Say what? Are you asking if full field white has been brightened because I don't know the definition of "crystal white"? If so, the answer is no.

BTW, white is defined as x.0327 y.3290 per HD (BT709) and SD (SMPTE-C) specifications.

Hey D-Nice, a followup to the FBr question. I guess I'd like to know what "rare" means. The main (possibly only) thing I'll use the set for is movies. No hockey, basketball, or other stuff with which people tend to experience the FBr more readily. Now I know this isn't a cut and dry issue so I don't expect a precise answer, but in your best estimation how often will I notice the fluctuations with typical movie watching? Thanks.

D-Nice,

you mentioned that banding is still present on ST50. Is there any visible improvement or it's the same as in 2011? And posterisation / phosphor trailing?

I don't know. Your eyes are not tied to my brain so I can't evaluate what your eyes can or cannot see I saw FBr on Sunday with source material sent via DirecTV. Zero FBr on the reference display (PRO-101FD) with the same material.

I know you are asking D-Nice, but thought I would chime in over this. I returned my S30 because I could not stand the FBr issue. I felt I was very sensitive to it and it would happen frequently. Like you, I am more concerned about movies (on blu ray player), and that is where I saw the FBr. I exchanged for an ST30, which Panasonic created a patch for. I have watched several movies on the ST30 at this point and I have yet to see any FBr. This means that their fix was a drastic improvement. I doubt they ignored the issue when they created the 2012 models I just don't want to see you steer clear of the excellent picture that I am enjoying over this huge FBr issue, which is actually no longer much of a concern at all.

Posterization and color banding means the same thing to me. Since I do not have a 2011 available to use in the comparision, I really don't know how it truly compares to the 2011 line. If it has been reduced and I had to guess by how much, I would say 10-15%. I don't see phosphor lag on any PDP, so I cannot answer that part of your question.

At this point I think this should be classified as a "Panasonic trait" as it has been plaguing their displays for as long as I can remember.

I need you or someone else to translate this post. What does "crisper" mean? Bluer white? Brighter white? A combination of both?

Brighter white whichs doesn't look dim or dark compared Samsung.

On the ST50 I have, white measured 16.7fL on a 100% full field white pattern with a panel brightness of Mid. I have not measured High but I would not expect it to be that much brighter, if it actually is brighter on that paticular pattern. I have yet to measure a Samsung that does anything over 18fL on the same pattern.

Again as hes stated, the dimness appearance is all settings based. Straight out of the box with little or no tweaking the 2011 samsungs were brighter in appearance compared to panasonics. Once properly calibrated, both 2011 brands had similar brightness in appearance. See HDTV Shootout for a better explanation. The 2012 panasonics resemble a similar out of box brightness to the 2011 samsungs out of the box but calibrate even higher, i believe, than what the 2011 brands were at.
Hmm. I wonder how a similar-sized, calibrated ST50 would stack up against a calibrated VT30? De facto Day/Night modes (Custom/Cinema?) vs. ISF modes?

D-nice the st50 Fbr can be reduced over time or via software update to zero? It's more hardware or software ?
Maybe someone should start a separate FBR tread so we don't have to fill this thread up with the same 5 FBR questions over and over again.

Ask Panasonic

Obviously the brightness would be similar when calibrated for the same environment. My point was that the 2011 samsungs COULD get brighter if they needed to, depending on the environment, while the panasonics maxed out at a fairly low peak brightness.

And you are STILL wrong! I will make this very simple....

The 2011 Samsungs were not brighter nor could they "get brighter" than the 2011 Panasonics.

Ha, another common Myth/ Excuse/ Weakness of Plasma

You see that's WHITE - not Dark , or OFF yellow, or tanned tinted white , Panny Plasma's do a terrible TERRIBLE job of reproducing real White, I don't care what your Test kit says.

From what i can see from d-nice answers to us i can only conclude thet samsung plasma d8000 is better value for money then st50.

I'm not sure how you came that conclusion since I never anything that could create such a conclusion.

Excuse of plasma?

Anyone who knows spit about video will tell you white is defined as x.03127 y.3290. That white applies to EVERY SINGLE DESPLAY TECHNOLGY used to display BT709 and SMPTE-C color images. This is a video science forum. I suggest you LEARN the science of video before popping off an ignorant post. Then again, I expect nothing more than what you have done with a username of RicFlair

Wow D-Nice is on a roll today. I've gotta admit it's been funny seeing D-Nice put these clowns who think they know about Plasma's to shame

Didn't Cleveland plasma get a set in for review last friday? ChadB was on his way over for a calibration, and haven't heard anything since.

I want to know how many people are sending you money.

That sounds like a good business!

For you mathematically challenged folks, the difference between 18 and 16.7 is that the former (that's the big one) is 7.7% brighter. In other words, not much.

I don't care what the numbers say , Plasma white is NOT white - it's white with grey tint - every guy who knows spit about Plasma will tell you the same.

Panny Plasma, any make or model G25 etc, will bleed red onto a sheet of Hockey white ice - the screen tints red.

This is undeniable fact; in fact it's science.

Perhaps they are taking their time? Nothing wrong with that.
