Official Sharp AQUOS LC-60LE945U & LC-70LE945U owners thread - Page 8

sounds like youve dealt with a pro calibrator..what length of time does it take the set to get worse, you talking a yr or 5 or more yrs? What is Diff about the 735u,I read it has som degree of full array dimming, but not local dimming,is this the only diff? Why didnt sharp make a 2012 ver of this tv if it was really better than the 8 series?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I don't know if this means anything, but the costco 70C8470U is now being heavily discounted down to $2480. I paid $2800 2 months ago and I thought that was low. Wonder if that means sharp's trying to close out the 84* models in prep for the 94*'s? We can only hope.

there have been alot of returns of the 847 due to clouding , so yeah they might be closing out that model

Wow, now Costco.com doesn't even sell the 70" 8470 on its website. The LC-70C6400U and the 60" 8470 are available though. Wonder what that means?

I still see the 70C8470U on the site:

It is hidden... has been for weeks if not ever.... you can only get it to it by following the buy now link at the Samsung website.

That link is WRONG... Its for a 640 unit. And yes, it's gone... There is no longer a Buy Now button on the Sharp Website for the Costco version of the 8470U. You can only now get it at BJs or Sam's. They took it down about 3 days ago I imagine, after the 2 free glasses/$400 off promotion expired. And there has been no price reduction... Attention to detail folks, very important.
good catch flavius...
They dont have the 840u on the website but they still have it in the store and it is more expensive now that the rebate has expired, its 3100 there now...really strange to see costco higher than places like hhgreg, they are still at 2999

I like my edge-lit 70LE845.
What generic complaint do you have for the edge-lit technology?
My TV doesn't dislpay any flashlighting artifacts at all.
The brightness is uniform.
The white LED light source sucks, but that is not unique to edge-lit...
on a low stimulus black background there will be areas that are brighter and show through on real content. typically it's in the corners but can be on edges as well. The room must be darkened also like during critical viewing.

Edge-Lit Sharps are simply horrible ... I returned mine right away! Horrible colors, blacks and uniformity, but the main thing that lead me to return this set was the unbearable Ghosting / Halo effect on sports.

I would in no way shape or form ever recommend and edge-lit LED ... especially this one.

I had huge high hopes for it when I got it home and within an hour or viewing It was gone ... I kept it for over a week trying Everything I could (settings, calibration, etc. etc.) to save it but nothing could be done unfortunately.

I want full rear-array (like my current 55" LED which has zero of these issues) LED in the 65'70" range but three is nothing out there unfortunately.

This is a known issue if you do some searching.

I am SOOO mad they haven't released this yet or even said anything about this 900 series!!!
It's an LCD TV -- how much can you expect?
My biggest beef with all these sets is the white LED source of backlight.
The color balance is totally messed up. Until they have a breakthrough on full-spectrum backlighting, I won't worry about light bleed.
I have no uniformity problems and the light bleed is evenly distributed -- no flashlighting at all. Good 3D effects. I just hate the white LEDs.
The brightness is skewed so far to the blue and will only get worse with age...

Ya I know you take the good with the bad on and LCD / LED panel ... and I would have no doubt kept the tv and made it work color wise etc. etc. ... but the Ghosting and Halo effect it had on sports was so unbearable I could hardly even watch an episode of sportscenter without going completely nuts! If this wasn't a problem I would have kept it for sure! It had and incredible picture on Bluray and 3D and most often then not no ghosting on most HD programs (though I saw some now and then more that I would liked). After time calibrating and tweaking this set it would have fit the bill for me since my main goal was to go bigger ... but the Halo stuff was a complete No Go and it just had To Go!

Now I'm on the hunt for a set that's not edge-lit (cause I have read the halo effect has a lot to do with this crappy technology) and is in the 65-70" range I am looking for ... and this 900 series would fit the bill Prefect ... but of course the one tv in my size, with what I want, and potentially will have great picture (based on it being the closest thing to the elite) it seems like this damn tv is just never to come to fruition!

I wish they at least say something like it's not gonna be released ... something!!!

Let's not mislead folks. With an instrument and software, the blue can be easily tamed (assuming you use the warmest preset), on grayscale to D6500K and close enough for the primaries using CMS. Secondaries dial in easily also.

My complaint with the 847/8470 70'' is the corner clouding/flashlighting. I agree with others in this forum though that it does seem to reduce in intensity over time. No, I'm not just getting used to it.

Best,
jeff

With IFA 2012 now finished and no mention of Sharp's 900 series would this signal the death nail for the series or is there still hope? I was almost sure Sharp would come out and say something but as the saying goes "the silence is deafening". And it's not like Sharp wasn't present, they showed off a few Aquos displays, mainly focusing on the 90" unit and new technology like IGZO displays (small low powered hi-res displays), but not a single word about the 945. cool.gif

I have to agree it looks like nothing till CES
post #229 of 302
I know not to believe everything that comes out of the CES every year, but when a company publishes on their letterhead all the upcoming models for the year with the specs and release dates, these companies should be required to provide an update, if and when the release dates come and go.

We are now in September, and in spite of Sharp's current financial state, it is not too much to ask for a short statement that the 945 series has been delayed to a new "X" date of release, or, that the model has been canceled.

Sharp must be in more of a financial and personnel disarray than what is being pubished.

Well CEDIA is coming this week so maybe there is still hope! has anyone pm'd D-nice lately to see if he had any info on this or a new Elite? I have been waiting for the new Sharps or Sonys to buy a new tv and the longer the wait goes the more I will lean towards staying Plasma and jumping on the VT50

The 65ES8000 Samsung has also seemed to cease production going by Amazon and Crutchfield availability. And still no news of 945U. This is just terrible. I may have to go with 70LE8470U from Costco despite all the complaints about it.
If they are still silent then that either means they have no plans for production or the outcome is undetermined. It's possible even the top brass and Sharp doesn't know for sure. It could be one of those cases where you could ask 5 different top execs at Sharp who are "in the know" and get 5 different answers. As was mentioned, their financial problems could be taking precedent and the model is not really cancelleed but in complete limbo indefinitely.

Don't Do It !!!!!!!!!!

I had mine for 24 hours and was ready to take it back! I am still using my old 55" Vizio XVT Rear Array LED and it is WAY better then that 8470 was BY FAR!

I've got money in savings burning a hole in it waiting for a new tv 65" or higher but have found nothing that will fit the bill for me ... and that Sharp 8470 was For Sure not gonna be the TV I watch for years to come!

Hold out ... and don;t make a mistake of getting this model.
Well with it being September now, I think we can confirm this model was canned pre-release frown.gif

You're the only reason I haven't bought this TV. I will trust you. The last time I didn't believe the one guy who said a TV was terrible (Samsung plasma).... well I bought it, and the guy was SPOT ON CORRECT.

Same here. Chad B commented in the HX950 thread that after he saw it at CEDIA it looks very promising. Just hope Canadian retail pricing will be in line with the US ($5500 for the 65").

Chris , make sure you get Chad a HX950 as soon as humanly possible. Chad said in that thread he hopes he gets one to review, and I assume a lot of people will be looking for it as well with Sharp not having anything new

I'd rather deal with Sharp than Sony but I think I will have to look closer at the 950 now as well. It's a shame too because the 945 Sharp was projected to have an MSRP of $4400 for the 70"while this one will be a firm 5500 for the 65". I'm not sure why Sharp is playing these games with this set. If they dont intend on producing this model just say so instead of dragging it out indefinitely.

The main thing I hate about Sony is if you get a bad set and want to exchange it, their policy is to give you a refurb. One that likely was never fixed in the first place.
