laying a display down to mount the stand is WAY different than transporting a display while it's laying flat ..

+1

I agree, they are not supposed to be laid flat during shipping or transport. Laying it flat in your home where there is no movement so that you may install the base would not be anywhere near the same as a bumpy ride home.
When I got mine from BB I asked about laying it flat for the ride home and they freaked out. They told me just last week a customer took one home flat, hit a bump and the glass shattered. We had to work a bit harder to get it upright in the van but it was worth it.

Seems the glass on the larger screens is not supported in the middle and will flex if flat, hit a bump and bang, there she goes.

Laying the TV flat does not ruin it. Dropping it, while upright or flat, probably will ruin it .

Thank you, my family is really enjoying our new set. I'm hoping you will enjoy yours too. They really are beautiful sets.

As you quoted above, installing a stand in your own home without the tv being moved has nothing to do with the what the box states.

It states do not lay flat while transporting, not installing a stand!!

Sharp even states in their manual that you can lay flat while installing a stand. The Box is for transportation. Like apples and oranges my friend.

Anyway moving on, I am glad that you like your new TV. This set really rocks. I love watching it now. I just bought a Harmony One remote and connected everything to it one remote includung my soundbar. Now I can control all my 6 devices with one unit. That is exciting in itself.

Correct my friend, that is what I have been warning people about for a week now. Laying them flat will break the unit. I dont care how big the bump, pot hole or speed bump you hit. The glass is very heavy. Since the TV is only 1-2 inches thick, when you hit a bump the internal components inside the tv will hit the glass as it flexes and bends. All it takes is one hit, bump or fall. I know for experience.

Far to often I hear many stories about TVs set getting crack or broken while transporation, such as myself. Also, this is not covered under warranty and the stores wont take it back. Good luck trying. They dont have to take them back and Sharp wont cover this under their factory warranty. I have asked and was denied.

has anyone tried out the 3d movie drive angry on their 847u yet? I have heard that it is a good source of various 3d effects and I am thinking about getting one when I get my set.

3D rocks. I tried this the second day I got my set. 3D totally rocks. After I saw it for 2 hours, I had a headache, but a GOOD Headache, well worth it.

What are the best 3D glasses for the Aquos 847Us?

I really like the ones that came with the Sharp. They work perfect, lightweight and are rechargable. Once charge last 30 hours of viewing and 20 days on stand by. They are awesome.

These from Amazon are also good: Sharp Recommends this one

I have these and yes, they're good. What do you mean by 20 days of standby? Is that with the glasses in the off position? I think the switch is 2d/3d/off.

In the 3d position. I was reading online about this 20-30 days on stand by mode in 3d/2d mode and 40-60 days in the off position. I have not tested this out, since I didnt have my TV this long, but it is posted every where I read.

I will run a full test and report back here.

It's funny because the employees at HHGregg were all telling me it was fine to take it home laying flat. Granted it was mainly because I live less than 2 miles from the store. I was very concerned about this and didn't feel comfortable at all. They kept reassuring me it would be fine so I loaded it up and proceeded to slowly drive to the house. Luckily the little stretch of road I had to cover was free of potholes/bumps and the TV made it home safely. After reading the last few posts, though, you've made me sufficiently paranoid that I would never attempt this again.

Good call, never again!!! JK LOL You got lucky. I hear many stories that these TVs break even driving in a parking lot over a speed bump at 5MPH. These tv's are very sensitive. They are very heavy and you dont want that weight on your screen.
Im glad that yours was good. Its not worth the risk and stress.

FYI: The employees at HHGregg are not educated enough for these TV's. Not to offend anyone. Just my 2 cents.

I have to agree with this statement. HHGREGG told me i could move it by laying it flat, store manager included.... I choose to move/ship my TV myself because I rarely trust others to do a better job then I can. This was reaffirmed when they had the TV on its side whipping it around on there dolly in the store. Had to bite my tongue there. I shipped mine upright in an brand new enclosed trailer and used foam pool noodles to dampen any vibration during travel.

If u don't have the means or common sense to move such a big expensive TV then pay somebody that has insurance to move it.

Just one comment on this one: I do agree with you, however, paying someone to move your TV doesnt guarantee that your TV will brought to you not dropped. Trust me I know from experience, I paid $400.00 for white glove service and all I got was a dirty glove slap in the face broken TV in the end.
You're fooling yourself if you think the TV you get at BB or HHGregg wasnt shipped or transported flat at some point in it's journey to get to the retail store where you bought it.

The loading and shipping carriers who drove the gigantic stacked up pile of TV's to Bestbuy to put them on the shelves definitely didnt take the care you are driving it home. You think they are avoiding potholes and driving 5mph to make sure the merch gets there OK... highly unlikely.

My point exactly. That is why I bought mine from Costco. Here is how Costco ship their TV's. I talked to the manager of Costco and the Sales regional manager at Sharp that sales these TV's to Costco, and Sams club, since the models are different than the street models.

Coming from Sharp in Mexico: All these TV's are strapped to a pallet. 4 TV's on a pallet. They are all strapped to the pallet with 4 white straps and 3 straps all tied around all four of the TV's. Each TV unit itself (single box) then has 2 straps around the box. They are always upright and never lay down. He told me that he was sure of this. I beleive them. I acutally see these TV's at my local Costco and no way are they laid flat. Impossible with how they are strapped and wrapped.

NO, Until everyone last one of us and the merchants understands that you can not lay these boxes flat!!!

LOL, JK. YEAH Im done. I was only like this because what they did to me. I still have the broken TV in my house all because of shipping. What a pain that they put me through. You have no idea. See the pics.
OK DEAD subject, MOVING ON!!!

Am I the only one the keeps accidently pushing the red Netflix button instead of the down or up arrow to move around the settings box?

(subtle change of subject,,,,,,,,,,,,,)
I'm seriously considering cutting that button off... less than worthless.

My Logitech Harmony One doesn't have a Netflix button.

I'm still looking for a proper HTPC remote. The Xyboard didn't work out as I'd hoped and the Rii mini isn't learning capable.

My Harmony One has a Netflix button. The Red hard button is programed so under the Netflix Activity. I never "accidentally" hit it because it only works in the Netflix Activity.

Have you tried any of the Harmony remotes? The last PC I built had a remote and that motherboard was already in Harmony's database, as is my Panasonic aircon. The Harmony's are also learning remotes. I taught it the commands for the blue light behind my 70" in the pictures above. I put together a control box from a Home Depot ceiling fan light remote controller/dimmer.

Not Harmony, but I've got a couple Prontos. A Neo and a Pro NG. They are fine for regular home theatre and home automation but without trackpad and keyboard, they fall short on the PC front.

I know, I'm asking for a lot.
