
Monnie

Has anyone looked at this model in a store yet and compaired it to the Sharp Elite PRO-Z5FD Series 70 inch. I know the Elite has a better picture but curious to know how big the difference is.

I am torn between the Elite 70 inch and this Sharp AQUOS LC-80LE844U.
I really want a bigger picture than 70 inch and 80 inch is perfect for the space I have.
I understand the 844U has full array but not local dimming. I wish that were not the case.

The Sharp 9 series coming out in late summer will have the full array and local dimming but I already sold my current set and need something before then.

Just wondering if anyone has seen the two side by side.

Sharp "945" series or "Elite Lite" seems to be canceled

So Elite 70 or 80"..... I keep wavering also. The local dimming and perfect black/contrast of Elite has me coming back....

The '945' cancelled? Well I guess I don't have to wait for that. I talked to Robert at VE and he said they had wanted to have the '945' for the HDTV shootout but it wasn't coming out until the end of August but now may not come out at all?

Yeah just looked at the Elite again today...jaw dropping picture. The price now is not all that much more compared to what it used to be for the Elite over this new 80 inch.

Oh decisions ....decisions. I wish there were more user comments on this new unit.

What is your viewing distance dreaux ?
Got mine today and was trying to figure out picture settings to get rid of the Masters golf ball tails during flight. Not much luck so far but I'm getting ChadB to calibrate later this month or May.

3D is pretty cool but I don't think I could watch 4 hours of it though.

No one knows for sure. Competing rumors. But for something due out in summer no one had timing etc. CNET STARTED the rumor it was cancelled.

I have between 8' to 13' to work with. Right now it's 13' since I am viewing a Mits 82838 82 inch DLP.

Golf ball tails? Is that type of lag normal for LCD's???

--The viewing angle will be better on the 80" sharp compared to the Mits.
--The picture quality will be about the same or better on the sharp compared to the Mits.
--This 80" Sharp is not local dimming so it would not be fair to compare it to the Elite, as we know the Elite will have a better picture overall.
--The bottom line is there is no way you are going to be happy going down to a 70" anything. Downsizing does not work out when it applies to TV size.

So, you simply have to decide if PQ trumps a set with almost one-third more viewing area. It sounds like you really want to choose size, so I'll just add that as an 80" 632 owner I don't see how, unless the 844 has a worse picture, you could be dissatisfied with that choice. And like Chris said, a drop in size by one-third from your Mits would be hard to live with.

Thanks for your insights Chris. Your comments help since I think you have seen both the Mits picture and the new Sharp picture. But if the new Sharp PQ is only as good or slightly better than the Mits 82838 it makes me wonder if it is really worth getting a new Sharp, even with its great size. I was hoping for jump in PQ, although I am sure it is brighter.

Just got a iPhone 4 so the camera isn't great plus my stand hasn't arrived so it's sitting on the floor. I wouldn't know what people are interested in seeing anyway. If you want to see iPhone 4 pics of a specific thing let me know and i'll post away.

Normally I would've waited but with those Sharp price fixing rumors I went quick.

I wouldn't even know how to find a dead pixel but I'm sure ChadB will look for them as part of his procedure. There are a ton of options so I have no idea what numbers/combination makes it look good. I just ran with the Suzook set for now.

I messed with the aquamotion setting trying to get rid of the golf tail on the ESPN masters coverage non-3d version. I tried all 4 with no luck. I watched some hockey highlights and didn't seen any puck trails so perhaps it's the white on blue that makes it more prevalent.

It could also be like the old school DLP rainbows in the case some people would see it and some wouldn't.

On power on, it has a white arrowhead on the bottom bezel telling you it's on. Not sure if that can be turned off.

The boxing makes the TV pretty heavy and is labeled with a 150lbs. I moved it up 2 flights of stairs with a friend. The remote and stuff is in the top part of the box. We didn't bother opening the top after lifting off the box and it took us forever to find it.

The bottom part of the stand feels flimsy but it holds the TV.

The wireless setup in the TV wizard is lame. Just use the regular setup as it's more straight-forward. Plus it had a firmware update right out of the gate which took about 10 minutes.

I'm gonna watch some blu-rays today for the first time ever so that should be fun. Fire away any other questions and I'll do my best.

One last thing just a shout-out to Cleveland Plasma for such quick turn-around on the TV and just great customer service in general.

Im about to take the plunge and order the 844. Im upgrading from a sony kdf70xbr950, a 70" rear projection LCD. The max res on the sony is 768p upscaled to 1080i.

Im expecting a significant boost in overall quality, but should i expect to see a noticeable boost in black coloring? The sony is terrible with the color black as the shades of black during dark movie scenes tend to blend making it difficult to see the detail of dark objects in dark scenes.

The sony is from 2004, is it safe to assume a significant improvement in the color black?

Thank you!

If the 844 blacks are anything like the 632 80" blacks are .
you will be more than happy
The blacks are great IMHO. It's also super bright even with low brightness and contrast. My room is super bright during the morning and TV shows up great. Quite amazing to me.

I was able to see motion blur on a baseball highlight but it went away once I set aqua motion setting to off. Not 120Hz low, 120 high, aqua120, or aqua240. Waiting for Masters coverage to see if it's gone on the golf ball. Not sure what this means...

I'm sitting about 12 feet away which just seems perfect no pixels are visible to me with good HD content.

I've been using "Standard" AV mode with the Suzook settings. I tried the Movie mode which allows color gamet settings but it didn't look as good so I'm staying with "Standard" until the ChadB calibration.

My opinions are based on watching a 7 year old 50" uncalibrated DLP so not best when it comes to critiquing.

Fastslappy did you buy the Sharp AQUOS LC-80LE844U ? I see you started the thread. If so how would compare the 622 to the 844U. I looked at a 622 the other day and the store did not set it up, it was just out of the box settings.
They were playing a football game. In wide shots the 622 looked fine however in close ups of players faces they were blown out. It did not look even and black weren't that good. I assume this can be corrected with changing the settings but I would imagine the 844U would have a better picture since it is an 8 series and not a 6 series.

I started the 844 thread when I was in the market for both Displays . At the time there was no 844 thread to discuss the display . I have since got a 632 80" . I myself can't discuss if the 844 is better than a 632 PQ wise. As I have not seen the 844 yet they were just released days ago. I got the 632 80" as it's price from US Appliance was just to good to pass on .
But going on what Sharps I have had , the Quatron is not something that I myself put alot of value on ( calibrators say the same thing as well) , I have not used 240Hz on my Sharp's in the past & I will not need that now with a 632 as other Sharp 240's I've had I turned it off anyway . It's feature that IMO is over-blown. Why would I pay extra for something I never would use .3D same story, the glasses give me a headache.
I am still thinking I might get a 844 as well ,but that all depends on the PQ & if there is a REAL noticeable difference .
That's why I ask for Photos , as there are others who are watching this thread also like me who want to see if the added price for a 844 is also a added value in PQ differences .
As for a store model 632 80" looking all blown out in PQ that is exactly what I seen @ Costco with the 1st viewing of a 632 80" by me .

Just set mine up. Replace a Panasonic 65pf9uk with this. I have not adjusted any settings yet. It is a very good picture. Blacks are very good. The picture is definitely softer than the Panasonic. I will need to work on some setting to see if I can get it sharper. Here's a few pics for you guys.

check that hockey image for DSE .... that's the image to see it on ...
when the camera pans left or right if you have any DSE it should show up as dirty patches that don't move with the camera
Most if not all the 632 80"ers don't have DSE & I don't expect the 844 does either .. it is a problem with some of the Elites
