IS this line still viable from the built in apps ? Or does it go though the menu bar when it is pressed? It is possible that it is caused by the source input but you can also try to reset the TV through the menu options. I did see some strange things on the TV a few nights ago. Looks like the Apps crashed and would not display. I could launch the ones on he shortcut buttons but not the from the menu. I had to do a software reset to get it working normal. The line on the right is close to where the right menu options would be so it could be a remnant of the menu.

Yes, it goes through the source apps. It first showed up while watching something on Youtube. I checked all of the inputs and the line is visible in all inputs....PS3, Comcast HD DVR, source apps, etc.

I did a software update 15 mins into turning on the tv. Could this have caused it? How do you do a software reset? I did the reset in the Initial Setup Menu...this is the reset that you were referring to?

I hate to say it but a reset won't help. The reset
Just is for the picture settings etc.

Ok...I'll just have to wait for the replacement. Until then, I'll still enjoy the picture and the size. Thanks for the replys.

Sorry mate. Defect rate for these tv's and size have been fairly low.

Called the Video Store and said that they never saw this before. One of the store employees said that it could be caused by the wall mount screws pressing on the back of the panel. I said, I didn't think that was the case. When I got home, I checked the line...16" from the edge. Wall mount brackets are 24" from the edge.

In any case, they are replacing the set...after 1 day. My replacement gets delivered in 2 weeks due to my work schedule.

So question to the forum members, have you seen this on a Sharp, let alone a 844?

That is obviously a major flaw and is not caused by the mount, certainly a defective set. At least they're not giving you a hard time about replacing it.

Finally got TV installed - mounted on a Chief PDR-UB bracket - screen "floats" flush with entertainment system - in the event that all 7 seats in the L shaped sofa are used I can extend the TV out further and angle the screen so everyone can view the "sweet spot". My normal viewing distance is around 10 feet but can add or subtract from that up to another foot depending on sofa placement.

Yours!

Since I have it installed I have been able to check out all the other capabilities of the set besides SAT. Played Blu-ray and 3 D blu-ray - 3D is really awesome - love how you can reset the backlight to a higher setting for 3D only so you can compensate for the slight darkness imparted by the glasses (always hate that in movie theaters) - watched a bit of Transformers and it actually was better than I remembered from the theater showing. Today, I am watching in a high ambient light setting - have the patio sliders open - no direct sunlight on screen but still a high level and there is no washout like with the DLP Mitsubishi. The kids love the graphics for XBOX and PS3 game system - Modern Warfare 3 looks awesome on this system.

The remote (as with the 632) is useless for controlling whole theater so I am using DirecTV remote - their (DirectTV's) new software allows you to download (into the remote) the proper codes for the TV and for the sound system automatically so I only need one remote to control everything.

I do have a spot in the Master Bedroom (similar built ins) where another one would fit perfectly - have to resist the urge.....

excellent.

You do know that the famous Kevin Miller is planning an ISF tour to central FL. I bet he could swing over to Sarasota.

And dont resist the urge.........

You know, I am not so sure about this professional calibration stuff - I know, I have invested a lot in this TV and spending another 3 or 4 hundred on professional calibration doesn't sound like much but I am really happy with the current settings. I feel that the settings issue is so subjective - "eye of the beholder" and all that - sure they can calibrate to some national standard but if it is all done and, in the long run, I really don't like the new settings for day to day viewing and just go back to the old settings then it would have been a waste of time and money.

I know the old adage about not knowing what you are missing and perhaps this does apply here. I assume your settings were with the help of a professional?

And if you bought a Ferarri and could add a nice boost in HP for short money wouldn't you :-)

I've had probably 10 panels done so yes I am.an advocate. However there are those that are so used to super bright torch mode viewing they have a hard time adjust to what is a properly adjusted set. With a panel.so big, I would say the effects would be even more pronounced.

You are probably right - I hate the "torch mode" but have tried "professional settings" on the Samsung ES8000 and found them to be really washed out. I have been doing HiDef video editing on a professional system (hobby but use professional cameras and editing stations) for over 7 years now and I do pay a lot of attention to white balance, gamma, proper contrast/brightness etc. I am constantly critiquing (in my mind) the mistakes that the local TV stations use in broadcasting as far as color, white balance etc.

I really like your settings in my current viewing environment - I am just wondering about how much better they could be with a professional calibrator.
the ES being an edge lit is probably one of the major reasons you couldnt get a good result. While the settings I provide to work, they are not in the end probably the absolute best the set could deliver. The discovery of ISF day night options in the 844 could be the deciding factor. Chad B, another ISF guy discovered this and did an ISF day setting for a very bright location then a movie mode for night.

However like many things in life, if it aint broke..........

I agree with you completely. I too am a profession editor and videographer and I very focused on PQ. I had the Sony Qualia 006 and had it professionally calibrated and within a day went back to my own settings.
It was too washed out and warm and looked anemic. I have been debating getting the 844 80" and the Elite 70" and I bought the Elite. I had it professionally calibrated before it was sent to me, I spent an additional amount to have it done, both day and night settings. Within 2 hours I was back to my own setting....it too was washed out and too warm.
But thats just me and most who have their sets calibrated absolutely love it.
To me however it is not the 'holy grail.
I will probably be burned at the AVSforum stake.

I don't think anyone will.burn you at the stake..i just believe in the ISF process. If you don't that's more than.cool

I have only had my new 844 running yesterday and today and didn't notice this initially (but now I do all the time) - was watching hockey with half of the screen white due to ice and I noticed a large lighter area in the lower part of the screen with white lines outlining it - also noted 2 small triangular shaped (1" on the side) darker areas - one on the lower right part of the screen and one almost in the center about an inch up from the bottom - present on all inputs - called Sharp Aquos service and they had me go through a reboot process and it still showed up. They are going to have me send in pics - sounds like I get a replacement!

Anyone else seen this on other LCD's?

Attaching pics - you can see the V shaped area near CUP in the lower left part of the pic and then a small triangle about an inch away and then on the right hand lower corner another triangle.

Still love the set but another hassle to go through.

just as this set is just being released into the "wild" seems to "me" that there are way more Issues with the 844 than were reported than when the 632 hit the streets ... not a formal poll or anything , but in the 1st weeks there are more problem reports with the 844 than the whole 6+ months the 80" 632 has been out .. Just a thought ...

Please post pics and impressions.]

Does the settings of suzook for the 632 works for the 844?[/quote]

As far as I know they do.
Specifically mentions a newly developed 240 panel. And is obviously quattron. Sorry but no way is this the same innards as the 632. The quattron alone makes it different. Whether the 240 is processing or native I believe remains to be seen. In the 945 manuals someone pointed out that there are two different 240 settings. Something like just '240' and another like '240 motion' the latter implying processing.

They quattron adds the fourth pixel. Beyond that they are both full array. Many will.argue the merits or non.value of the 240.

There are at least two who have transferred settings from the 632 to the 844. But if they don't work for you by all means try something else

That looks like a crack to me. Atleast thats what my sammy I sent back looked like when the inside glass was cracked. Have you shut off the tv and then took a flashlight and looked at it ? I hope I am wrong about this.

god bless

Finally got it up and running and here are a few shots of the setup. Not sure if this shows the PQ, but I am playing Avatar in Bluray.

The PQ is amazing when watching bluray movies, however, when watching regular HD movies or HDTV, the PQ is not amazing, but is still great. The worst PQ of all is probably while watching sports such as NBA or NHL.

Sure you can plug in any settings. If the picture looks better, great. If not you can always go back to your old settings......

thanks Tony!

I purposely bought Hugo in 3D to test out the 3D technology and I have to say I am pretty amazed. No dizziness for the 10 minutes I watched it, so I'm pretty impressed.
