Official Sharp AQUOS LC-60LE847U & LC-70LE847U Owners Thread - Page 9

The bottom of mine is currently about 28" above the floor and parallel to the wall (it's on a TV "bench") Even at that relatively low mounting height I want to tilt the screen down about 10°. If your viewing distance is within 15', I would strongly advise an articulated mount.

Thank you CC I am going to try those settings! I am clearly the least knowledgeable person participating in this forum, which also means I am therefore getting the biggest benefit! Again, I am not using the exact same set I have the 60 inch.

I have not even attempted to view 3D yet. I am using old school HDMI cables. Hopefully my Monoprice high speed HDMI cables are here by Friday, until then I am waiting I do not want to taint my first ever 3D experience.

One piece of advice...if you put a DVD in you do not need to tweak one setting in my opinion! When I put a DVD in my TV switches to "standard" automatically and displays a seemingly flawless picture. IF anything, when it comes to movies and TV if I had one criticism it is that things are too clear, motion too smooth, it is almost unnatural and makes things seem kind of like a CGI reality not actual people and actual sets. I think this is because I have been watching my 2007 Vizio 42 inch before this and I didn't realize how dramatically the technology has shifted!
CC do you watch DVDs in standard mode or everything in "movie"?
For those who want a little less complicated set up, I think I stumbled on a pretty good set up too for the more basic at heart. This is my setting for cable TV and I may adopt it for DVD too. Blue Ray looks absolutely SICK on this TV!

Here is my settings:

Model: LC-60LE845U
AV Mode - Standard
OPC - OFF
Backlight - +13
Contrast - +32
Brightness - 0
Color - +5
Tint - 0
Sharpness - -1
CMS Hue, Saturation and Value - No adjustment completely neutral
Color Temp - High (my jury is still out on this). Before my screen was a little pale, now it's a little warm... probably should turn on 10 point adjustment but as of now I have not.
Motion Enhancement - 240hz (this fixed a lot of the "cgi effect")
Active Contrast - ON
Gamma - +1

I would be interested to hear what the opinions are for those who try these settings, especially if you start here and then improve upon it!

Lucky, I'm guessing the unnatural motion is caused by the "film mode" being turned on.

I normally have three settings: gaming, day, and night. The differences between them are minor. So far I have only worked on my night and game settings. Those get used the most. Day setting is mostly a weekend thing for me. Eventually I'll mess with the the OPC to try and let the set mediate day/night, but my experience with these is less than positive.
Yes I am very leery of the OPC. I will be anxious to hear your thoughts. I have changed my mind once again. I reworked my set up got rid of the glitchy motion and too sharpness. It could possibly be a touch warmer. Part of my problem is I am seeking a universal setting. I actually think I stumbled on a happy medium:

Mode - Standard so same settings for movie and TV.
OPC - Off
Backlight - +16
Contrast - +32
Color - +5
Tint - -5
Sharpness - -1
CMS all neutral
Color Temp - Middle 10 pt settings neutral
Motion Enhancement 240Hz
Active Contrast ON (this I may change)
Gamma - +1

Thanks cg gorman! I am going tomorrow to buy my set, and I have decided on the 847u. Great pics, and a blu ray will be even better? Can't wait to see it with your settings. Your help has been tremendous, and much more in depth than I could ever get from a salesperson. One last question for you...have you tried out the 3d aspect of the set? At Paul's they come with 2 free pair of glasses and my kids would love to see "the lion king" in 3d (plus many more of course). Thanks again.
Yes, we have played with the 3D briefly. With a good source and some tweaking the experience is about the same as that found in the theatre. Black Ops on PS3 is not so good while Grand Turismo 5 is excellent.

2D to 3D conversion is better than I expected when I tried it with Transformers 3 (2D disc).

I haven't actually put in a 3D movie yet, but I expect similar results as that from the games.

The 2D setting on the glasses works flawlessly.

Personally, I don't care for the 3D effect in movies. Not in the theatre and not at home...but GT5 was compelling. I have two teen aged boys and I don't see the glasses getting used except for occasional gaming or when friends come over.

The glasses themselves are comfortable. The earpieces are thin and there are two sizes of silicone nose pads included. I have a high and wide nose bridge and find most cheap sunglasses irritating in that area. The Sharp glasses are pretty decent. I wish they weren't so wide as they reflect a lot from behind you. Goggles would be better, IMO. If I get bored I may fab up some side shields to help.

What model glasses do you have CC?
AN3DG20B. 2 pair included with display from Cleveland Plasma.

Regardless, my own personal numbers will be up for all in a short while.

I am guessing there could be some professional secrets not to be revealed but I believe the major issue with sharing settings is that they hardly ever are universal.

I always was under the assumption that calibrations should be done with your specific setup, each video device (DVD, PS3, HTPC, cablebox) should be individually calibrated to account for differences in each's output.

Since each device can be different, even the same model... shared settings are just a starting point.

I agree, but intend to err in the side of caution.

Hey Lucky!!!! Any settings that you enjoy are the best settings imho.

While yes there is a "true" calibration in which most video is actually intended to be viewed... still no one is an expert at what you enjoy... except YOU.

Honestly my last TV, I ran all the disks and filter and what not... intended to hire calibration but never got around to it. I still had to tweak settings to my preference.

Happy viewing... now I have to figure out how many collectable's I will have to sell to replace my 58" panny plasma

For sure, only proper respect in this digital age.

Just wanted to point out, that even if you did, probably wouldn't be that helpful.

Hi all. When you are right you are right. This forum continues to educate me! I am an enthusiast but aspire to reach the level of advanced novice eventually. You are very much right what suits your eye suits your eye. Also, every set is different as are its input devices and the environment the set is in.

I know my TV may change as I break it in the first 100 hours. I know it may look different when I hook up new high speed HDMI cables. I also know as per CG he is right, day and night settings are needed. I think the set looks wonderful the way it is calibrated in a dark room but not so hot in the bright sunny day. My house gets extremely bright incidentally. Lastly, I know I will obsess over this until whatever it is in my eye and my brain clicks and I can be at peace with my settings! Right now I think about it and tweak and retweak it almost obsessively. I can't wait to feel like "this is how I am going to live with it for a while before even considering any further adjustment". Every night I think I am there and then every afternoon I begin to question it all over again.

I think in a way this is the fun part, learning about it only makes sense since we invest so much money in it... but another part of me thinks why can't they just install 10 different ideal calibrations and encourage you to choose the one you like best and let that be that...or at least give it base settings that look good to most and only require minor adjustment. If I am sure of one thing, coming out of the box the TV is calibrated horribly, every set of settings I have tried has been dramatically better than when it came out of the box and I say that knowing full well some of my initial calibrations were way off.

Hey CGG,

Thanks so much for providing all of your feedback, much appreciated buddy.

Do you have any "Daytime" settings you wanna share also ;-)

Regards
My daytime settings are just a boost in backlight to 40-50 fL, drop of gamma to around 2.0-2.2, and adjustment of brightness/contrast. Haven't built the calibration yet, but most of the data is there. Just need to re-test the gamma presets and see how the curves look after Monday's settings.

Is anyone else noticing an intermittant delay between picture and sound on this TV?
On my 70LE847 the sound keeps getting up to half a second out of sync with the picture. This set was a replacement for a 2011 Sharp 70LE732 set which did not exhibit this issue in almost a year using the same setup.
If I toggle the input on the TV through the sources, it fixes the sync or if I change the channel on the cable box then back it also fixes the sync. This is happening at least a couple of times a day while watching Time Warner Cable via HDMI from their set top box.
Using the TVs internal speakers only.

thx

Rich

Sync is fine for me, but I don't use the internal speakers.
Has anyone called Sharp to find out if there was any difference between the 5 and 7?
Ok by looking at picture adjustments and motion enhancement from each models manual it looks like everything is the same except that the 5 does not have Quad Pixel Plus 2. Is this a very large disadvantage?
I can't speak to the specific processing differences between 845 and 847, but the difference between quad pixel settings on my 847 are extremely subtle. I have to be within 2' of the screen to see a difference. At that distance the advanced setting reduces shimmer/rainbow on the edges of high contrast areas, but at the expense of some sharpness and color accuracy. At my regular viewing distance of 12' I can't tell at all, so turned it off.
Does anyone know it the 70LE847U supports ARC over a 1.4 hdmi cable?
Yes. On HDMI input 1.
HDMI 4 supports MHL
Has there been a good comparison between the backlit 70LE735 (now on closeout at some good prices) or teh nearly the same price 847 edge lit? I am curious given the uniforminity of the backlighting whether in the "real world" the picture is as good or better?
Your real world is different from mine, but the 735 I spent some time with had noticeable DSE and Dark Corners in regular program material. As a PC monitor it was also splotchy on full fields of light color. My 847 exhibits none of that...at the expense of a little ultimate brightness...that I don't need...
That was helpful. I too use it as a PC monitor, wireless keyboard, gamepad STEAM/XBOX etc in a light controlled "cave"
Just got the 70 845 and it seems to slant a bit forward on the stand, is this normal?
