just gotta play the game by their rules. select a dark scene like a star field or cave or pretty much any scene from an Underworld title

pitch black

GAMING SETTINGS

I picked sRGB color space for the gamut along with video levels (16-235).
Max luminance is about 60 ftL and gamma is set to 2.0
Sharp seems to have locked in a wide gamut for this mode. I couldn't get the green color point dialed back quite enough to measure in-spec, but for video games I figure its more than close enough. Gran Turismo 5 looks good.

I sacrificed some black level for additional luminance at the bottom end. This is how my boys prefer it for darker games like Skyrim or Nazi Zombies

Since we play in all ambient lighting conditions, I thought I would try OPC. Seems to work OK so far.

CGGorman on your settings for Movie dark room you have motion enhance set to 240. I think Chad had calibrated at 120. When I set motion enhance to 240 my picture dims and there is a loss of punch and brightness, how does 240 effect your set?
Same thing happens. I just turn up the backlight to compensate. It makes no measureable difference to contrast ratio and I feel slow pans are slightly smoother. Opening scene of Dark Knight, for instance. The buildings' window frames and various small details seem to flicker less and exhibit less moire. Its subtle, I admit.
I know that many of you do not like the soap opera effect, but I like the "realism" of it, especially on some of the recently shot sitcoms and movies.

Does anyone have any recommended settings to maximize this effect? I think right now I have the backlight and contrast at max. It appears to work best with all setting switched off, but I'm afraid I'm losing some of the qualities of owning a Quattron. I usually keep my settings the same day and night.

I appreciate your insight.
Soap opera effect is created almost exclusively by turning ON "film mode"

What is a 55lm8600?

how did you guys perform the installation of the stand without laying the panel flat face down?

I am curious since people here have said that laying the panel horizontal can cause damage.

Thanks

OH, ok, I get it. I didnt read your post right. I did see that you wanted a sharp. My bad. Well, happy hunting for a Sharp. These units rock especially if you get a sound system and harmony one remote. I am very happy with my set up. Well pleased with the 8470U model.
cjre1, So do you have any issues with bleeding, flashlighing? Or does anyone else have problems like that with Sharp panels looking at the 60le847u how is the 3d...Haven't really looked at Sharps that much at best buy...And cnet isn't really giving any new TV good ratings besides the Elites, Any help would be great thanks
post #677 of 2439
I have my set calibrated and have since realized the clouding is too distracting. It sounds like some are working with Sharp on their clouding issues. Does anyone know what Sharp typically does to resolve the issue?
HyperC, most reports agree that Sharp's current crop of 3D sets have about the best 3D performance currently available. The 847 has not shown any flashlighting or halos, nor dirty screen effect, but there are issues with clouding. In most cases, it seems Sharp is pretty agreeable when it comes to replacing units that exhibit objectionable clouding.

If ultimate picture quality in the 60" class is your goal, I'd suggest taking a very serious look at plasma. They are not as bright and consume more energy, but still stand on top of the pile when it comes to PQ.

I was in contact with Sharp's customer service last week regarding the clouding I was having with my panel. They told me to take pics of live tv but nothing on a still white background which I thought was odd...but I did it anyway.

They ended up sending a tech too solve the issue which he couldn't. So he took his own pics and sent them to Sharp as well. Sharp said that none of their panels are 100% but it wasn't a manufacturing issue (which made no sense to me). They said they were going to replace the set with a new one which will be a 60LE847U.
Do they always send a tech out if you complain of clouding? I was sent the email also and thought it was strange they did not want any pictures that would really show clouding but I am sending dark scene pictures anyway.

They did send one in my case but I can't say wether or not this is common practice. I'd certainly send whatever pics you have and I'm sure they will do something for you. I was shocked when they said they were going to replace my tv

You shouldn't be shocked as that is Sharp's standard policy is to replace the unit , That is one reason Sharp has a great rep on warranty service , why the extended warranty is highly rated by Sharp owners . Sharp does take care of it's Display owners . They will bring a new Display, box up the old & you will have a new display with the least amount of hassle .

I had clouding in my 835U last years model. All I did was take pictures of the clouding in dark scenes and they agreed to replace it. If I wanted a refurbished unit, I could have received another 835U. I did not want someone else's problem so I asked to upgrade to the 2012 847U. Other than the shipper who Sharp contracts the delivery company to, they were horrible and dropped my TV during the "white glove" service. The TV was dropped at about 2 feet high on to carpet, front first thankfully. The delivery people were like, "what ever... It happens and these TVs are tough." I was shocked and told them to take the TV and leave. However, the policy is to plug it in and if it performs or functions to standard, there is not a lot you can do.

I do have minor clouding on my TV. I have watched Thor and it is barely noticeable. Dark Knight looks good as well. Far better than my 2011 835U. I have not taken the time to really adjust the picture either.

The only problem that I do have is lip sync seems to be off more often than should be watching though Verizon FIOS and utilizing TV speakers.

Sharp has agreed to send a contracted company out to take a look.

Overall, minus my TV being dropped and Sharp not doing anything about it, I'm satisfied.

HyperC,

I do not have any issues with bleeding or flashlighting at all on my set. Here is the break down of my research and what I have seen personally.

70C8470U, I have seen 9 sets at different stores and 1 have this effect.
70LE847U, I have seen about 10 sets at different stores and 8 out of 10 have both effects as you state.
60LE847U, I have seen 6 of these at different stores and all 6 have the effects.
80LE632U, I have seen 5 of them and all 5 have these effects.
80LE844U, I have seen 7 of them and 4 out of the 7 have both effects.

I hope this helps. Either way, no model is 100% clear of the effects, however, the model that has the fewest issues is the 70C8470U.

Word of advice, at that point, I would of not signed the delivery and refuse the box. Trust me on this, I already had this happen to me, however, I didnt see them drop my TV. I dont care where their dropped the TV. Under carpet is conrete. I am glad that your TV works. I hope it doesnt go out.

I have a line traveling top to bottom through the 1st quarter of the screen (starting from the left). It is there regardless of input (sat, PS3, DVD) and I am running a single HDMI through a Denon AV. Nothing has been moved/changed. Line "just appeared".
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Do you know when Chad is going to put his review up? I am torn between this and the Panny plasmas.
