I wouldn't worry too much about this if I were you... I purchased an ST50 for my Dad the week they became available (replaced a tired but faithful 10 year old DLP) and have watched a bunch of hockey on it.

IMO, this "flicker" is simply the TV doing its best to reproduce the photo/camera strobes as they go off in the arena... it just doesn't do it very well. As reference, I own a Kuro FD101 and watch a ton of hockey on that and see the same "flicker" when the arena camera strobes go off... it does it a bit better as it appears to be more of the expected white flash but it also "flickers".

Of course, I could be all wrong about this.

I've noticed that same black flicker on custom mode, though admittedly I've only watched a couple minutes of hockey so far. I get that same feeling that the tv is just having a hard time with those strobes. The question is, is this common on all plasmas? I thought I remember reading about the same "hockey flicker" on the Samsung threads but for all I know it could be an entirely different issue they're having.

From what I've seen it happens on my G10 and ST30 for about a frame or two, and just that, no other fluctuations.

Thanks. My information must be out of date for the newer devices that are getting Netflix's best software.

I'm always reading here and there about the 100 hours.
I didn't care about this 100 hours. I enjoyed my Panasonic STW50 right from the beginning.

If you ask me, this 100 hours are are just waste of time. You loose 100 hours of joy with your new TV

What's really interesting is the 3d settings are still there.

Hopefully the rumors about Netflix adding 3d support sometime are true.

it only really matters IMO if you play video games with static images or a lot of movies with the letterbox.

Based on keeping the TV for 4 years, 4 days and 4hrs is 0.3% of the lifetime of your TV. Id say its completely worth doing to 100hrs of slides to get the better picture for the 99.7% of the time i plan to keep it for.

I agree with your math, but D-Nice doesn't claim what you are claiming for running slides for 100 hours unless you follow all of his instruction exactly. It also has to be one of the displays that he has posted settings and instructions for.

I calibrated my tv this evening with my g/f using the Disney WoW disc, and we are very happy with the TV.

Comparing the 60ST50 vs the Sharp 60LE835U that I returned last month I will say the Panasonic is better.

The two things that stand out are skin tones and dark scenes. The Panasonic had better skin tones where they looked more realistic. The dark scene that I used as a test was Game of Thrones S01 E08 where Stark is in a dark room. This scene is where the Sharp performed it's worse and also had clouding. The Panasonic handled it beautifully. The Gamma Adjustment at 2.2 was much better than the 2.6 during this scene IMO.

The only negative so far, I did hear a slight buzz during the calibrating during one of the tests from 9-11 feet away in a white scene (contrast or sharp calibration), but not any of the other times when watching tv/blu-ray, even when changing discs in my PS3 right next to the tv.

Next step, find a new TV stand.

The only assertion he presented was the observation that larger screens tend to betray poor quality sources-- which I think we would all agree with.

Apparently not everyone learned how to distinguish between statements of fact & statements of opinion in school... this guy literally requested that he use "in my opinion" disclaimers lol.

I set aspect to Zoom 2 to prevent burn in of the program logos. I never play more than one hour video games. The tv is displaying every 30min the play time this is nice

And finally I'm not going to calibrate my tv so I don't need this slides.

Hello guys! Will this be the best Panasonic this year or will another model out do it. And also looking at the E7000 sammy. Can someone decide what set to get so I can go grab one today.
Thanks

No. See the GT and VT series.

Some people with experience think the ST50 series is the best for the money. That doesn't mean it's the absolute best. A buyer has to figure out for him/her self if any of the extra features are worth the extra money.

Some calibrators think that the ST50 models can be calibrated to be close enough to the calibrated picture quality of the GT/VT models that it would be hard for most people to tell the difference without having the calibrated displays side by side in their home.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a 65" st50 but read a troubling review on amazon today

Quote:

As of the latest automatic firmware update, Panasonic has taken to displaying ads OVER other video sources. For example, the television will display an ad for Panasonic subscription services over your HDMI DVD input. This is incredibly invasive and disappointing. I didn't pay this much for a television just to have Panasonic decide to later "update" the unit with ads. I've gotten used to ads on the menu screens, but to intrude over my selected programming is unacceptable.

Even worse, because Panasonic remotely turned on these ads after the fact, many purchasers are already outside the Amazon return window and are stuck with a now degraded viewing experience.

Can anyone comment onthe validity of this? It would be an absolute deal breaker for me.

Also curious if the vesa mounting pattern has changed from the 2011 models? Panasonic doesnt seem to list them on their website.

Thanks!

It sounds like that guy accidentally put his TV in "Store Mode" instead of "Home Mode" when he set it up. It could also be that he has Viera Connect Banners enabled. Whatever it is, it can be turned off. There have been a few other new owners who complained about this, then turned it off in the Settings menus (i think the setting was called Banners On/Off).

Go back to the first post in this thread - i've linked the Quick Start Guide which has detailed schematics and the vesa bolt pattern info.

would also like to know what the scoop is on this.

I don't have ads like that, but I do see an ad at the top right of Viera Central (takes place of the location of an app). I also think perhaps store mode is enabled, but who knows... All I can tell you is mine doesn't do that right now and I have the newest firmware.
I'd also like to hear something more on this, but as Randy pointed out above, it sounds to me like he might have "banner" enabled in the settings. I'm not sure what effect that has anyways, but I do not believe that Panasonic would force all their users to be subjected to random ads served up over their HDMI viewing. There's just no way they would do that. It would spell certain doom for their entire line of televisions if they did that.

There must be something that review isn't telling us.
The AVS servers would all be crashing from overload if Panasonic did what was posted at Amazon. It's clearly a setting problem, and the poster didn't bother checking with Panasonic before blowing his cork.

The customer forums maintained by dealers like Amazon can give a false impression because there is little on no dialog. Mistakes in posts just sit there being mistaken.

By the way, why do you think adding Internet capability to your TV is such a hot item? There will be services that may interest you, but there will be advertisements included.

Could any owner post a picture of ST50 while showing a movie with black bars in a completely dark room? I want to see how grey bezel mix with black bars. I would really appreciate it.

See a "Viera TV" banner - or some such - when the panel first comes on, but that isn't a bother.
Nor have we seen anything else that in terms of Ads that have struck us as being intrusive.

Hmm it's difficult coz the camera will show the black bars blacker than they are coz of the brighter images of the movie.

I can tell you. When displaying very dark content you will see the bars glowing a little.

But the black bars are definitely visibly better than on my Samsung B650 LCD with 0,03 cd/m2 black level measured on HDTVTest.co.uk

Thanks much Sammy You've got both Sammy and Pana glasses, right? Did you find a chance to watch Hugo with your TV? If you did, can you tell which one expose crosstalk more?

Is the only difference between the 65st50 and 60st50 the screen size?

The reason I'm asking is the 65" is around $2500 online while the 60 is around $1700. Seems like a pretty big premium for the extra 5". I could get a 60 and with the money I save, it could get me halfway to what I expect the 65" will cost in about a year.
