Maybe I do not understand what you are asking, or maybe you have a non-U.S. set (based on you saying "american black friday"). But, the little red light is only lit when the TV is on, not off.

I have been using the Sony HT-CT150. You can probably get it for a decent price (under $250) if it's still around and the sound is very good. Have been surprised at how nice the surround effects can be. Course it depends on how big and the shape the room is. What's also nice is that you can use it as a switcher. I have my cable box, Roku and blu-ray player plugged into it an then into my 55ST50 which frees up the other HDMI inputs just in case you need them for something else. Overall a nice piece of equipment for a good price that has been problem free.

I'm assuming the flashlight method of checking for cracks while the TV is off is because that's when they would be most visible right? Would there be any negative effects from shining a led light on the TV while it was on and playing something?

Awesome thanks, I always like to know what these things mean, even though in the long run it's probably not gonna help me calibrate haha.

ok so I've tried Dnice, Cnet, and Gregorian's settings from Amazon. Cnet's calibration settings at night impressed me the most with mind blowing picture quality. (Coming from a former Samsung LCD owner)
However, during the day, with all my shades open, it feels washed out. Its not as vibrant or crisp.

Does anyone have daytime calibration settings?
Is it just any of the following settings with the calibration at 100?
(I dont want to risk burn-in // image retention)

Also I was wondering what the best sound settings are?
Is surround mode better than standard on the tv's speakers?

p.s. dont tell me i should have gotten an lcd. because I already had. i gotta make do with what i got right now. I chose a plasma because I wanted something with more "definition" so to speak. I certainly see that plasma reproduce colors much more naturally and there is relatively no input lag. However, as stated from previous posts such as the "elephant in the room" my fios menus and info section while changing channels is definitely a little more faded than lcds at the benefit of better colors and "definition".

The lower light output in 3D mode and glasses impact mean that the eye's response to the colors is different (layman's terms, below a certain APL/brightness, we need to goose up the color in order for it to look "correct" and normal).
A quick way to summarize the difference in settings:
he pulled sharpness up from 0 to 10.
he adjusted the COLOR control.
he increased contrast to 100 (since contrast is effectively white brightness and overall light output and the loss of some highlight detail is acceptable in order to get closer to the right brightness and color when in 3D mode).
Below are the official settings. Use these as a comparision for the 2D settings I posted, rather than as an absolute recommendation, since all panels differ.
Picture Mode Custom 3D
Contrast +100
Brightness +58
Color +56
Tint 0
Shaprness 10
Color Temp Cool1
CATS Off
Video NR Off
Color Space Normal
WB High R 0
WB High G 0
WB High B 0
WBLowR 0
WBLowG 0
WBLowB 0
Black Extension 0
Gamma Adjustment 2.4
Panel Brightmess Mid
Contour Emphasis Off
AGC O
HD Size Size 2
Mosquito NR Off
Motion Smoother Off
Black Level Light
fyi he was suprised we didn't need to increase the panel brightness in order to get decent light output but was glad that was the case

Much appreciated

Correct and no negative effects.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I am thinking about purchasing the 55" version of this tv. I need to know how big the box is to see if it will fit in my car or if I need to borrow a friends truck.

Thank you sir. I was paranoid that shining a light up close like that with the panel on would affect the pixels somehow!

Forgive me if this has been covered, but when you are watching something in an aspect ratio OTHER than 16:9 and you get the bars on the sides or top and bottom around the image, are those bars BLACK or GRAY? (At one point, Panasonic was putting out the 50ST50 units with GRAY bars, but maybe the units being sold in the last few months use BLACK bars now.)
Thanks!

Thank you. At least that gives me an idea of what the box will be.

So I have been reading tons of reviews on numerous websites and they all seem to agree that the picture quality is superb. I have seen it in person and tend to agree, however, I have been an LCD owner for the last 10 years and have some reservations. Maybe you guys can help calm my fears. Again, I apologize if these questions have already been answered, but there are too many pages to read through.

1. I am extremely paranoid of potential burn in problems. I play games, watch blurays and my kids watch tv...most of which have the letterbox black sections and a "Nick" logo. I also watch a lot of sports. Should I be concerned?

2. I want to do the 100 hour break in with the slides but I cant imagine having a TV just sit there for over 4 days without getting real use. Like a kid not bring able to play with a new toy right in front of them. Haha. Are the slides necessary? I will most likely do them but I am so used to opening the box, setting it up, and watching.
This will be new for me.

3. The TV looked a little dark in the store in comparison to the samsung es7100 displayed right next to it. Do plasmas lose brightness over time or is that just a standard plasma display?

4. Since LEDs don't have the burn in issues like plasmass, I have been looking into the Sony 55hx850 as well. It is about $600 more than the Panny, but thought the extra money might be justified not worrying about burn in. How does the Sony compare to the 55st50 overall?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to be sure before making this large purchase.

I tried these settings last night playing ACIII in 3D for a couple of hours. I switched between these settings and DNice's. I do like your settings because they are brighter. I noticed your calibration was done for Panny Glasses. I wonder how much difference there is to the Samsung glasses model SSG-4100GB. I wouldn't think that much, but I could be wrong. I am waiting on the price to drop on the Panny glasses.

All that you can really do is increase the contrast (or close the shades).

Unfortunately, I don't own a proper video camera. I've tried using my Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone to do a video recording and the microphone didn't pick up the buzzing my panel was giving off with white slides running.

Not sure what good recording it will do really. It is very real. Likely noticeable in many other electronics with capacitor defect problems or who knows the exact cause. It's a common buzzing / feedback type of noise. I'd say similar to the sound I notice coming from the power supply of the PC I built when I run my dish washer, only louder. Or the coil whine sound I noticed when I first got my EVGA GTX 680 video card.

Regardless of how it sounds, annoying is annoying when it comes to constant electronic noise. Like many I strive for silent technology experiences, that's why I bit the bullet and changed my computer case from a full tower, metal monster to a mid tower with sound absorbing padding and low RPM fans, heh.

Not really. "Burn-in" and "image retention" are two different things. IR can happen to anyone & is not permanent. Burn-in is nigh impossible in normal, home viewing conditions.

LED are generally considered to be brighter (too bright) by their very nature. Also, any store is going to have them set to accentuate a TV's brightness, thus exacerbating the LED's brightness.

I cannot speak to the quality of that Sony specifically. The Panny is one fine TV, though.

Buzzing aside.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing "rainbow effects" with whites? I'm not sure if this is perhaps a defect with the panels light filter. Or something with my own visual impairment that is causing this phenomenon. Trouble is I haven't been able to notice it when I look at other plasma panels in stores.

Update: Seems that if you see rainbows on plasma TVs you're "special". The link below is full of other "special" people and their experiences with plainbows. Hope it helps others.

I know... I searched that forum, but didn't find much info in regards to sound bars and this particular tv. I just thought I'd see if anyone on this forum had a preference or suggestion for a good match with this panny tv.

question, should I be using size1 or size2? I notice that when I use size2 it does not fill in the whole tv pixel? I know this because when I press the menu button the overlay extend further than the tv image.

Wouldn't that cause problem to the tv if those pixel aren't being used or is always dark?

But if I use size1 then the images are cut off. I don't think i ever had this problem with my kuro.

Also when I stand right up to the TV the pixel looks grainy and space out compare to my kuro, I'm also guessing that is normal?

just to hear the variances in buzzing. a certain level is considered normal, where as a certain level is not. Thus, helping people determine whether they have a defect v normal. if normal they can return and not get another plasma...
Buzzing is also dependent on the surface and distance that the back of television is reflecting off of. Some people have reported success from lining the surface with acoustic foams.
