Pulled the trigger on a 65ST50 last Sunday night, arrived from Amazon on Thursday (a day late for which Amazon very nicely compensated us - got to love Amazon!). It's great to finally have ordered a new TV, I've been considering a replacement for months, was going to go for an ST30, maybe a Sammy, but when I saw the recent price drop on the ST50, it was too good to refuse.

What an awesome TV, well, it's huge and thin, I can't speak to the picture quality really since I have not yet put on a single video. All i did was adjust the settings per D-Nice's instructions and start the slide show. It's been running since late Friday night, will finish on Wednesday. I'm glad I'm busy and haven't had time to mount it otherwise I would definitely not have been able to resist watching some content.

As per usual, Amazon is amazing, ordered Sunday, delivered Thursday (almost Wednesday), at no charge for shipping. Insane. 3 years ago when I ordered a 63" Sammy Plasma from Amazon it took over 3 weeks to arrive. The TV came in perfect condition, a close inspection showed no scratches, dings and the panel seems to be artifact free which is another great thing about running them, it should hopefully highlight any issues with the display.

Can't wait to check out LOTR, Avatar, Dark Knight etc. on blu ray on this baby.

When I get close it appears that there are still black pixels. Is this just a border or should the image go all the way to the bezel? I have adjusted the format and used different inputs but I cannot get those pixels to illuminate. Please help...

I have the same border of pixels.

But something has me worried, you mentioned deactivating the pixel orbiter, D-Nice's instructions didn't mention that. I just went and turned it off, just in case, but the slides have been running for days now. Would the pixel orbiter have much impact with a static, uniform image like those in D-nice's slides?

No.

Thanks.

I had this kind of graininess on my older Samsung but should it be present on this newer Panasonic? Is it just something that all big screens have? It's hard for me to except it because I have a 27" 1440p Crossover monitor and when I run the slides on it there is absolutely no grain or noise even when you put your face 2 inches from the screen. lol

What you describe is the typical dithering effect on Panasonic plasmas.
Thats normal and only visible up very close on the full screen slides, so nothing to worry about.
Other technologies like LCD/LED sets don't have that dithering though.

If you Google: "The Official How to Check the Hours Used on Your Plasma" the first result should be a thread over at **************... I would post a direct link, but I have read at other places on this forum that linking to that site is against the rules... I could be wrong on that rule though.

So is there a general consensus on whether we should have the pixel orbiter on or off? I just got the 55", ran the slides for 100 hours and put in D-nice's settings. I think I left it on for now. Are there any negative ramifications to leavin it on?

What gives?

I may be answering late, but I'm going to assume you have an older version of the disc (DVD rather than BlueRay). The 'blooming' they talk about applies to CRT-based sets. It should be explained that this setting does not apply to flat screen sets. I think.rolleyes.gif

I need some advice here. I have a ST50. I need a soundbar, or surround system for Blu ray movies and Cable TV. I dont need music quality- just a nice upgrade from the TV speakers. Looking for easy hook-up and decent sound quality. around 300.00 to 400.00 range. What is the best for that price range?? Thanks for any ideas.
I received my new P60ST50, which I like. It makes my other TV look bad. I used DNICE's setting which I think did improve the picture setting. The only thing is I feel it a little dark for my tastes. I have been playing with brightness, contrast and color trying to get the right balance. Anyone have the same issues with these settings and/or recommendations for the best way to brighten(make colors pop and retain sharpness)?

Have seen reviews of soundbars on a few sites - try Cnet, Consumer Reports, perhaps Home Theater Mag....

Also: this is not a "ST50-Specific" question - might try posting this under a different thread (must be a Speaker / Surround Sound heading Somewhere - ??), and thus reach a wider audience.

Do you already have a Receiver you can use?
A blu-ray player?

Have you thought about placement? (Available height, width, and depth - and potentially weight limitations if your tv is pushing the rating for your stand.)

FWIW, would vote for "audio quality" over "Features" - particularly when shopping at a given price point. (Obvious Example: a GOOD 5.1 system will trump a CHEAP 7.1 system...)

Best of luck...

You can always piece together your system slowly. Start with an AVReceiver and two speakers (towers or bookshelves) and go from there. It's important to timber match your front 3, or you can always go with a phantom center (two mains simulate a center, and any decent set of speakers will do a good job of it). Surrounds aren't nearly as important IMO.
Polk, Infinity, Klipsch and Energy all make good entry level budget speakers. For entry level receivers, I prefer Denon or Onkyo.

If you want to go the package route, there's a Denon receiver / Boston Acoustics package for around $450 that will sound better than any HTIB. Or if you can spend a bit more, the Martin Logan MLT-2 set or Energy Take Classic systems are good little packages; you'll need to buy a receiver though and these speaker packages sell for just under $400 themselves.

Additions worth mentioning:
THX modes (Cinema, Brightroom, 3D)
Dual-core processor
1 extra HDMI/USB port
Aesthetics

Both sets will perform the same after calibrated but the THX modes gives you a little better out-of-the-box performance and good picture modes for day/night and 3D. Black levels, contrast, screen filter, brightness etc., are all the same (color accuracy too after calibration).

Is the dual core processor a big difference? Minor? Can you lead me to some good calibration settings? I keep reading about a dnice? Do i calibrate right away?

Can sommeone also school me on running slides/dvd's? (first plasma) which one is better? Do i keep the tv on during running of slides? Do i ease up as hours rack up?

Thanks for any help. Leaning on the 55 st over 50 gt
post #3858 of 9472
The dual-core processor just makes the apps/menus etc., faster. It might help with video playback from the SD/USB slot.

D-Nice's settings can be found at high def junkies dot com. You must signup to see the section. The instructions are on the first post of D-Nice's thread.

Dnice will be releasing settings for the 60 and 65 inch ST's soon. He has said that a gamma setting of 2.4 will be used in those new settings.

An individual call.

Personally, there are other factors that would enter into the equation:
Does the $100 difference take into account Shipping & Taxes?

Do you have a local Paul's outlet, and plan to pick the set up yourself? "Instant Gratification," but opens up other questions, such as "What happens if YOU break the panel, either in transportation, or carrying it / setting it up. Unlikely perhaps, but certainly not unheard of. (Of course, the larger the panel, the greater the hassle of handling it yourself.)

How does Paul's Return Policy compare to Amazon's?

FWIW, my brother purchased a set from a local Paul's, & had them deliver it, and was pleased with the experience.

We've ordered a couple of panels from Amazon, and were very pleased with their "White Glove" delivery & set up - although other people have reported a less-than-satisfactory experience with the process. (A lot seems to depend upon the local delivery service!)
Sad to say, we ALSO were extremely pleased with Amazon's return policy & procedures, as we've had to send a couple of sets back to them....

Our last panel came from Costco: we picked it up (and at 60" that was something of a hassle) - but liked the price, the 90-day return policy, and the included 2-year warranty. Unfortunately, Costco has a limited selection of sets - and a VERY limited selection of plasma panels...

Good luck!

Nope no Pauls around me. Thats the thing, Amazon's return policy is probably better. If I read correctly Pauls might have restock fees and whatnot. But not only is their shipping free but also no tax. So a $200 dollar difference. I'm gonna try to see if any local stores with the set will match Pauls price, although they probably wont cause its online

Try different gamma setting under the Pro settings section.
D-Nice recommends gamma at 2.6 (but thats for 50" and 55") for 60ST50 he reported it should be 2.4, but you can try a lower setting like 2.2 and see which you prefer.
A lower gamma setting lightens the overall picture.
On my 50ST50 I find the gamma 2.6 is good for bright outdoor scenes like golf and baseball, but for dark scenes on some TV shows and movies 2.4 or 2.2 seems better.

Check out the Onkyo Ht-s3500 and the Onkyo Ht-s5500 on amazon.com!!! They're really good for HTIB!! Yamaha makes some good HTIB systems too my brother has one in a fairly large room and it sounds pretty damn impressive for the price point!!

Gamma affects mid tone brightness. Setting the 50/55 to 2.6 puts the gamma around 2.2. Setting my 60" to 2.6 puts the gamma around 2.34.
There's not really a standard for gamma, but generally you want to be in the 2.2 - 2.5 range. I personally prefer ~2.35 in a dark room. 2.2 is better for a moderate - brightly-lit room IMO.
Changing the gamma also seems to affect where Brightness needs to be.

I'm pretty sure amazon.com will price match on tv's. I'm almost 100% positive, I was on the phone with them earlier about something non related and I'm pretty sure the Customer Service lady told me the only thing they price match on was tv's!!!!

In the $400 price range you could even get this, it comes with a one year Onkyo warranty. It's reconditioned but it's really nice!!!

This might be a stupid question. Just got the St50 yesterday. And I can't get the custom settings to save. When I change them, I press save to default. When I turn the tv off , turn it back on it reverts back to the factory defaults. I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing. The tv is great by the way I'd anyone is one the fence. I'm coming from LCD so it will take a while for my eyes to get used to it. But the picture quality is great.

Actually there is a standard for gamma, 2.4, but I think that is only if you are watching in a pitch black environment.
